Does Anyone Here Work in Electronics Repair and Would Be Able to Provide a Document Detailing Damage to Device?

I know this it is a very specific request but I can't think of anything else to do.

Short story is that a buyer has return an item (a Nintendo Switch) which has been damaged, that I had sold Brand New in Box.
PayPal requires a 'damaged doc' detailing the damage to the item from a 'a professional, independent source'.
If anyone can help, it would be very much appreciated.

My "Buyer Opened a 'Significantly Not as Described' PayPal Dispute from a Purchase over Three Months Ago" post.

Full details of PayPal's request:

Please provide us with the following information before 3 April 2019:

  • damaged doc

We received your report that you have received your merchandise back from the buyer. Your report states that the item was returned in a state other than how it was originally sent out (damaged or altered). If possible, the document should include a serial number and description of the item. If possible, the document should be on letterhead and include the name, address, and phone number of the individual, business, or organization so that we may contact them if necessary.

In order to proceed with our investigation of your appeal, we must receive a report (such as an invoice or an evaluation) from a professional, independent source that details the damage, alteration, or missing parts regarding your returned merchandise.

I'm really not sure what to suggest but if you really can't figure anything out by the deadline, take loads of pics of the damage and upload them as proof. It's probably the most you can do to show it. Good luck man, really sucks there's idiots like this out there.

    • Thanks, given such an impossible deadline, there not much else I can do. I'll try it anyway.

Did the buyer do a switch-a-roo? that is, they already had a damaged Nintendo Switch, and they 'switched it' with your brand new one and made a false claim that they got a significantly not as described product?

If so, there would be a difference in serial number in between the 2 devices.

        • Possibly but I didn’t record the serial when I posted it.
I suspect it’s more of a case of them damaging it considering it took 3 months to open a case.

Edit: I remember some people asking for the serial number before purchasing. Have double checked and the serial number matches so no switch-a-roo.

          • @FireRunner: If you don't mind being unethical you could ask to try a Switch in a shop and take a photo of its serial.

            • @Quantumcat: Took me a minute to figure out what you meant.
Even if I did, I don't think it would change anything.
If a damaged charging port and half-twisted-off screws aren't enough to convince PayPal, I doubt different serial numbers are going to do anything.

              • @FireRunner: True, I got screwed by a buyer when they claimed not as described and sent through pictures of their 3DS with a different serial number to mine, which I had photos of.

  • If you google "Nintendo switch repairs", it looks like most cell phone repair shops will have a crack at repairing them.

The good news is, I don't think it's an impossible task to get the quote in 3 days - take it to your local china town and they'll do it. The shit thing is, they'll charge you for the letter and no one is going to compensate you for it. You'll still be out of pocket $100 or more and might have to send the item back to the purchaser, if its decided in your favor.

I would open a FoS dispute against Paypal. They'll probably settle with you for $200 and you can sell the broken unit for parts for ~150 … probably best outcome you can hope for.

    • I google it, no results for anything local.
      Edit: What's FoS?

      • Possibly financial ombudsman

FOS was the Financial Ombudsman Service.

FOS is now AFCA - The Australian Financial Complaints Authority https://www.afca.org.au/

        • Having photo evidence of external damage is not enough? What a joke.

Yeah I would go through the financial ombudsman if PayPal won't accept that and gives you unreasonable time to prove damage through a third party.

          • @lint: I'm not buying into merits or specifics of the dispute at hand here.

Just helping with information on FOS vs AFCA.

          • @lint: I’ve never heard of them before. Do I need to contact them before Paypal closes the case?

    • Thanks mate, AFCA (formerly FoS) sorted the dispute.

Not sure where you're located but Nintendo head quarters are located in Scoresby (south east Melbourne). No harm in calling or dropping by to ask if there's anybody able to provide you an evaluation.

All you'd need is a company to provide you a letter stating "console has clearly been damaged by incorrect use and careless charging procedure" on a company letterhead.

Otherwise like others have said, upload a bunch of photos but also get a stat-dec signed stating the facts. Better than nothing I suppose.

    • After arriving at the Nintendo head office do you seriously expect a technician to come down and inspect the device? I doubt the staff at reception would even know where to direct such a query.

  • Try eb games

  • That's a bit of a setup. I think it would cost $150+ and take some time.

An damage appraisal by Nintendo would cost $50 + postage costs. Turn over time is 10 days so it’s not even an option unless I can convince PayPal to extend deadline

  • Ask paypal for a time extension, and for an alternative arrangement such as mailing it to their evaluators or choice of repair shop at their expense.
I realize this choice may not be provided by paypal. Anyway, good luck.
