Dental Work in Thailand (Bangkok)

Hi chums,

I'm travelling to Thailand in May to have some dental work done (3x impacted, 1x erupted wisdom teeth extraction).

I've got some quotes from some of the major international dentists. Just wanted to see if anyone has had experience with getting dental work done at any of these, and more specifically, if they added on any extra charges after the initial quotes? Would be great to hear if anyone has specifically had wisdom teeth extracted here?

The quotes I've received are as follows:

Thantakit International Dental Center: 26100 THB ($1162 AUD)
Bangkok Smile Dental Clinic: 23000 THB ($920 AUD)
Bangkok International Dental Center: 28900-32900 THB ($1287-$1465 AUD)

Thanks a bunch!

Probably best to talk to your local dentist regarding their opinion plus you will need them to do the follow ups.

    • I did this first, they quoted $3900 + a few hundred in appointment fees. got the xrays and forwarded to the Thailand clinics to allow accurate quotes.

    • Will definitely get this! thanks!

OP, impacted wisdom teeth require general anesthetic. You would be an absolute moron to travel to Thailand to undergo general anesthetic. There is a mortality rate associated with anesthesia here, in a country like Thailand the risks are considerably worse.

    • Hi mate, agree with you here, at these clinics it would be done under sedation + local anaesthetic rather than general.

      • You would also be nuts getting impacted wisdom teeth removed under local.

        • +1

I did for mine and it and it turned out fine.

        • +1

I did it and it was fine

        • +2

You don't need GA for impacted wisdom teeth.
Yes it can be a bit confronting hearing the bone crunching or the vibration as they cut open your jaw to release the tooth, but there is no pain.
GA is a risk in every hospital in every case.
My father died under GA when he went in for a minor hernia repair.

          • @[Deactivated]: Absolutely, and far more dangerous in a place like Thailand.

        • +1

I had my 4 done under a local. Was fine. After the event was the painful part.

          • @brad1-8tsi: How long recovery time? i'll be pissed if my jaws too swollen to eat any pad thai while i'm there

            • +2

@Balmaino: you won't like eating anything for a week

            • +1

@Balmaino: Get it done the day before you leave!

            • +1

@Balmaino: I can't remember - It was 1982. I think I had 2 days off work plus a weekend and lots of paracetamol.

I'm sure things have improved since then.

        • +1

You would be a (profanity) if you 'HAD' to get it done under general!

    • +5

Complete BS. There is no increased risk in these hospitals compared to Australia. 90% of there patients are international visitors or rich Thais

      • I'd still prefer to avoid general, if only because it'll be difficult to navigate a foreign city for the following days while "under the influence"

      • -2

Lol. It’s absolute bullshit like this that allows this industry to survive. Australia has amongst the best health care in the world. Use it.

        https://www.mja.com.au/journal/2014/201/10/medical-tourism-r…

The fact is, it’s just not worth risking your life for a couple of grand.

        • Have you, or anyone you know, had treatment done at one of these facilities or are you just repeating the "A Current Affair" stories you've watched on TV about Thailand?

          • -2

@Balmaino: No, I’m quoting from the Medical Journal of Australia, a respected and peer reviewed publication. There’s even a link; all you have to do is click on it and read. But let’s not the facts get in the way of what you want to be true.

            • @[Deactivated]: I did read it- let me sum it up: "not enough evidence, we don't know"- have you read it?

              • @Balmaino: That’s not the summary at all.

                • @[Deactivated]: "The main problem with medical tourism is that it currently has no robust empirical evidence base.1,2,10 Hence, we do not know if medical tourism will be a future boon or bane for Australia's consumers and health care system. Care and caution are needed, because the potential negative consequences for individuals and the community remain profound."

Hi there, we are in Thailand at the moment, visiting Thantakit for the third time, this time to finalise implants and crowns. Charges were exactly as listed in previous appointments and I have no reason to think this will be different today. Husband had root canal work the first time, and implants inserted the second time, so it was similar to the work for wisdom teeth in that it required surgery in the chair. Both sessions required us to return in ten days after the initial procedure. All medications were included eg post operative pain killers, antiseptics etc. I highly recommend the clinic, their service ( pick up and return to hotel ) , and treatments, as well as being far far cheaper than our local dentist in Melbourne.

    • Thanks ms_caz! I was leaning towards Thantakit as they seem to have the most positive feedback and least negative

I've mentioned this before but it gets lost in the noise…

I considered doing the same thing during one of my holidays years ago before I found out I could get the same price for 4 teeth in the Sydney CBD: https://www.wisdomteethremovalsydney.com.au/

Note that I only had 1 simple extraction done and I pre-did the X-ray via my GP because life has taught me you can never trust a dentist's pricing and I knew they would charge the upper end of the price "range" as well.

When you consider the lost work, lost holiday time, flights, accommodation and insurance costs it's a no brainer for a Sydney-sider. Of course when the savings are $10,000 the equation is different.

    • -1

Of course, it takes no brain to undertake this kind of stupidity.

    • +1

Wow, that seems like a really great alternative. I have had some minor dental work done in Thailand and Bali (filling, fix cracked tooth, etc.) and was very happy with the standard of dentist and facilities and wouldn't hesitate to get more complex work done but if you can do it locally for the same price it makes a lot more sense than having this cut into your holiday time.

    • +2

Can the guys who downvoted my comment at least provide an explanation. Maybe there's a catch to the Sydney dentist? You can ask someone on OzBargain to translate if English is a problem. If you're just too embarrassed to write something with your usual name just create a disposable account. Maybe the mods will allow it (a lot of people are too shy or not confident enough to write in the forums, so I assume this is common).

      • Not sure why you got downvoted! wouldve definitely considered this if I hadn't already booked the flights to Thailand.

I've had work done with Bangkok Smile and happily recommend them.

The dentist and orthodontist were both Australian Educated and they had excellent equipment.

    • -7

So an Australian trained orthodontist has an opportunity to put away $800k a year in private practice, but instead decides he’d be better off travelling to live in a developing country, earning probably a quarter of the wage if he’s lucky, and that doesn’t ring alarm bells? I’d be very carefully looking at his associations and credentials.

        Not even close…

Thai nationals come to Australia and train under a student visa with the intention of returning home to work in their own country - Think outside the box mate.

      Hi Singlemalt,
What kind of procedure was done?
Any "added on suprises" at the end?
      Thanks!

I've been going to Bangkok Smile since 2011 and I've had nothing but wonderful experiences. I've received impeccable service at a fraction of the cost over a long period of time and I'll never go to an over priced Australian dentist again.

The equipment is also much better than here and the dentist I last saw was educated in Scotland. Don't get put off by the naysayers.

    • awesome thanks

    • +1

Similar experiences here. I lived and worked Thailand for 4 years and have subsequently returned for dental work on multiple occasions with Bangkok Smile. Will be doing the same with any future requirements.

  • +2

I had a root canal and 2 crowns fitted from Bangkok smile, it was will worth it, we made a holiday out of the trip and smile has offices in other locations not just Bangkok so I also got to move around for my dental holiday. The dentist I saw was trained in the United States. The offices were immaculate and the quotes did not change after the visits.

    • awesome thank you

  • OP, how much would it cost to get these done in Australia?

I am going to cop a $6000 bill for 2 implants shortly in Brisbane. The service is good and I presume the dental work is great too. Just the wallet is really hurting.

    • +1

i was quoted $3900 plus some extra consulting fees to have it done locally (Vic)

Mosey over to www.thaivisa.com & search for dental.

Advice from another "local" - stick to the dental threads on Thai Visa.

Wander into some of the other threads, and you will want to go and have a good long shower after ingesting the virulent racism you will encounter.

ps I also have my dental work done locally, but not in a major western clinic in Bangkok, for about 30% of the Oz price.

      • +1

Some are a bit nasty, but that's how it is. You would think anti-Thai or anti-Asian people wouldn't pick those areas to live in.

  • I prefer the dentists in Thailand

  • +2

Not quite what you're asking, but I had 2 bridges plus other work done in 2005 @ http://www.bangkokdental.com
Prices have obviously risen since, but at the time I couldn't fault them. The local quotes (Avalon, Sydney) were around $15k. Had the work done for half, including airfares/accommodation and 3 weeks holiday.

The waiting room, back then, was a mix of Canadians, Americans, Aussies and local wealthy Chinese, which was a good sign IMO. No guarantee things would still be the same, but back then the practice was owned by a Harley St dentist.

The bridges finally failed this month, so am heading O/S again to have them replaced, as local quotes where all around $12k.

All booked in for Bangkok Smile. Will post a follow up when i get back (if i remember). thanks everyone!

Hey hope this isnt too late. I had 2 of my lower wisdom tooth removed over the summer holidays in Vietnam. Costed $100 AUD. They did a very good job, definitely recommend. They gave local anaesthesia. Keep in mind wisdom teeth removal is actually minor oral surgery, its literally just pulling out a teeth. Anyways, the place i went to was owned by the government, so it was legit, nothing shady. Let me know if you want more information, all the best!

Dunno whether Bangkok Smile is related to Sea Smile? I had some major work done with Sea Smile at Phuket, and highly recommend. Far more professional than any dentist I've visited in Australia, and that's quite a list.

You need to be wise with ensuring your travel plans work in with your treatment requirements though. eg I got sick the day after treatment. If I had gotten sick earlier, it would have thrown a spanner in the works.
But it's nice to have a holiday and still come out on top financially.

    • Thanks Mick!
Yeah Sea Smile is the Phuket branch of the same clinic. I've got a couple of days leeway in case of delayed flights of anything.
      Cheers

All done fellas! $797, 1.5 hours.

    • +1

      worth the holiday trip??? ;)

      • absolutely! highly recommended

  • I had 2 wisdoms done in bangkok more than a year ago at BIDC - 1 lower impacted and 1 standard extraction. All up, $500 AUD including medication. Got a 10 day holiday out of it, highly recommended. Its a 7 storey hospital like building.

Local dentists can go suck it up….
