Entertainment Book - JB Hi-Fi Discounted Gift Cards

Hi all

Just ordering a new laptop through jb hi fi. Just wondering :

A) if there's any better deal than 5% off jb hi fi gift cards at entertainment book. Credit card fee is 1.25% so essentially your discount is a more reduced 3.75%.

B) is there a maximum number of egift cards from ent book you can redeem in store to pay for my laptop which is en route from another store?

I know entertainment book restrict you to 4 x $250 vouchers per 24 hrs. So i would need about 9 or 10 vouchers (8 x $250,plus another $75 or so in vouchers as laptop is 2089).

Just don't want to get caught with so many vouchers and unable to use them as i wont normally spend at jb hi fi so i only want to use them for this laptop.

C) do i open myself to any warranry or servicing issues given receipt will be all in gift card payments so no direct correspondence to my credit card?? I presume one issue is i will never get a cash refund if there is an issue with the laptop ….

But yeah would appreciate if anyone has bought via entertainment book and used that many vouchers i.e. 10 vouchers or $2k + in value in the recent months?

So far staff say no probs but just triple checking.

have alook here for discounted card sites and costs etc

  • JB online says it'll only accept a maximum of 5 gift cards per transaction.

Suncorp has JB egift cards at 5% off and no credit card fees.
Maximum $500 per JB egift card, maximum $1000 spend per day.

    • Yeap,i know jb online has maximum 5 but i was wondering about in store if there is a limit?

Unfortunately entertainment book only allows $250 cards max….

Suncorp - don't have an account unfortunately.

      • Sorry my comment wasn't helpful.

This post and its comments should answer your question.

        • That's alright. Thanks for the link. I'd just stumbled across that just now and so its relevant. Looks likely it's fine using as many as one wants… the key q now is whether the purchase of gift cards rather than a laptop direct constitutes the acquisition of an asset for tax purposes…given the gift card intermediary.

  • Does JB still offer lay-bys? Could you lay-by it and pay it off with gift cards?

    • I dont know about lay by? Its on clearance and ordered one from another store so ithink to get the clearance price i have to pay it all before 31st anyway….more of depends on max gift cards allowed in person…

  • I can get 5% off JB Gift Cards from Youi and they have $1000 gift cards if that helps..

    • Thanks. But how would i get them?? Do you have the 1.25% credit charge fee like entertainment book? I dont mind $250 vouchers but just want to check if you can use up to 10 in store….

      • Youi have never charged me any credit card fees, sometimes they have specials where I can get 7.5% off for JB gift cards.
I guess I could buy it for you if you give me the cash, but I understand that you may not feel comfortable about this, because it's a lot of money.

I'm probably breaking some OzB code here, but if you're only saving 3-5% it might not be worth the trouble of using gift cards, especially if there's a potential for tax deductibility.

        • That's pretty good. Where do you live?? If eastern stated then it's a no go for me unfortunately as can't do cash :(

Regarding gift cards and deductibility that's an interesting one….. if you buy gift cards and use those as your payment of a laptop are you still determined as purchasing the laptop… since you used your money to acquire it still… I'd be keen to know. I know for interest deductibility and investments you'd fall foul… but in this case your buying an asset to depreciate almost…?

        • My god, an Ozbargainer and a Youi customer now that’s oxymoronic

SaberX there is nothing wrong with buying gift cards from multiple sources. Also the Suncorp app is accessable if you have any Suncorp product, Gio AAMI bank etc. you can open fee free bank account with $1 and buy using non Suncorp credit card. These e-gift cards are instantly available

  • Can combine gift cards online.

Buy gift cards with gift cards to extend them

Looks like you can buy up to $500 gift cards, so can use a max of $2,500 in gift cards online

    • Entertainment cards sell only $250 max. I am also buying in store a laptop shifting from another store… so hence i wasnt sure if any limit applied apart from needing ID.

    • Can you even buy a gift card with one on jb hi fi online?? Case being woolies and coles etc you can't use their egift cards to buy other gift cards now adays.

Yes you can, that's why I said it lol I've done it a few times to merge cards

  • When I bought my phone from JB, I told this to the store rep, "I do not have the gift cards right now but I can get them tomorrow which will give me a discount of 5%. If you can reduce the price by 5%, I'll buy it right now."

    And he agreed.

Could have been my lucky day!

But you could've haggled and paid with discounted gift cards…

  • So I've found that Woolworths employees have access to 'PlusClub' which gives a 7% discount on physical JB Hifi gift cards
