Looking to Move to Boost Mobile. Help Needed

Hi guys, I wanted to subscribe to Boost Mobile 12-Month Prepaid: 240GB $300 deal from here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/440667. At the moment I am with Optus on $40 Sim only plan on a 12 months contract which is expiring soon. Am I able to move my number to Boost mobile? I hear some people's porting get stuck for months. If it get stuck will I still be able to use my existing number in the mean time? And can porting be done online? Thanks in advance.

  • I recently moved from Optus to boost. It took around 12 hours and yes you can request it online. You can buy the sim online for $2 or at JB Hi-Fi for $2, JB Hi-Fi is easier. If you leave the house, take your boost SIM card with you just Incase your port happens during a time your not home (happened to me).

Am I able to move my number to Boost mobile?

Yes, do it after your contract ends unless you want to pay Optus termination fee.

And can porting be done online?

All porting are initiated online, at your own leisure, whenever you want

I hear some people's porting get stuck for months. If it get stuck will I still be able to use my existing number in the mean time?

    1. When you get your Boost SIM, go to their website to activate/port your number
    2. Your existing SIM is still usable until your number has been ported to Boost successfully
    3. Change your old SIM to new SIM when your current coverage says SOS

Stuck stories you read on the internet are referring to failed porting after the old provider releases the number. This is very rare. If this happens to you, congrats, you just got hit by a bus.

Just to add for maybe a bit more peace of mind for you, I've ported my number at least 5 or maybe 6 times in the last 10 years. Never had any down time.

    • That's my experience as well, I guess I've posted more than 10 times in the last 10yrs.
The only problem I had was when porting from Telstra to another MVNO that used the Telstra network. $2 sim I bought from Woolies did not work but displayed an error along the lines of "Porting from Telstra requires a special sim card that can only be ordered by contacting us via the number below …"
I just ported to a different network and back to the new MVNO on the same day.

  • I used to port my number every 1-2 months (#ozbargainlife). The most it ever took was 6 hrs. All done online

  • Remember to buy the $300 voucher from Woolies to get 5% off with WISH gift cards.
Also using AMEX platinum edge to buy the gift card gives you 3 points per dollar :P

    • I'm looking at doing this with WISH gift cards but am unclear. Would you mind going into a bit more detail? How do I use the gift card with Boost Mobile?

Haha, well you simply need to buy a $2 sim and a recharge voucher from woolies, and pay using the WISH gift card. The voucher code can be used to recharge once the sim is active.

        • Hi FirstWizard, do you happen to know if this can be done at self checkout?

    • Can anyone confirm that the rollover of unused data is also applies to 12 months expiry plan?

In the terms & conditions it says: Rollover unused data to use within your next recharge on all 28 day expiry plans.

It does not explicitly say for 6 or 12 months expiry plan.

  • Yes, you can buy the $2 SIM as well as the voucher at the Woolies/Coles checkout with Groceries.

Just be aware there is a new SIM starter kit for $2 sold at supermarket and they are the new SIM and you may need to wait for 24hours before it can be activated on the Boost network - apparently these new SIMs needs that lead time before they can be activated. The old SIM cards sold at like 7-eleven can be used straightaway - that's my experience.

I think the rollover of data doesn't work in 6 or 12 months expiry.

From any Telstra MVNO to Boost porting is superfast - around 2mins to my experience. My friend's took 4hours to portout of Kogan.

Lastly, I would suggest to use a voucher instead of recharge using your Cc as Auto Recharge can be a pain if you don't like that.

  • I just activated 2 Sims bought at Coles last week. Porting both numbers took 5 minutes. Both of them recharged with the $150 12 months prepaid bought also at Coles.

    • Its been more than 15 hours for me and still waiting. Porting from Kogan to Boost.

      • In the same boat here - moving two servies from Kogan to Boost. How long did your process take in the end?

        • Hey mate
How long did it end up taking assuming you've now been ported?

  • Same here, I bought 2-365 days sims, ported number, and then have had emails (1 each number)….
Live chat was basically telling me 4 hours to 72 hours, as they have a system upgrade happening….and of no further help, meanwhile my partner andI have no phones.
“Please contact us about your request to
    switch to Boost Mobile

    Hi MICHAEL,

We're very sorry. We're experiencing some technical issues with our online activation system, and were unable to switch your number to Boost Mobile.

To make the switch now contact our Boost Mobile Live Chat team, we're available 24x7.”

    Part of the email….
Was looking forward to using the network, as I haven’t been a telstra mobile since the old 018 days, but seems the service issues haven’t changed,
