Transferring AmEx Points to FF Program

Hi all,

With the upcoming changes to AMEX, I need some opinions on which program I should move all my points to. I am currently using the AMEX explorer with around 120k points.

I plan on travelling to Paris then over to USA via London in July 2020 with my partner, my mom and my 1 year old daughter.

I currently have 210k points in QFF and 80k points on velocity FF but not sure whether I want to fly on QANTAS as the tax is so high and finding classic rewards can be difficult. My goal is to reach 500-600k points by end of the year so that i could book some business class flights.

Any opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated :)

  • Gluck try to get 3 adults and 1 baby in business with 500k. Each RTW or even Aus to Europe will set you back 250k at least.

A tactic could be to book through Cathay and route through HK to save on taxes?

    • yeah i know i wouldnt be able to get all the flights business. but 1-2 flights on business is better than none.

book through cathay on QFF or through asia miles?

  • Either works. Think you'll get better bang for your buck with asia miles if amex can transfer to asia miles. Just be careful regarding asia miles' expiry dates.

    • Very high taxes/fees copayment with Asia Miles these days too.

  • I suggest checking when the award seats open and redeem shortly after they open (e.g. 360 days before date of flight). That's the only way to redeem multiple award tickets on some routes.

Booking Qantas via Asia miles has less award availability but they are usually fewer points to redeem. Also, have you looked at other One World airlines? There is usually some availability on other One World partner airlines (e.g. Qatar HKG>DUB = 120k Asia Miles (~15 hrs in J).

P.S. Transfer your Amex points to your FF of choice before the changes in April when they get devalued!

  • You will need more points and perfect timing to nab the award tix for those routes at that time of year for that number of pax. With careful planning/luck you might get one or two segments in J for 1 or 2 pax via QF partners but expect taxes/fees to be high.

    • Thank you!
