Local Huggies factory closing down

Noticed in the news that Huggies is sadly closing its Australian factory and moving manufacturing to Asia.

I often see Huggies products on the front page of OzBargain (and I've been snapping up the deals as we have a baby on the way) so thought this would be worth noting.

There's always a chance it will change the quality of the nappies and whatever else the local factory produces, so I imagine any near-term Huggies deals will remain popular.

The union for the workers has refused to accept the decision and will try this week to convince management to go back on it.

Lol umm how can they refuse them to close?

One day unions will realise that by constantly demanding higher and higher pay increases, that more manufacturers will just move production overseas. Just ask the automotive industry…

He called on the Morrison government to consider intervening to support Australian jobs, whether through meetings with the company or more drastic action such as emergency tariffs.

    De ja vu, automotive industry

The other side of this coin is if the local wages are being levered lower based on the threat of an overseas move where local wages can never be comparative….and no, I have no idea who is at fault in the Huggies decision and, yes, unions can certainly overplay their hand.

I'll wait to see if Huggies dramatically reduce their local prices now they've (presumably) slashed costs…..after all surely they must be attaining substantial business cost reductions in order to make this decision.

    • I think that line just means the union refused to accept the decision was needed. Australian manufacturing is actually more competitive than it was when the automotive industry died, as the Aussie dollar has weakened in the last year and many think it could get weaker.

Demanding higher wages. That never get paid.

We need the higher wages to pay for the sky rocketing house prices. The root od all our demons.

"Production will move to Kimberly-Clark's facilities in Asia, enabling faster access to the latest research and engineering advancements in nappies and pants,"

    lol.

    • I saw that too and thought “bollocks”.

    • can't wait for Smart Nappies. Running out? Just say Hi Huggies, buy me more. Or, Hi Huggies, what's the temperature of my baby's poop?

Come on Greenies where are you? What a shame a plant is closing - how about thinking of the environment and encouraging parents to use cloth nappies.
