Personal Breathalyser

Hubby wants to get a breathalyser as the new site he works on frequently does random testing.
Need one that is pretty accurate and hopefully no more than $300. I understand they need to be calibrated every 6 months or so. Would love some recommendations.
Cheers.
Edit___ he has to be 0.0, so it's not being used to push the limit for drink driving.

Some OzBargainer listed this on one of the AliExpress deals:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Professional-Digital-Breath-…

Not to get on the soapbox but how often is he drinking during the week that he needs to consider a breathalyzer to ensure he meets OHSP?

Generally, you are tested for alcohol on your breath by a seperate machine. If this is the case, no $300 machine will save you if you you've been drinking…

To clarify, initially you are tested by counting 1-10 into a machine, this detects alcohol on your breath, and if you're in a small area like your car where you've been breathing, it'll pick it up in the air.

This sometimes triggers false readings for the designated drivers who have passengers that have been drinking but it goes to show how sensitive the machines are…

Don't drink, save $300 and your job.

    • "Don't drink, save $300 and your job."

That is right, save money not drinking alcohol and not needing to buy expensive gadgets. You should be telling him off for drinking too much.

  • or just be responsible?

  • Check the specs as sensors often have a margin of error, or at least test for zero well before it's needed. The first tests performed by police aren't very accurate, hence the option of blood tests and second tests. If the job requires 0.0, he probably should be blowing 0 the night before.

Please tell me he isn't a pilot.

  • Just dont drink 12hrs before a shift. I have to be 0 for work and don't feel the need to own a breathalyzer. If you are struggling to stay 0 for work there may be other issues you need to look at in your life 😂

  • If you want a real Breathalyzer, you have to spend $700+ for it.
A brand like Lion Alcometer is one i recommend. It is used by the Police which gives you an indication.
I purchased mine off eBay for $700 second hand Vic Pol used.
It is expensive however it may stand up in court if there were any conflicts/inconsistencies.
I does need to be calibrated though at every 6 month intervals so it is not cheap. ~ $100

It is the exact unit that you would have seen used on the Booze buses a few years ago, with the external white mouthpiece.
My one is monochrome LCD display, where the newer ones are colour.

    Just my two cents.

    Cheers

fyi, you can elect for a blood test as an option. my understanding is it takes longer to leave the blood stream so may in fact be higher.

I think any magistrate would laugh at your breathalyser over the police one thats frequently calibrated.

      • magistrates don't have much of a sense of humour IMO

      • well it's the same unit that was used by them and is frequently calibrated from the same manufacturer that comes with a certificate so i assume there is a leg to stand on.
Are you a Magistrate or work for law enforcement that can substantiate your view?

        • perhaps you can cite some previous legal cases where the personal breathalyzer trumped the police station one?

          • @Davo1111: No i can't. Why? because i use the device when i go out the ensure I'm under the limit.
You'll be the first to know if that happens.

            …. Back to you

It may stand up in court if there were any conflicts/inconsistencies.

Maybe in civil court but I'm pretty sure breathe analysis using portable machines isn't good enough for criminal court, could be wrong. It has to be breathe analysed using a more expensive machine at a police station or blood analysis.

    • I cant believe it, a non political comment by our resident green.

BTW its a great comment - well done

Just adding. Saying that you breath tested yourself and you were ok, isnt going to cut it legally. You are over the limited as tested by the police testing units. Thats what is used. "ignorance is no defence"

Just like .0499 is safe to drive where as .0501 isn't. One gets you charged, the other lets you off.

how is the breathalyser going to help.

if he is drinking during or just before work, he is still going to be over whether he has his own one or not.

sounds like he wants to test himself and if ok, sneak a beer in?

    • +1

if he self-tests (many sites have wall mounted kits on site you can self test before getting on the bus.). He can get a written warning rather than being terminated.

If he gets caught intoxicated at work, instant termination, plus would probably be blacklisted by the company.

by bus i guess is public bus to work and i guess if he is over he chucks a sick day? probrably get terminated for chucking a million sickies

i hope he doesn't have a job where other peoples lives are in his hands. i.e. drive a bus, fly a plane etc, use dangerous equipment.

        • i "assumed" OPs husband works on a FIFO mine site. (despite no evidence suggesting its the case)

        • No. He is a steel fixer. He is what I would say a.'functioning alcoholic'. He is in the process of reducing intake. We are both aware that he has a problem and are.looking at measures to reduce intake and not lose his job.

    • +1

Completely wrong. He does have issues and never drinks before work or during. It's not about cheating the system, but rather make sure he is ok to provide for his family. He acknowledges that he drinks too much after work and we are working on this
Not looking for negative feedback as we have enough going on
Just hoping that this can bring him a step forward and.be more accountable for.hos actions. Having worked in the industry for 20+ years he has never failed a breathalyser test. Just wanting to avoid one

      • again how is a breathalyser going to help? if he is over the limit, he is over the limit!

"he has never failed a breathalyser test. Just wanting to avoid one"

        avoid what?

your post makes no sense to me

        or is it this

1.) wake up, and do breath test
2.) if over limit chuck sick day

      • There is nothing cool about being a drunken fool.

As someone who has worked on many sites, those who are caught were perfectly aware what they were doing the night before.

The only exception is that some sites require a breathalyzer before you get onto the plane, so people who didnt take it seriously finish their shift, have a shower, and crack a cold one, only to find out it's treated the same as any other work day. These places spell it out, you get told multiple times, but as usual, you get the odd one that doesn't take it seriously.

I'm not trying to be rude, but i recommend that you get your husband to limit his drink intake so that it's not even a question whether he makes the limit 6+ hours later. Working on any site is inherently dangerous (although i'd argue safer than construction), and I wouldnt want to be the guy who fell asleep behind the wheel and killed someone else, all because I wanted to have a few drinks with the "boys" the night before.

I also wouldnt want to come home to my (non existant) wife and explain why i lost my career because i had a few too many while at work.

In all honesty, i treat my Fifo work as starting the night before the plane leaves, and doesnt stop until they key is in the door x days later. Yeah, people might see that as being a prude, but i can't afford to screw it all up. It's a 12 hr shift (might be more), you've then got 12 hrs to eat breakfast and dinner, pack a lunch, shower/wash, (travel time), and sleep 8+ hours. There's not a lot of time spare to be sitting around drinking.

I treat my job the same. If you are concerned about not blowing 0 while at a job with no tolerance, you need to either call in sick or find another job.

    • Thanks. We are working with a counselor and gp to reduce his intake. Unfortunately it comes down to…'everyone does it' which is not acceptable to me. He is trying his hardest to reduce. He isn't fifo.
You're not being rude. Just telling it how it is. Appreciate your advice.

All the best on finding a resolution 👍

      • If it's genuine, there are plenty of excuses to avoid being seen as weak infront of your friends. Including blood results have highlighted issues with my liver, which im not/cutting back drinking until it's resolved".

I suspect though, i dont think the social anxiety is the reason why hes drinking so much.

        best of luck with everything

  • my workplace has a zero tolerance for heroin usage.

some how, with a breathalyser, I have kept my heroin usage to zero.

  • Perhaps investing in some alcohol free beer? Flavour with no booze. Could be a “nicotine patch” for work nights?
