Never Backup to iTunes/iCloud - What's My Alternative?

So we are an apple family (iPads and iPhones) but I rarely backup/sync our devices to iTunes, it seems I only plug into my desktop computer when we have a near miss with one of our devices getting lost or broken and then I think oh god I better back up cause we are going to loose everything off the phone. Am I living under a rock and I probably am, but is this still the thing to do ? None of us use iCloud either….
Is there an easier way (as we don't particularly want to use iCloud as I am sure we would have to pay $$ for excess space) than having to make time to plug into a computer and back up ?

I personally wouldn’t be without iCloud. Everything is backed up and I don’t even have to think about it. Depends how important the data on your devices is and how much additional time you want to waste finding and implementing other solutions. I personally can’t be bothered.

    • Me too - iCloud has been a godsend for me. I don't have to buy high-capacity phones because my almost 20,000 photos from many years ago until now live in the cloud, and I don't have to think about it - everything is done automatically.

If those photos mean that much to you, you might want to have a backup copy on a hard drive at home. ie, you're not relying solely on apple.

It might be too late now, but it might aslo be good to go through regularly and delete the obvious rubbish photos so that the collection doesn't grow to the point where there's just too many pictures to sort through if you're looking for something. Or for whatever reason you need to move it all off iCloud.

  • how can people get additional iCloud storage for free?

    • $5 iTunes voucher every month/week from AIA vitality

      • Assuming you actually meet their goals every week …

        • Get a step-faker from Ali express and it’ll pay itself off in 2 weeks ;)

If it's mainly photos/videos you want backed up; grab yourself a Office365 Home subscription (SaveOnIt usually have it cheap).

This gives you 5 licenses to use Office365, that can be shared with 4 others… Each person who has a licensed of office365 Home also gets a 1TB onedrive.

Using the OneDrive app on your phone, you can automatically sync all photos/videos to your OneDrive.

Up to 5TB OneDrive space for just the price of the Office365 Home subscription, can't beat that.

    Google Photos works on iOS

    • Thankyou for this tip - exactly what I just went and did.

      • Note that this is not original quality unless you pay for it. Or have a pixel phone

  • You're already an Apple family. It makes absolutely no sense at all not to make use of the service that Apple provide. Everything else will be a far less convenient way to do things.

Just get yourself an iCloud Family sharing plan and you can all share content (or choose not to) and extra storage. This will solve all your data issues for your whole family in the simplest way.

As far as backups go, I'd highly recommend utilising iCloud services like iCloud Photo Library and of course all the usual stuff like Contacts, Messages, Email, Keychain, Notes, etc. It really is one of the reasons to choose Apple in the first place.

People talk about the freedom to do what they like with their data on Android/PC but it's very rare someone actually comes up with a genuine scenario (one that doesn't involve piracy for example) of something that can't be done on the Apple ecosystem. However if you want convenience, coherence, ease of use, respect for your privacy and security then Apple is by far your best choice. Sure you can hobble together all sorts of services from Microsoft and Google and third parties, but it will never end up being as simple and user friendly as going with the Apple services.

  • My pic get backed up on my NAS automatically
Only the Apps are iCloud sync
I don’t back up chats either and you can easily stay within the limit

  • I ended up backing up all of our pictures to Google Photos - what a great app. I feel at ease now. There is nothing else that I really care about loosing on our devices now.
