Help with broken Macbook Air. Please recommend trustworthy repair shop!

So my old macbook air died on me. It's pretty old so warranty has expired. It probably is still cheaper to fix it than buy a new one. Anyone know any shop around sydney city area that can repair it for a fair price? Thanks.

    What happened to it?

  • Its really old. And one day refuses to power up. Nothing happens when I press the power button.

How old is it? As a product gets older, the cost of repair increases as parts for them become hard to find and less people know how to service them. You might be better off with a replacement.

    • It's about 6 years old. It's a second hand. Is that too old to repair?

That's quite old. Also since its a laptop many parts are soldered together and can't be simply swapped out. If a critical component has failed (like the motherboard), it's basically impossible to fix.
You could try calling up some places to get a quote but I doubt the price will be worthwhile.
Also the computer will be slowing due to age and it might not be long before something else fails.
It sounds like it has had a good run imo.

        • Thanks. I normally just use it for email and browsing so it serves its purpose. And watching YouTube.

Yeah just wondering if anyone here has experience with laptop repairs and shops to recommend.

          • @Jared17: You can get a very basic laptop for about $300 so it wouldn't be worthwhile to repair unless it is something very simple, but you could get someone to take out the hard drive and recover all your data

  • Have you tried to Google around to see if there are any videos on repairs. When I, accidentally, spilt water on my man’s computer Mac laptop the repair guy said it wasn’t worth what it was going to cost. My man found a video, got the special Mac tools and dried it out. It’s worked fine since. You are probably going to find the repair cost is too expensive but good luck.

    • Thanks bro but being a tech noob I will probably make it worse if I attempted to repair it

      • No probs. I just think you are going to find out it is cheaper to buy another than repair. Maybe look at second hand/refurbished.

Then again, dead is dead how much worse can you make it :)

        • Lol true didn't think of that.

    • Sounds like you got lucky. Water damage often destroy components which would make it very expensive to fix.

The man is an electrical engineer, but yes we were very lucky. We also acted quickly to get it out of the water and let it dry a while before turning it on again. It only took him two goes to reassemble it so the keyboard was plugged in properly too. The instructions we found were really good.

The classic we had was our old TV was making hissing noises, we took the cover off and tipped it forward to look at it. We saw a pool of water on the table. The water had been running down some damaged cables from the outside aerial and was skimming the circuit boards. Replace the aerial cable, dry out the tv with hair dryer and good as new.

  • Did you try holding down what is the option key or whatever when powering on? I had a MacBook Pro refuse to charge after a messy breakup, it had just enough juice for me to extract my offline files. the chassis was too bent to bother with repair, but maybe it would have been a simple solder, probably an expensive mainboard replacement.

    • Please explain on messy breakup, sounds like it was thrown at you.

      • The MacBook was thrown very hard at a door I was behind. It was the big MacBook too :(

        • Ahh, don’t leave anything expensive and portable in the same place as an argument. Sounds like the break up was a good idea, though.

    • Yeah i tried everything. Googled the troubleshoot for this situation. Called apple hotline. Went to Apple store. All unhelpful.

  • Have you tested the power supply. Maybe that is broken?

    • Thanks i did. It charged normally to full power till green light.

a Mac that is broken? I thought macs were supposed to be indestructible and lasted millennia or is that just the cafe set justifying the horrendous price for a mac?

    • YOu want to cite me one URL that claims this; or are you just being a bogan.

  • wtf I'm not a bogan (profanity), just was a tongue in cheek comment given the years of Mac duffs sprouting claims that the Mac never breaks down now go away
