Licence Number (Including Expiry Date), Date of Birth and Address. What They Can Do with It?

Hi All,

I am just wondering if someone has my licence number (including expiry date), date of birth and address. What they can do with it?

I just gave my information to sign up with one of the telcos from online chat.

If they misuse the information, what the can do with them?

Please advise.

  • Credit check probably

  • They can assume your identity.

    • Ok.. so how to avoid this?
So many people order online via chat…
      Is this risky?

You cannot. You will need to start a new life tomorrow. Goodbye blitzzbargain.

Why on earth would you type out your personal details onto a chat that you know is probably some offshore call center?

They're unlikely to do anything with your driving license details nor will you be able to prove it if they did, but if you also sent your card details over chat then I would cancel it and get a new one issued.

    • They will make an ass of u and me

  • Ironically, one would normally give stolen information to a telco to scam someone else using two-factor authentication, either via the port-out scam (from another carrier) or SIM hijacking (replacing a "lost" or "damaged" SIM card).

  • make an afterpay account on your behalf

  • Your Ozb Membership could be compromised

    • Damn, and I only paid 100 envelops for my premium account yesterday…

Detect draft dodgers. Borrow overdue library books.

But if the books are overdue, how can you borrow them?

      • Slow librarian. Medical episode maybe. Opaque brown tights static incident.

  • someone with the front of your license can open sim cards in your name and use that to open other things. I don't know how you would become aware of this, until you start receiving mail for things you don't recognise

if they know your number then they can steal your current number in a few minutes (on prepaid at least)
this would basically mean someone could start to hijack other accounts that use your phone number for security, before you even notice your phone has a problem

Driver's license is "powerful" enough to be an inconvenience and/or nuisance, but nothing serious enough where you'll be at risk of being locked up by the AFP.

As several other people have mentioned, they can open prepaid phone accounts under your name, but unless they're planning to do some really shady stuff with it, I don't see why it would make sense for anyone to really do this. They won't be able to access bank accounts or anything more serious unless they also have access to those details and obviously they won't be able to do anything that requires going into a branch.

I'd say damage is pretty limited, I've given my license details and asked for license details before in the event of a traffic accident. I didn't really think twice about identity theft or anything of the sort.
