Twins Coming Soon. Best Way to Save?

Gday

My wife is pregnant with identical twin boys. It's our first and hopefully last set of kids. Due October
The buying stuff begins.

Any advice on top tips for prams/car seats/etc?

We have a Mitsubishi Pajero and a Toyota Prius C.

We've been to two baby shops and think the … Expensive iCandy orange is the one for us because both kids can be carried at the same time while still allowing easy access to the storage pouch at the bottom and they're laid out in a row versus side by side, so we will fit though doors. I'm looking to buy it second hand however not many on sale as it's a new model.

Cot wise I'm thinking second hand ones too with a good clean on the mattress or maybe a second hand frame only with a new mattress.

Car baby seats … Grrr! So expensive. Will probably get two to begin while wife of mat leave and then an additional two later. Friends that have kids still need their baby seats. Pajero isofix mounts are stupid as two baby seats allow zero adults on the second row so I'll have to seatbelt them.
I'm thinking no baby capsule seat. Just the reversible front/rear facing 0-4 months ones.

Clothes - I'm hoping from some hand-me-downs from friends and a batch order from AliExpress. Any thoughts on this?

Nappies: shall I go disposable or washable and save the environment?

Any and all advice is welcome.
Cheerio

Nb: I notice the baby stores don't have discounted gift cards or cash back boo.

There s the baby and pregnancy expo coming soon at olypic park in Sydney ( May 2019). Might be a great idea to take a look there as some year there are huge discount on baby stuffs.

    Congratulations to both of you.

    • +1

Top tip! Thanks. I'll look into it. I did not know.

      Yay. Got my free tickets

      • +4

I think if you register beforehand it's free, otherwise a small entry fee on the day,

Try and research all your items before you go or at least on your phone whilst there…don't get pressured by all the salespeople (take your time) …yes there may be discounts, but they are there just there to get you to impulse buy…it's like the Easter show but not…it's full on!

      • +2

Just found the link for free entry (as usually $20 on the day)

        https://www.pbcexpo.com.au/sydney/plan-and-go/tickets/

You can stock up on brand like Avent/pigeons/ mother s nature as it will be some huge discount. Also there are some good baby sale twice a year (usually january/february and June/July ). You will be able to buy car seat and clothes at some really slash prices (don't hesitate to buy and stock up big size as you will see they grow faster than what you thought).take your time when buying things for your twins as you don't need it straightaway so keep an eye on the items you want and you will find it around the price you wish (almost every week There are sale somewhere).

Oh, and keep your partner away from instagram (or you will be. Lot out of pocket )!

        • Nice. I got my free tickets yay. I like the sound of slash prices. I'll be there!

          • +5

@FoxJump: i would temper than excitement but stating the following

            Baby shows

            • its more about information rather than so called bargains these days. There are handy things to learn as first timer so still worthwhile for that side of things

            • there are a lot less freebies now days

            • have not heard of any parents actually winning anything in any of the scans …if you want to participate USE a new email account. something you wont care gets spammed because your going to forget the password to it in a few months time

            • 40%+ off bargains are few and far between

also in the past there was a lot more competition in the baby market

however many have faded away (Babies r us, Boystown, baby bounce, etc) …leaving Baby Bunting with a rather large monopoly in the physical store side of things. so a lot less price slashing these days…(AMAZON/ebay/etc are keeping them in check with runaway monopoly)

            • +1

@humdingaling: I have a second mobile and email just for spam :)
Thanks for the reality update regarding shows

      • +5

I have twins too! Welcome to the twin club.

Tip hat I wish I had known on the expos, if you go on the later days, you'll get more freebies as its the final days and they need to get rid of stuff.

        • Thank you. Nice one.

        • +2

Not baby stuff, but I've cleaned up at final hour or two of expos where staff will sell off for crazy cheap just to avoid lugging stuff back to their cars

          • +2

@TheLurker: As someone who used to support/run conference booths, if my boss doesn't want/need it back at the office it's yours :)

  • Congratulations. It's going to be one hell of a ride but totally worth it:)

Why take it easy when I can take it hard

      • +18

        I have a 7 week-old.
It’s “why take it hard when you can take it in crushing mode”.

Big congrats tho, it’s worth it (most days anyway).
Sleep as much as you both want now, those shows you’ve been meanin to watch, places you’ve been meaning to go, do it. There’s none of that after delivery.

        Now onto some tips.

Prams are regularly 15% or even sometimes 20% off, you have plenty of time to shop so don’t rush. Since you’re not planning to have more it kay be worthwhile to look at second hands.

With car seats, I concur re no 2nd hand seats for safety reasons, I’m sure most 2nd hands are likely to be fine but I’m not risking it for the sake of a couple of hundred bucks, save that by foregoing a weekend trip, or a couple of fancy dinners instead. I paid $36x for a new Britax Graphene (deal from Ozgargain) sp they aint unaffordable.

Use credit cards with price protection to pay for big purchases,

Don’t buy nappies, friend and family will gift you plenty, also when you do need to buy some (i.e. run out), don’t stockpile, as I find my son goes up in size relatively quickly.

Same wih clothes, aim to have 4-5 of the current size (again, only buy closer to delivery just in case you get them as gifts. Again, I find my kid outgrowing them very quickly.

Refrain from buying Aww-so-cute unneccesary fancy clothes for the little ones, I guess it depends, but I find the, unpractical, hard to put on and way too pricy, my kid also barely goes anywhere so that’s practically money down the sink.

On that note (of not going out much), don’t buy capsules until you need them, you may find that you’ll never need them at all. After 6 months your kids’ll need carseats anyway.

There’s no (or minimal) difference between cheap $19 changing pad and $79 ones.

Things you may get gifted (but are cheap enough to just buy when you need and not wait for a sale): nappies, baby wash n shampoos, wraps, changing pad etc.

Will add to this when I remember, congrats again!

        • +1

Thank you. Oh dear. Crushing mode! Well, at least they're not triplets.

I had not considered making sure my cc had the price protection thing. yes. top tip! One of my cc does, but the other not sure - and I should read the PDS first too.

I'm hoping to score a second hand icandy orange. No way i'm paying $2200 new!. Maybe $1000 second hand.
We have been looking at the britax ones .They seem ok. Hopefully they're on discount at the baby show. We'll need 2 to begin with, and later maybe another 2? fml.

I wasn't planning on getting capsules. Those zero to four seats seem flexible enough.

ok, i'll keep my nappy stockpile to fortnightly I guess?
Changing pads, what does that do? Is it like a wireless charging pad?

          • @FoxJump: A changing pad is just a physical barrier you put between the change table/seat/floor and your baby when you are out and about/at the shops.

There are disposable ones and non disposable ones. We have this one: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/portable-change-mat/2127864

Kmart used to sell an almost identical bag to this for $25

            https://www.davidjones.com/kids/nursery/changing-bags/218757…

Can only find this one now: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/stroller-bag/2127309

            • +3

@John Kimble: I see. A mini picnic rug.

              • +2

@FoxJump: Hey Fox, yes as John said, it's basically a cushion pad so that you're not putting bubs straight down on a hard cold table.
We're changing nappies on the bed most of the time so it rarely gets used but you do need it at times.

0-4 seats should be good enough for a while, 6m-8y seats are quite cheap (relatively) so when the time comes, it won't be as expensive.

2nd hand bassinets do the job just fine, I made doubly sure to really wash/clean mine and bought some new waterproof covers.

Haven't needed baby monitors yet so I probably wouldn't buy one until you need one.

You will need a nightlight though, I bought the Taotronics VAVA for $20 (another deal from Ozbargain) and it works great, before that we were getting by with my 18V work torch which did the job but was too bright and requires charging everyday. Seriously the VAVA is very handy.

Read up on milk bottles and teats types to familiarise yourself with the options available, same with breast pumps (wife uses manual one just fine and reckons there's no need for pricy electric ones).

P/s: half asleep so didn't realise my prev comment was full of typos, don't worry, you'll be like that soon!

                • @zonra: Oh so car seats are 0-4 or .6 to 8?
                  I seeeee.

I already have a lifx bulb in the room so I don't think I need a light night.

                  • +1

@FoxJump: Yeah I've seen 6m-8y seats at around $150 a pop quite regularly, there are also 12m-8y and 4y-8y I believe.

Btw, these are the changing pads I was talking about, you use these at home, might be a bit different to what John was linking, got mine for $19 at Kmart or Target.

          • @FoxJump:

I'm hoping to score a second hand icandy orange. No way i'm paying $2200 new!. Maybe $1000 second hand.

Do you really need something this expensive?

I wasn't planning on getting capsules.

If these are going to be your only children don't, waste of money. However if you live in an apartment where it is a difficult walk to the car, and you'll need to travel constantly in the first 3-4 months of life for these guys in the car with only one adult around, absolutely get them because then you can carry them out together and put them on the ground easily without any hassle.

            nappies

Don't stockpile newborn nappies, they'll be out of those quick smart. Stockpile those 3 and 4 size nappies, they stay in those the longest when they get a touch older!

  • +16

Why buy new? THat is what is going to kill you!
Facebook marketplace and Gumtree is your friend.
I fully kitted out nursery with furniture, got the first year of clothing, 3 prams (Bugaboo Cam 3 and two quality steelcraft), 2 car capsules with bases and a tonne of other 'essentials' for under $500 over the course of a few months.

    • +2

I'm avoiding new. As much as I can.
I've been told not to buy second hand car seats because they may have been in an accident.

Pram I'm looking at a second hand iCandy orange. It's a relatively new model so not many second hand yet.

      • Which area do you live, there are a lot of "kids classified" pages on facebook for second hand stuff.

Everyone waved about Bugaboo Donkey Duo for twins, test drive both bugaboo and icandy in store and then go search for second hand.

Coles CUB nappies are same price as Aldi I think it's better, as does the Coles baby wipes 6 packs for $10.

        • I tried bugaboo in the store. It's too wide to fit through the stores bathroom!

I just sent a request to join a bunch of FB groups

          • @FoxJump: We have a hand me down McLaren twin pram and it fits through a standard door. Measure the width of your front door and have that handy when checking out prams. Speaking of prams, you'd also want to check that a double pram fits comfortably in the boot of your cars and leaves some room for groceries etc.

  • +5

Don't be afraid to buy used. Just as an example, I've been trying to sell the pram I bought for $1800 for $450 for weeks now, and it's on good condition mostly. With twins you don't need the best of everything, because to be honest, you'll be buying 2 of most things.

Clothes - hand me downs are really good with twins. I've given away so many clothes that have been worn once or not at all. They grow so fast.

We did cloth nappies with our first, and we managed, but it's not easy. We tried with our twins, but it was just too much. Getting all the clothes washed is hard enough, nappies would have made it impossible for us. Also sometimes you can get discounts on nappies direct from the manufacturer or through multiple birth groups because you have twins.

    • Thanks for the advice with nappies.
And dang! That's an epic discount on the pram. Which one is it?

I foolishly offered someone on gumtree $200 less than what they were asking for theirs which rrps for $1999. But it's still over the $1000.

Sounds like I could have gotten away with $700!

      • It's an UPPAbaby Vista. Not a lot of interest for it on the Gold Coast sadly.

I know other people who are struggling to sell similar stuff. May just be the lower population vs a real City.

        • We saw the uppababy one. It's like an iCandy clone. PM me some details.

          • +1

@FoxJump: If it helps at all, we got an uppababy alta (single) for our first born a few years ago and love it. When the second came along a few weeks ago we grabbed a vista (double) second hand for a few hundred dollars. They're great if you do a lot of walking as the chunky wheels make them smooth and comfortable to push. But probably not so great if you need to pack them up and chuck them in a car quite often. The basket is the mvp. That said I imagine few double strollers pack up small.

We looked at icandy originally but couldn't get over how stupid the name was.

I've also been impressed with city select; a lot of family and friends seem to have them. Reasonably priced and some models fold up small. Worth a look as they're be quite a few available second hand.

            Good luck and congratulations!

        • +1

second hand baby gear is ridiculously cheap everywhere … mainly because people are stupid and dont want their little angel using someone else's cast off's.
Needless to say, the babies certainly wont notice the difference, only thing they might miss is the box it came in, coz they invariably prefer playing with that than the contents inside lol

  • Congrats mate !

    • +9

Thanks. I'll looking forward to not knowing which is which.

I'll have to draw a moustache on one

      • +1

Not a hitler moustache I hope but they do look hilarious.

        • Haha.

      • +1

Just in case, we put nail polish on a big toe of one of our identical twin girls.

  • Big CONGRATULATIONS to you @FoxJump!

Like the others say, there's no need to buy new. In fact when I was pregnant with my son, my mother's first grandchild, she asked me to ask relatives and friends for donation of nappies etc. Her family believe that way the kid will grow- up easy and not precious, tough and all that. It somewhat makes sense because used nappies and shirts are gentle to the skin. True enough, my son is a strong little healthy fella altho my pregnancy sucks!

    • +1

I am expecting some freebies my way from friends - and also my mother! Who passed away but had been keeping stuff from when me and my brothers were babies. Except that's overseas rightnow. But my family overseas can ship it over.

      • +1

Sorry about your mother. But I'm sure she's celebrating for you, and will look after your all from above.

Sounds like you'd get the family heirlooms. Blessings! they're worth a million times more than the stuff people buy and throw out soon after

        • +1

Yep. Quality hand made stuff !

  • +9

    Vasectomy

    • +3

Haha. Yeah the next time it'll probably be triplets eek. So watchout for my next ozbargain post on where to get cheap vasectomies

    • -1

Why? Australia is a large country, we need more people.

  • Check if your local council loans out newborn baby capsules. Buy the cheap high chairs from Ikea that you see at all the cafes. Do not buy bedding from Ikea or anywhere else that uses non standard sizes. You will need to buy way more sheets and mattress protectors than you think possible, buy in bulk.

    • +10

+1 for IKEA highchairs. Have had other ones and nothing beats the ease of cleaning the IKEA ones. And believe me, you'll be doing a LOT of cleaning.

      • +1

Okay. Thanks. IKEA highchairs and … Standard sized bedding and check council for loaners. Thanks. Noted

        • +3

+1 for IKEA Highchairs as well. Once you get one, you'll see them in basic every dining/ restaurant.

      • +1

You might be able to snag some ikea highchairs at council cleanups. I just saw one the street the other day.

      • +1

plus newspaper for under the highchairs. Easier to just pick it up and bin it after the performance.

        • A cheap tarp from BCF etc. works just as good and is useful for other things!

  • +5

Buy 2nd hand stuff. There's a lot that you only need for a few months or not at all.

Think about whether you really need something before buying. Ask yourself how your parents got by and if not having a "1080p bluetooth baby monitor with dynamic sound" really did cause you to become an axe murderer.

My wife used to go out with about 30kg of baby stuff either carried or stored in the car "just in case". I did Mr Mum for 2x 3 months periods and we winged it with one backpack.

I think parents these days worry too much and wrap their kids in too much cotton wool. It doesn't build physical or mental resilience. Sorry, I've gone off topic.

    • Agree with second hand. Babies don't have a preference for new vs second hand and honestly as soon as they use it it'll be covered in poop, pee and vomit pretty quickly anyway!

    • Yeah I said to the wife - no baby monitors. We can walk over and take a look.

Or I can put a walkie-talkie I already have with vox mode in the room with CTS or a webcam with a long USB cable and remote desktop - which I already have.

Thanks for the single backpack target. Mission accepted

      • +1

+1 for backpacks as nappy bags. You need your hands free at all times with twins. Pram caddies are good too to hold your essentials: wet wipes, dummies ,coffee, small toys, phone, keys, coffee …etc

    • +2

      I just reread your post.
Dynamic sound on a baby monitor!? Why oh why! I'd rather a green led and a red led. Green = ok noise or no noise. Red = problem

Throw some machine Learning to distinguish the cries and only tell me when I need to do something.

Hey there's a product idea there! Someone go make it.

      • +1

Red LED is unlikely to wake you up when you fall asleep in front of the TV…

        • This. Audio feedback is vital.

  • +2

Nappies. Show some love to your wife and get a nappy service for the first 6 weeks or so. You just pop them in the provided container and they come and collect them and drop you some clean ones. Best thing we ever did. After that, dealers choice, we used disposables.

    • Interesting! Will research. Thanks

      • No worries. It was fairly cheap from memory.

        • I had a look, one place was a price for the initial loan stock, and then a fee for the service.
How quick do they come after I lodge a request for reinforcements?
is it a matter of lodge-today, they're here tomorrow? Or is it a lodge-today, here next week?

          • @FoxJump: You'll have to ask them. I think they give you enough to keep you going between visits. Just let them know you have twins and they should stock you up accordingly. :)

      • if you choose to use disposable nappy, the best investment is to get nappy bin (e.g. Sangenic). Don't buy the branded refill but buy a generic one from ebay.
For $125, you can get 400m (=40 refill) which is about 50% off the branded one.

        • :O

Didn't know that was a thing. Thanks

        • We bought the ubbi nappy bin. It cost more upfront ($80-100) but uses large kitchen/garbage bags from coles/woolies and holds a lot of dirty nappies. We bought the scented/anti bacterial garbage bags and I think it works out much cheaper in the long run.

        • Ozbargainers use plastic bags that you saved up before they stopped stocking them at the supermarkets. You did stock up right?

Then when they get old enough to make stinky poos, you just toss it in the bag and then take straight to the bin. Cheapest solution.

Even if you have a slick nappy bin, you will still smell those poos. Oh god the smell…

  • +4

Join your local buy nothing group on Facebook. So much kids stuff for free.

I would hold off on some things, my wife bought heaps of crap that we never used. Wait until you actually need something to buy it.

My number 1 parenting tip is, buy a packet of cloth nappies, not to use as nappies but to use a clean up rags for all manner of things.

    • +1

Cleanup rags = all my old t-shirts :)

      • +2

Old t shirts are good, but legit I bought a packet of Terry cloth nappies when my son was born (a 20 pack I think), and we still have a heap of them 10 years on. They have been used to clean up hundreds of spills, vomit, shit, urine etc. They are basically just small towels but there's been plenty of times where I've had to use a dozen of them at once and nothing else would have been as convenient.

        • Wow a dozen at the same time.
          Crikey.

Instead of old tshirts I shall cut up old towels into squares.

        • We got a bunch of hand me downs and they were quite useful!

  • +1

Best thing we ever did was buy second hand. Prams, car seats, cots, bassinet etc. It killed me to see my friends buying $1000 prams that does the exact thing but looks prettier.

    • Noted.
With twins, the prams are already super expensive.

      • actually i found 2nd hand prams for double seater actually goes for a higher discount against retail because the 2nd hand market for them is a lot smaller

was doing research awhile back because 1 and 2 are close enough together that they we could have used a double

        before buying 2-hand though

test the weight - preferably at baby bunting (or your outlet of choice) because no one like a time waster (on 2nd hand market)

if either parent cannot easily lift and stow into car by themselves than, don't bother with that model.

        • Hmm. Thanks

  • +1

We also got a lot more use out of the $20 umbrella pram from Target than the Super-duper $500 unit (1997 money) we bought at the big box baby store.

    • Hmm. At what age does the umbrella pram become usable for kids?

      • I honestly can't remember. My kids are 17 & 21 now.

We did start using it early (before their 1st birthday) as I worked for an airline at the time and flew everywhere on holidays and the umbrella pram was a lot easier to transport.

The 21yos first trip was Sydney-Perth and she was a great traveller (still is).

        • Right I see.
Geez, not much lifespan on the fancy prams then :(

Time to review my offers on some second hand ones - and lower them.

          • @FoxJump: We found the big pram is nicer - bigger wheels to get over bumps, handle at good height (umbrella one is too low) - can stash stuff in big pram basket.

Depending on what age they start walking. Our kid started around 1 year old, but still used it a lot until about 2. Less use now, but still use occasionally, if trying to get somewhere quickly, or long distance.

      • Not applicable to twins to be honest. You need a proper double pram.

The cheapo light weight ones are for use when the kids are like 2 to maybe 5. To be honest, I like to walk fast and have a little storage for daycare trips, supermarkets etc. so even when they get to be 3 & 4 years old you'll still be using the double pram. Cheapo prams are shaky and rubbish if you walk fast and also aren't exactly the most comfy ride for your kid (suspension and also sun protection wise).

  • +1

My advice on pram is City Select baby jogger double pram. From memory we bought it on one of ebay's 20% off sitewides from a US seller + 2 bassinets from babybunting(on special) all up we paid around $750 AUD (inc. shipping) Then we sold the bassinets 1 year later for $75 each on gumtree

    • Are those inline or side-by-side?
Some reviews said their long like a limo and hard to turn.

      • +1

Can confirm that the side by side is a PITA. You are better off getting the one seat above the other type arrangements. The side by side ones are fine if you live in the country and have big footpaths and not a lot of nooks and crannys you need to fit in. In the inner city though they are a nightmare to get around and fit in.

Although saying that the Baby Jogger City mini GT prams are THE pram if you have just one kid. So light and easy to assemble/dissemble.

  • Also if they go with formula's, Aptamil has a program for twins where they sell formulas for 40 to 50 per cent off on their website (minimum order is 12). You need a ceritificate from their doctor though.

    • Fascinating!
What does the dr cert have to say?

    • Yep we used this too. Saved us heaps and meant we didn't need to fight the Chinese resellers to get the specifuc formula we needed at the shops.

    • after using Aptamil for an year we switched to aldi for 35% of thier price. Not noticed any issues with aldi brand one's so far.

      • I see.

    • yes, this is a great one. i have twin boys and have the discounted formula delivered to my home monthly.

to join the Nutricia Multiple Birth Club, u need a letter from doctor stating twins name, DOB, and that they are being formula fed, signed by doc (i think we supplied birth certificates, cant remember exactly).

edit. Congrats by the way !!!

Nappies - Keep an eye on amazon, I've seen boxes of huggies ultimate (216 nappies) go as low as $30.

As other have said, second hand, especially for under 1 year because they grow so quickly. Half our 'going out' outfits were use once or twice and they already grew out.

Wait til you need it before you buy it, advice will vary because every kid and every parent is different. Below is my experience.

Monitor - super useful, especially if you want to get to them and put them back to sleep before the fully wake up.
Cot - Useless but that's because we found it easier to co sleep. Ended up being a clothes rack of sorts.
Change table - useless because you can change them anywhere, on the bed, on the floor, on the couch. Just have a change mat handy.
Porta cot - useless because they can sleep anywhere, ended up being a ball pit.
Baby carrier - depends on the baby, they may or may not like it. Son hated it, daughter loved it.

We will get rid of most of the stuff on fb/gumtree mostly unused because of the above reasons so you find mostly new stuff pretty cheap.

    • Wow Amazon nappies!
I would not have thought of that!
