  • this would go great with my a5

  • Oh man, should I get this or Swan's D1080MKII 08? This is giving me a headache.

    • +2

if you dont know what audioengine is then you won't fork out $199 for 2.0 speakers

      do u mean condescending?

      • +8

No, he doesn't. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to get back to doing important things you wouldn't understand.

    • Added "speakers" to title, thanks for the suggestion.

I didn't mean to sound condescending, but I've previously had a lot of people posting who don't really know better :/

If you miss out on this deal, it's not much more expensive shipped from the US (about ~$245 AUD shipped).

    • But it's normally $249 at PCCG, so why would you bother to get it shipped from overseas?

      • It's normally $249… without shipping. To me, it'd be $288.

But considreing the warranty issue, I'd agree that getting it local is preferable.

        • Ah yes, right you are. Well it's $15 shipping for me. But yeah the warranty would be too much of a pain to deal with.

  • +2

I own these speakers, got them sent overseas from the US from a sellers on ebay. They sound quite good for their size, although they're a bit limited in the bass region of course. On mine they power adapter failed after a few months, and to get a replacement sent for free, I needed a US address. Buying these from a local provider will allow much easier shipping in case of problems, so is highly recommended over buying from overseas.

    • I have mine for about 3 years now, and the power adapter failed after 2 years, but was replaced by PCCG within warranty (3 yrs). Mine is connected to my HTPC and is always on as these suppose to have a power saving feature when not in use.

Buying local is definitely recommended, especially at this price!

  • +2

I was tempted to buy these last year but the price was just too dear for me (~$250+) so I decided to go for the M-Audio AV30's which cost me ~$160.
If these had been $200 back then, I would not have hesitated in buying them. This is definitely a good deal.

However, if you're someone who thinks the world of Logitech speakers, this deal is not for you :P lol

    • How do you find the M-Audio's? happy with them?

  • I was looking at these last year but ended up going for the Samson 3i from amazon, a great price at the time compared to here, even better now.

Just don't forget to flip the input voltage switch in the excitement of them arriving or you may have to go out and source a replacement fuse.

  • for heavy music listeners, this is a good deal! For gamers, you should rather spend $290 for a z5500! For myself, I'm quite happy with an A5! Incredible sound when I combine them with an Asus Xonar Essence XTS!

  • Great speakers, got a pair for $249 a little while back. If you are really into bass I might suggest picking up a sub from somewhere, I had one lying around from a really cheap home theatre system that I hooked up. A sub really brings out the sound!

  • PCcasegear also selling an Audioengine sub to be connected with these speakers! Just a bit pricey though!

    • +1

If you're gonna get the sub, you probably want to match it up with the A5s, not the A2s.

    • Wouldn't bother with their sub. Any sub will do the job just fine. It's just really to add a bit of depth. A cheapy from JB or something would do just fine (if you don't have one lying around)

  • Are these better than the Z2300 considering they're double the price and have no subwoofer?

    • if for audio quality yes, but not for the game.

    • +1

As bonbon pointed out, their sound quality will (subjectively) be higher, but they won't be able to produce much deep bass and do not have the same flood of muddy bass that tends to characterize Logitech's x.1 range. For their size they're impressive, but compared to full sized speakers of the same size, you may want to look elsewhere. I've heard good things about Microlab's 2.0 Solo range, but I can't recommend from personal experience.

  • These speakers are fantastic. Can't recommend them enough. Amazing sound for their size and great value. I think I paid $270 quite some time ago and even at that price am very happy.

  • damn it, i just placed order the AD900 headphones T_T.

    • Headphones vs speakers, 2 different things :) Given a good source you should enjoy your pick.

  • good idea to hook these up to a tv for movies video games ect?

    • For general use, you may want to look at something else, as the size of these speakers limits their ability to produce deep bass. You could look into the Corsair SP2500 or the higher end of the Microlab range, I've heard good things about both, but I can't recommend anything in this price range from personal experience for your usage.

Note that the amplifiers in these speakers are class AB. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_amplifier#Class_AB
For serious users of speakers you may want to invest in ones with class D amplifiers or better.
nevertheless, it is a good price for a pair of powered speakers =)

    how much does shipping cost?

    • -1

Class AB is leagues beyond class D for sound quality. Even the very best class D's still only just come close to the AB's and A's IMO. I'm not sure why you are warning people about this?

      • what are you basing your assertions on? if you're talking about the quality of class Ds maybe you wanna check out JBL EON or Mackie SRMv2. Not only do they give higher frequency range and less distortion but they are also more reliable and efficient.

You're right if you're talking about the older class D speakers - they don't sound as good compared to class ABs, but the newer high range class Ds are great in quality and more efficient. But yeah, my point is that for $200, these speakers are pretty bloody good

    • Shipping will probably depend on your location. There's a shipping estimator if you add items to your cart. For a quantity of 1 I got this to my postcode:
Standard Shipping (averages 2-5 days) $20
Express Shipping (averages 1-2 days) $15

    • AB B A C D G etc… are largely irrelevant thesedays.

Yes i actually do know what they mean, i've made a number of audio amplifiers of most of these classes (including discrete D class)

If you want a piece of advice, dont ever worry about the amplifier before worrying about the speaker, as its the speaker thats usually the weakest link in any audio chain.

Amp outputs from similar consumer categories will be identical to the ear, unless the amp uses enhancement algorithms, or used under high power. Take with caution any argument of X amplifier sounds better than Y amplifier of similar budget/rating.

  • I'm waiting for the A5's to go on special lol! Was actually hoping that they would be $350! Would have snapped the up for sure!

  • Are there available anywhere else other than PCCG yet?

    • +1

Maybe at some hifi stores, but it'll be difficult to find cheaper as they don't usually go on sale.
PCCG is the current Australian distributor anyway, and looks after warranty.

      • I hope more stores stock this and we can get more competition because I get the feeling that having a monopoly on this item in the future will mean they will hold a higher price.

        • They used to be stocked somewhere else (can't remember the name, but a few of the OCAU folk bought from them) but for reasons I can't remember you can no longer purchase from them.

PCCG is the only reseller and distributor listed by Audioengine, so maybe there's not enough demand for Audioengine to bother thinning out a bit. I would think it'd be most cost efficient to not sell a semi-bulky, reasonably low demand product to/from too many places.

  • Oh and guys leave a set for me, I haven't bought em yet :P

Get the Logitech Z5500D instead of this no name speaker, the Logitech Z5500D are THX certified and are much louder and better sounding, plus 5.1 channel surround sound for your games and movies. They are on special and you can pick them up for less than $299.00. I bought mine 5 years ago and they still sound great.

    • Get a real set of speakers instead of speakers made by a marketing department, the satellites of the Logitech Z5500D are made of plastic, plus since they are a 5.1 set, you're effectively paying for 6 speakers (thus amount of money spent on each speaker is less, meaning lower quality speakers). Music is recorded on 2 channels, so a good 2.0 or 2.1 setup will sound much better for the same price. The Logitech Z5500D are nearly always going to be on special somewhere and you can buy the A2s for less than $199. I think overpowered, muddy bass and a hollow midrange sounded great 5 years ago and still do.

Sorry about that, I copy pasted your text but I always got that :S

The Z5500 might have their place, but they're certainly not a direct replacement for the A2s.

    • No name? Better sounding? You've got to be kidding me.

I've got a set of Z-5500s and, while they are good for gaming, sound terrible for other purposes. They have good highs and lows (sometimes the bass is overbearing, but you can tune it down) but terrible mids - if you're listening to a lot of music or watching movies with heavy dialogue, they sound aweful.

    • Z5500D is passable for gaming if you really want 7.1. If you want a small of speakers (because monitors are too large for your desk/room) which actually has better all-round sound quality, then A2 is a good choice.

I ended up getting Aktimate Mini's with ASUS Essence STX… :)

      • Very nice setup you have there :) Certainly not the best money can buy, but still awesome :D

  • Cool, more facebook likes than +s lol

  • +1

i've just tried them. they sound very good for their size.

  • +1

Just an FYI, the A5s are also $50 off now at pccasegear.

    • +1

sweet thanks for the heads up

  • Promotional prices have gone up, they're still cheaper than before, but the A5s and A2s are now at $369 and $219 respectively. And I never got round to buying my set PCCG :'(
