Leaf Blower Working 3.30am, Is It Normal?

I live in an unit block next to busy road.

This week, got woken up middle of night at least 3 days, by a leaf blower on duty at 3.30am.
I would like to admit that day light saving change and raining weather could also playing tricks on my body clock. Still, it is very hard to go back to sleep as I will need to get up in two hours time.

Any suggestions? Will start on earplugs and put down my phone for now…

Thank you for everyone's input, I will complain to the council after confirms it is a leaf blower.
Happy weekend!

Someone leaf blowing at 3.30am knows they're being an a-hole. Either they're insanely inconsiderate or they're doing it deliberately to annoy someone.

I'm pretty sure you get a free leaf blower when you buy a jet ski so that you can act like a a-hole more often.

  • busy road.

Anything goes when living next to arterial roads.

  • Day light savings change? You scared me for a second..

    • sorry to scare you, hour change only this weekend

      • no!…it changes this coming weekend 7th April

A council leaf blower? Definitely complain to the council.

Or a private citizen doing some cleaning? Put grout in their tyres.

Are you sure it's a leaf blower? We sometimes have a council street-sweeper go past in the early hours that sounds a lot like a blower (or large vacuum).

    • I'd still complain about a street sweeper at 3:30am. Thats just ridiculous.

More ridiculous to sweep on a busy road at other times. Councils don't like angry motorists.

Street sweeping should be done at a time with the least amount of traffic. 03:30 sound about right.

        • 5:30 or 6 I could understand. There’s not
Much traffic then. But 3:30? No way.

      • where i live, every other day at around 1-2am the street sweeper comes. if all windows n doors closed i can still hear the buzzing sound but if asleep, i wont get woken up by it.
if they open, then it's so f-ing noisy.

i dont live on major arterial road (nearby but not on it) but can be quite busy during peak hours.
written to council once via email but didnt get useful enough response.. given up - just close all doors and windows

Are you in NSW? If it is a leaf blower, then they may be in breach of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Noise Control) Regulation 2017. There are prescribed times for the use of such devices. Download the EPA Noise Guide for Local Government to find the process for complaints relating to that noise. There are tests to establish if the noise is considered "offensive". At that time, I believe such noise must be inaudible in a habitable room.

    • will read it

      • yes, NSW

  • Yes normal, for Dracula and his families

I've experienced this exact problem. I've lodged complaints with council a few years ago about it, and cant recall in recent times having heard the leaf blower in action, so figured some action must have been taken. I remember referencing the EPA noise guidelines.

    Earplugs can also help.

    • thanks for this, will try.
could be the exact same blower changed places :-)

    • Trust me, as someone who does sleep with earplugs they don't help, leaf blowers might as well be drilling directly into your head. I used to live near a school who leaf blowed three times a week at 6am, even 3M industrial ear muffs over top of the plugs wasn't enough. I've never encountered another noise so antithetical to sleep.

      • For me, earplugs are enough to take the edge off noise that would otherwise wake you. With the leaf blower, it was the noise to a degree but then the rage that they think its OK to do at 3am that would keep me awake as its such a crap noise to try and block out.

Particularly the on/off nature of it - he'd go hammer and tong for 10 seconds, then stop, then start, then stop. Dare I say it, it'd almost be better if it was just constantly on.

        • so agree with the on and off thing

      • i also find leaf blower's noise more annoying than others, could it be the high pitch created?
How do you find sleeping with ear muffs? I am considering but yet used to it.

  • They might want fresh eggs for breakfast
