If anyone still hasn’t picked this one up I strongly recommend the GOTY version.

The expansions are amazing especially heart of stone

    • How about someone who already owns the base and has been debating on whether or not they should purchase the Expansion Packs or GOTY?

Beyond the price difference, is there any graphical or bug improvements choosing the latter?

      • No but there's an entirely new campaign in it that rivals the size of the base game.

      • Nope. It's probably about the same price as purchasing the expansions individually though, isn't it?
The exp's are worth a run, if you're like me and just weren't ready for the game to be over. You also get a good chunk more story and some lovely cutscenes. Hard to imagine anyone being disappointed.

It's either $23.69 for GOTY, or otherwise I upgrade my base with the Expansion Pass, which is $14.35… A little under $10 in difference.

If you guys are saying there's no improvements to the GOTY compared to base + expansions, I might as well just get the expansions!

      • I know on ps4 (which I have) the save files are not compatible between base game and GOTY edition.
So you lose progress if you get GOTY edition.

Might want to check if steam is the same.

Interesting, I thought blood and wine was better than hearts of stone.

  • The best Nvidia game giveaway (GTX9xx era).

I want to play this eventually, but I always think I should play 1 & 2 first, and then the vastness of it means I end up deciding to do something else.

    • +2

Its been on my perpetual 'to play' list for years…

    • +5

nah just skip 1/2 (1 is too dated) (2 is not that important or good as 3 IMO)

3 is jus tawesome, dont need to play the others. As nike would say, just do it.

      • +2

I disagree. One is way too dated but two is definitely worth a play through. It gives a lot of backstory and introduces you to the world

        • Not really required though. Played through 3 only perfectly fine. Absolutely fantastic game.

    • Yes the clues are actually related, but in the 3rd title almost every ex character's story has been summarised either within individuals portrait or NPCs interactions and dialogues.you won't be worrying to get any hardship understanding their relationships and what was going on before Wolf met the person.

    • +1

It's not required, however, they're both good games that you should give a try anyway. Most people who played TW3 hadn't played the first two games until they bought this.

I always hear rave reviews, think about buying it, watch a video, and then see that most of the female characters are half naked (at best).

It’s a shame they went for such a misogynist aesthetic. A bit of “fan service” is fine, but the gameplay videos for this just make me squirm.

I don’t want to be buying games that give me the urge to alt-tab when my wife or kids walk in the room.

It’s a shame. I’m a fan of CRPGs, and this is, by all accounts, a good one.

      • +5

From what I remember, the female characters are fully dressed most of the time.
(Two outfit options available - Standard is travel gear, while the "Alternative Look" option is more finery/dressed-up)

There are only a few cutscenes with nudity - & in most of those it's equal opportunity nudity!
        (i.e. Geralt is also undressed)

I would argue that this game has the strongest cast of female characters in any game I've ever played.
They are all both independent & extremely capable (but all while retaining their femininity)

        • +1

It sounds like the YouTube videos may not be representative of the game as a whole. I’ll give it a shot… at this price, it’s a no-brainer.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yep.. you won't regret it!
Definitely one of the greatest games of all time (so far) - especially for fans of CRPGs.

The books are worth reading too.

The women are actually very well written and all have their strengths and flaws much like the main character. The secondary character you play as also happens to be a woman and her journey is an incredible experience. Geralt gets naked as much as the women do. It's quite similar to how game of thrones explores most of the characters sex lives and sexuality etc. while also taking you through a great story.

This game is based on a very fleshed out book series so if the games were to take a one dimensional approach to women it would be tarnishing the source material.

I would definitely recommend everyone to buy the GOTY. I personally enjoyed BaW more than the base game. 50 hours of great content for $5 extra is really a no-brainer in my eyes but everyone is different. I enjoyed Witcher 2 a lot too. That's also a great deal for $4. Also the new thronebreaker game is at it's historic lowest of A$ 30.33 which I haven't played but seems to have decent reviews.
This game is not for everyone, but games don't just amass a huge fanbase and get astonishing reviews for no reason, so I'd highly recommend anyone to buy GOTY regardless of what price it is.

Should I wait another couple of years when it gets cheaper or buy it now even if I have a huge backlog of games I still haven't played.

    • buy it now and put it near the top of the list, I have been seeing it hit this price point time and time again and considering how well it is reviewed etc and the amount of content, even at $24 it is def bang for buck IMO

Greatest Game of all time in my book.

Excellent Gameplay with a deep, moving & complex story
    Highly Recommended.

this is a bad price. i got game of the year for $20 back in 2017 september, a physical copy. should be $5 for digital by now. steam is disappointing.

    • +1

I also got GOTY for $20 last year. It's still a good price for a great game with 100+ hours of gameplay. You won't get much cheaper without waiting a long time.

      • Is $20 in USD or AUD? Can't seem to find AUD20 for GOTY in OzBargain search. Trying to gauge if I should hold out for a lower price. This game price is holding up very well compared to others games if the same vintage

  • Bought Witcher 2 4yrs ago. Never played. Ergh, work life balance is broken!

  • I'd recommend buying Witcher series on GOG because you get to keep a digital copy of the game that you can install on any PC, GOG belongs to CDPR so the developer probably will get a better cut of the profit than Steam sale, and I saw similar price on GOG in its January sale. You probably can even get some extra credit in your GOG wallet to purchase some other games.
