  • Xiaomi / Roborock are the way to go. I had a Samsung VR7000 too, it did a poor job. The xiaomi vacuums well, has a good size dustbin, has an excellent app, and its easy to set boundaries both in the app and using magnetic strip tape. I would describe it as the airpods of robot vacuum cleaners. The first generation is fine, that's what I have, and I'm really happy with it. We use it on hardwood, and rugs.

I agree with you 90% but please don’t compare it with AirPods haha

      • Yeah, I read an article on airpods two years out. Less than half the battery life and the guy wants to buy another pair…

Another vote for Xiaomi, ours has been amazing!
However, you need to have the house tidy otherwise it can get stuck trying to vacuum up toys and clothes.
Don't bother with the mopping function of the Second Gen, the killer feature for Gen 2 is that it saves maps so it's easier to zone clean a room, otherwise Gen 1 is comparable.

    • First gen has the last clean saved and lets you do zoned cleanup off of that.

      • Which is great unless the last clean was a zoned clean.

We have the V2, and bought my Mum a V1 soon after we got ours… The unsaved map file annoys me every time I use hers, she tends to walk it around the house and spot clean, or shut it in a room to do a full room clean which doesn't help!

  • Xiaomi roborock s50 is great. But like scubacoles says might need cleanup larger bits of stuff (eg kids craft ribbons/pipe cleaners) as it can get stuck in the spinning parts.

Search ozbargain for expired deals and should get idea on good price range. Low-mid $400s?
Ebay with % off sales when 2 stores are competing for sales, is when get best prices.

  • Thank you Oz fam

Many thanks for the recommendations :)

  • Should I get the extended warranty from Roborock or ebay?? is that worth it??

    • Extended Warranties are money in the bank for the retailer.
I don't believe that they are worth it.

Some people swear by them, but I'd hazard the guess that the money spent on Extended Warranties over the years by those people far exceeds the replacement cost of the one Lemon item they might have had need to claim on.

Depends on your ability to cough up for a replacement should you get a Lemon maybe?

  • Heard that the Xioami is excellent… especially when price is considered.
I have an older Roomba 630… got it on sale a few years ago… still going strong.
It doesn't have any of the automation/apps/etc… but you'll find that you might have to shift dining room chairs back… pick a few things up off the floor*, etc anyway. So, the automation/app value is questionable.
It's easy enough to just push the "Clean" button with your foot as you head out the door.

*: especially if you have kids!

  • Awesome! now I am waiting for a awesome deal…

  • Joining for some guidance. I have heard good things about Xiaomi, but not sure of the idea of having magnetic strip running across the floor as i feel it may be a little bit of an eye sore. Anyone here who uses the magnet strip for boundary settings?

I currently have a Roomba 980 which i got from a myer sale for 950bucks. It has been very reliable for the past 2 years. According to the app, it has done 532 hours of cleaning and covered 21,000m2 of area for me. Does the job very well and i almost never had to vacuum our living area floor manually.

It uses virtual wall (mini beacon) which i stuck to the side of a wall to create boundary, so it does not have the issue of having to run a strip along the floor, while being sort of hidden.

My only issue with this gadget is the price. I have replaced a few bits on the roomba such as the brush etc so far. But eventually it will break and i want something more affordable to replace it.

Note that robotic vacuum are not for everyone. It does require a routine cleanup (depending on how dirty your floor gets), otherwise it just get stuck and does not work. For me i had to give it a clean every 2-3 weeks we keep our floor relatively clean.

    • You can run the Xiaomi once to map out the rooms, then future times you can click and drag multiple squares around to show it where you want cleaned.

      • I was told by my mate that the zoning using software has to be done manually each time the robot sets off. Is this still true?

I have my machine scheduled to run each day and i will hate to have to go on to the app to set the zones everyday.

        Cheers!

        • Tbh I haven’t tried scheduled zoning. I don’t have any areas I need avoided.
Hopefully someone else can chime in.

        • You can set virtual walls and no-go zones in the app for the V2 model - although it makes very clear that no guarantees can be made that the vacuum will abide by them.
I've never tried these features, so can't comment, but I'm guessing that WiFi Signal Strength might play an important role in how well it can follow such rules.
Ours shows remarkable precision in identifying its location (note that we have 2 Access Points in the house, but even then it sometimes complains about poor signal strength), it can even work out its location if you physically pick it up and move it to a room!

For Zoned Cleanups, it saves the last zone used and TBH we rarely use zoned cleanup outside of the kitchen cause it needs more frequent cleans than other rooms and generally doesn't require a pre-tidy up.
In the event that we don't want a full clean done for other rooms of the house, it's easier to close doors (to messy rooms) before you head out.

Having said that, I'd like to see a future firmware upgrade that did allow you to save zones and name them!

I've linked our Xiaomi Account up to Google Assistant so I can voice command a clean. Our kids named the vacuum "Alfie", so I can now say, "OK Google, Start Alfie" (usually from the car when I've forgotten to manually start it before heading out the door) and Google Assistant replies "OK, Starting the Alfie"
It'd be fantastic to voice command a zoned clean "OK Google, start Alfie in Bedrooms zone", maybe even multiple zones.

  • Thanks unco !

Folks can anybody shed some light on magnetic tape and the zoning…
As I have hardworrd floors ijn both bedrooms and kitchen and living. Do I still have to put the magnetic tape around the glass door? or it will map?

    • +1

The robot will bump into the glass door or mirror and map it as a boundary.

    • V2 allows you to save a map with Virtual Walls and No-Go Zones.

We have Floating Floors through the living areas (Rug in the Lounge) and carpet in Bedrooms, it happily roams the house and V2 (unsure about V1) has a carpet sensing feature that works most of the time to increase suction on carpeted areas.

Unless you're planning to use the "mopping" function (it just drags a damp cloth behind the vacuum, it's really not worth it in my opinion) or have a really long stranded rug, I can't really imagine why you'd need to differentiate between hard and carpeted areas.

      • Have mainly tiled floors, with medium pile carpet. But carpet is quite dark, and im reading that a lot of robot vacuums struggle with dark colours. Do you happen to know how the bots goes in that regard?

    • the strip is only for entries to area you don't want the robot to go through. Say for example you have a room you don't want the robot to go into, but couldn't be bothered to keep the door closed every day, you can run the magnetic strip across the room door. The robot will detect the strip and avoid going into the room.

I find this strip method not very pretty..
