The alcohol content is quite weak, one would expect an IPA to be at least 5.0+. I'll pass on this deal thanks.

    • +10

You're going to discount potentially great tasting beer over a fraction of a % of alcohol? Do you only drink for alcoholic content? What about the bigger picture? Or are you some kind of elitist/gatekeeper that states IPA can only be xyz%?

      • +4

        IPA. needs to be 7%

      • +5

Do you know where IPA came from? Ie the history?

      • -3

Yep, most of the time it is alcoholic content that takes my money. Don't go all philosophical on me about what the bigger picture is supposed to be, its just a beer and nothing more.

      • +6

I have found that IPAs lower than 6-7% tend to lack in the flavour department.

Which I lament sometimes, as I'd like to enjoy >2 without finding myself on my arse.

(If somebody would like to prove me wrong, Bentspoke Sprocket and Brew Dog Elvis Juice are my two favs atm)

        • Both those beers are fantastic!

        • It has a strong passionfruit flavour, far from a traditional IPA, and is more in line with a session IPA.

          • +3

@Soluble: Gold Cliff is Kona's full strength IPA at 7.2%.

I doubt that the retailer would be able to offer that at $59 a case though!

      • +4

Without alcohol content backing, IPA doesn't taste great. Should you drink a scotch with only 20% alcohol and claim it tastes nice and doesn't matter?
You should drink none alcohol beer, they really taste ok, why bother real beer?

        • -1

Don't slippery slope me. You're exaggerating the point I was making.

          • +2

@shiny1: The scotch analogy was a straw man, not a slippery slope ;)

            • -1

@eggboi: Nice, will remember that. I had to look it up but the example didn't match, so I went with the other one instead.

      • If it tastes good - Nothing. The key is always to find something as an individual you enjoy, with the key focus on find. The question is: can you increase your odds of finding something that you think will taste good by looking at other indicators?

If you have an idea about the historical production (how the ingredients would ferment with traditionally used yeasts to make the expected taste) you can have an idea of what % alcohol to expect. This isn't important for the increase in drunkenness but for the mouthfeel and flavouring from other side product ester the yeast produce.

Its not to say it won't taste good. Just that it may taste different. If I got a steak dinner that tasted like a block of cadbury chocolate I'd still like the taste and say that it tastes good. I wouldn't order it again as a steak dinner though.

And that really is the point of comments on OzBargain. Get other people's experience, another indicator, so you can make a decision if its a product for you.

      • The thing is, a "session" (lower alcohol) IPA is really a pointless creation because none of them can replicate the taste of a full strength IPA.

If you want to drink a beer with lower alcohol content, you'd be better off choosing a well made beer in a style that typically produces a lower alcohol content (e.g. a pilsner, lager etc.).

Every session IPA I've ever drunk is either horribly unbalanced (generally too many hops without the malt / residual sugar backbone to balance them out) or lacking in mouth feel for the same reasons.

The only reason I can think of for their existence is so that people who don't like IPAs can feel like part of the trendy craft beer crowd by drinking a watered down version of them.

        • They benefit the brewers - lower alcohol content means a lower excise tax on them, so can sell them cheaper. Also means you need twice as many, so higher volume of purchases.

    • +3

If it tastes good what does it matter?

      • Exactly.

      • If it tastes good - Nothing. The key is always to find something as an individual you enjoy, with the key focus on find. The question is: can you increase your odds of finding something that you think will taste good by looking at other indicators?

    • +6

So true. IPA at 4.5% is pissweak.

    • +3

i thought the same then went for the pale ale at 5.9% :)

  • +1

    Not their Brown Ale?

  • +5

The Longboard is actually amazing for a Lager, no where near the average boring lager

    • +1

Can second this. Visited their brewery a few years back in Kona and they're all great.

      • Guava IPA was nice but it didn't taste anywhere remotely like IPA. I would buy that again.

  • +2

Love the Big Wave, super easy drinking with a big citra hit

  • Kona Hanalei Island IPA is really nice, cellarbrations had it for $45 a few weeks ago

    • +9

How come you didn't post that to OzBargain! Awesome deal.

      • first time id seen it on australia, didn't realize it was xheap till a few weeks later, kicking myself only bought 1 case

  • LBL what a great beer. I look forward to more beer posts from this vendor OP.
    Thanks

    • +6

Glad you like that brew! We're working hard to hunt down strong beer deals!

  • Interested for hubby as we visited the brewery there a few years …are they short dated?

    • +4

Happy to report all our Kona Brewing Co. beers are fresh.

      Cheers!

      • +1

Ok great thanks will grab a second case then 😄

  • +1

Had Kona Longboard Lager at Bondi Pizza. Tastes great

  • Great beers! Highly recommend

  • +2

OP are you able to do a mixed case, 6 of each?

    • Sorry - we can only send straight cases on this deal.

      Cheers!

  • +1

    Thank you!
    1x Fire Rock
    1x Hanalei and
    1x Big Wave ordered.

    • +2

Awesome! You'll have a nice full fridge. Cheers!

  • +3

It's a shame you can't get a mixed case. I'd love 8 pale ale, 8 IPA, 4 lager and 4 golden ale for that price.

    • +1

I love mixed cases, hard to get a real taste for a new beer with just one or two.

      • +2

Think how more sales they could be making just by getting one of their warehouse staff members to shuffle a few 4 packs around in the boxes. Seems silly not to. I for one would buy a case if they did that.

  • -3

Love Kona, but 24 bottles are too many

  • Plus $15 credit if you sign up and make your first order?

    • This deal can't be used in conjunction with other special offers as the beers are already super discounted. Cheers!

  • I agree a mixed case would be great for trying out a new brand :(

  • +1

Kona make a great beer. Used to run a beer bar in Tokyo and their big wave was my go to to try and get people away from only drinking Heineken or Coronas. Give it a shot

  • +9

    Just for transparency:

This beer is not made in Hawaii.

It also doesn't meet the Brewers Association definition of craft beer as AB InBev have a 30+ percent stake in their parent company.

    • -1

We can vouch for its quality - all four brews are topnotch.

More info can be found on the brewery here: https://konabrewingco.com/ for anyone that is interested.

      • +6

I'm sure it's fine. Just pointing out that the marketing is BS and it isn't craft beer, despite being produced by Craft Brew Alliance and sold by Craft Cartel. :)

    • Where is it brewed? Out of interest!

      • +3

        It's in the first link

Kona Brewing parent company Craft Brew Alliance Inc. produces most of the beer in the continental U.S. — in the decidedly non-tropical regions of Oregon, Washington state, New Hampshire, and Tennessee

      • +6

        According to the article:

Oregon, Washington State, New Hampshire, and Tennessee.

Not surprising really. Brewing a good beer in the tropics is tough because of the ambient temperatures you have to deal with.

        • Ta!

    • Which means you're better off buying it from InBev @ BoozeBud

  • Free delivery

  • They are great tasting beers! Highly recommend giving them a shot.

    • which one is more bitter with caramel malt, bigwave or ipa?

      • The IPA is super fruity. The comments above about it being too weak for an IPA(It's more of a session ipa) the passionfruit flavour kinda over powers it.

So get on the bigwave if that's not for you. It was a little while ago I tried them, but I think it was a similar taste to the two birds golden.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Ordered one Pale Ale.
Keen to see more of your deals.

  • Thanks! Ordered and included a can of Green Beacon red dead I've been wanting to try

    • +1

The Red is real nice - I reckon last year’s brew was better, but still a solid red IPA.

  • +1

Ordered a slab of the Longboard.

    Looking forward to trying it.

  • Not sure the taste but free delivery is awesome

  • +1

Great deal for great beer. Ordered 2 cases.

  • +1

Been waiting for their Castaway IPA in Australia since they started to appear here but alas! None here either. Might try the other IPA here but according to this site the Castaway is slightly better

  • +1

to those that have tried both the Fire Rock and Longboard, what differences have you noticed in flavour? I have only tried longboard, which i like, but tempted to try
another one, but dislike supper bitter beers. Also would love a mixed case, for future reference rep.

  • I elected Pick Up. Will I get an email or text letting me know when it's ready or do I just rock up?

  • Just ordered two slabs. Thanks OP!

  • Cheaper at BoozeBud with offers

  • I usually get deliverables sent to a parcel locker. Assuming these are not appropriate to be sent like this? If not, is my best option to just have these sent to my house and when I'm not there they'll be sent to a local post office?

  • Did anyone get an email receipt when purchasing ?

    • My confirmation did not go to my main inbox

  • Cheers OP, grabbed a box of the Pale to try :)

  • Just a heads up: if only half of your order arrived - no surprises here but the demand was overwhelming. Customer service were very helpful and told me more stock is coming in today and will be promptly shipped out.

  • havent even heard that mine have shipped.
    slightly annoying a week later

    • Yeah same here. I forgot about it until this morning.

    • Ditto. Got an email 9 days ago saying order had been received, and my credit card payment was quickly processed.

Unfortunately, I have yet to receive an email confirming delivery so I can't track it. A courtesy email explaining the delay would be appreciated, but maybe I'm expecting too much.

      • +1

looks like they can take the order very easily, but slow to fullfill !! They misjudged Ozbargain love of beer.

        • Just got that courtesy email now. No tracking number, but supposedly my beer is on the way.

  • ALL ORDERS DISPATCHED ACCORDING TO THE EMAIL THEY JUST SENT OUT:

Thank you for purchasing some Kona Brewing beer during last week's Happy Hour sale.

Just a quick note to let you know that due to the popularity of the sale, your order might take a few extra days to get to you.

All orders have been dispatched, so if you haven't received your beer it will be with you in the next couple of days.

I'd like to assure you this beer is super fresh. We ordered it from the distributor especially for this sale.

Thanks so much for your understanding. We'll have your beers chilling in your fridge very soon!

    Cheers,
    Ben

  • Carton 2 of 2 arrived today, all in all I'm a happy customer
