Logitech Z906 Speakers Keep "Popping" When Turned on

The speakers I've had for 6 years have started to make an electrical pop, before going silent for a couple of seconds (roughly the same amount of time it takes for them to turn on) and then continuing to play music. It will even pop when there's no music playing. I've tried opening up the subwoofer casing in the hope I'd find something loose, but as I don't have any experience with boards, I came up short (pun intended).

Some of the troubleshooting I've tried:

  • removing each separate speaker (full setup consists of 6 speakers, 1 subwoofer, 1 console)
  • playing music without much base
  • different cords
  • different power points

Things I haven't tried:

  • replacing the subwoofer or console with someone else's (I don't know anyone with these speakers, but that would be the next logical step for me)
  • opening the console (figured it wouldn't help as I don't know what to look for)

I would go out and get new speakers, but I also want to try my hand at fixing them. All YouTube videos I've watched where you hold down two buttons and magic occurs to fix it haven't helped. Furthermore, I don't actually know what the reason for the popping is. I'd imagine it's tripping/shorting out somewhere but I can't say.

Here is a video of the popping. It starts JUST after a pop (silence), and a few seconds in it pops again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpsVQKsRao4&feature=youtu.be

Does anyone have advise they can give regarding this?
Much appreciated, thanks!

  • Your speakers don't like jazz.

    • Neither does YouTube. I've now been served with a copyright infringement.

  • When I've had this happen, it was a bug in the music player and fixed by installing another the codec. Have you tried hooking up the Z906's to a different source (like a TV), maybe via Optical or RCA?

The Z906's will also pop if there is a transition from no signal to signal, but the pop is much louder than what you have in the video.

    • Have hooked up to Xbox/PC/Tongue/Phone/Partner's Phone/AUX/Optical/TV without any luck

I'm guessing it's a bad capacitor or something else wrong in the power supply.

Can you see the lights on the main console very quickly turn off then back on?

If you know how to solder, or have a friend who does, then have a look at the power supply in the subwoofer.
Most of the time it's just a faulty capacitor, but finding it, and if it's easily replaced is another story.

edit to add: I have no experience with this specific speaker system. skid's comment seems more helpful and specific to your situation.

    • The lights flash the starting sequence when if pops as if I've turned them on manually.
Might have to give that a shot :) thanks!

      • Hmm be careful with capacitors or any type of electrical work. Those things can still hold a charge.

  • Mine pop loudly everytime I turn the power on to the powrboard with my PC/speakers/monitor/etc. This is normal right? Haha.

Mine do that too - that never seemed to be an issue

  • I've had my Z906 for about the same length of time, and I do recall hearing some pops and crackles when powering them on from time to time (but the subsequent loss of sound for a few seconds you're describing). Heck, I've gone through 4 different sets of Logitech speaker systems (2 x 2.1 sets and 2 x 5.1 sets) and I think they all had popping/crackling issues at some point during their lifetime.

Not a consistent issue with the Z906 in my experience, but I recall after switching from the optical TOSLINK cable to the 3.5mm connectors, the problem didn't seem to reoccur. Also, the sound quality seemed to be much better since my Creative Sound Blaster ZX oundcard didn't actually support a lot of driver features/sound enhancements over optical connections (the Dolby/DTS decoding seemed to be the weakest feature of the Z906 imo).

Also, as has been suggested already, try a few different kinds of media (lossy, lossless, 2 channel, 5.1 channel, etc.) with a few different media players (VLC, MPC-HC) that use different decoders and ensure that the issue does occur in all of those use cases and isn't limited to a certain codec/software combination.
