Cat6 Ethernet Gigabit LAN Cable Flat 1 Meter $2.80 @ Daiso

1006

I needed a couple of LAN cables so checked Officeworks on the Interwebs, cheapest Cat 6 is $5.88.

On the way there I had cause to stop at the local Westfield and on the off-chance thought I'd have a look in the Daiso store.

As per the title, they sell flat 'fabric braided' 1 metre Cat 6 LAN cables for $2.80.

Not on 'special' but still an absolute bargain that I thought good to keep in mind.

            • @Tuftsdude: I bet JV was the reason Ripsnorter is in it….hah…

              • @Zachary: More likely, the reason was something they did…

                • @jv: Oh, what did they do? I went snooping a bit and saw their last comments were censored and you were in it too, what did they say? Did you get offended and reported them to the mods? Heh…

                  • @Zachary:

                    Did you get offended

                    lol… did you?

                    what did they do?

that's usually the reason why people get binned… How long have you been out?

                    • @jv:

                      lol… did you?

                      I asked you first….

that's usually the reason why people get binned… How long have you been out?

                      Not long actually….

    • Sure do. Mine runs from router to Steam link at the TV.

    • They refunded my $0 money and cancelled my order.

    • Yep, mine is still unopened. Don't know what to do with it

  • +1
  • The braid on the cable makes it looks like it's really high quality lol

  • If it's a flat cable, then it's NOT built to Cat6 specs - though you may not notice on a short 1m length.

STP = shielded TWISTED pair. I can guarantee that the pairs aren't twisted, so there'd be a heap of crosstalk between channels that may or may not show up as speed fluctuations.

    • +3

I call BS. There is nothing in any of the Cat6 specifications that says you cannot have a flat cable. There are three different standardisation bodies, the ISO, the European, and the American, and each has its own definition of Cat 6. Many Ethernet cables, both round and flat, Cat 6 or Cat 5, fail to meet the certification claimed. Shielding is not part of the Cat6 specification, so why do you spend over half your neg comment on something completely irrelevant?

      • +5

There is nothing in any of the Cat6 specifications

But the TIA specification does have strict requirements for propagation delay, attenuation, cross-talk, and interference. And there's no way the cheap-as-junk AWG 32 in a flat cable is going to meet any of those specs.

Any decent quality Cat6 cable will use at least 24AWG and they should be using 23AWG. A Cat6A cable must also have shielding. And don't get me started on this new "thin" 28AWG cables all the cablers are trying to pass off as "good enough".

        • +3

As I mentioned, and you disregarded, there are three competing standardisation bodies, TIA being the most stringent. But why would you even bother with any of these? No certification body is printed on the cable. Thus it is Cat6 according to the manufacturer, not a certification body. Cat6 is not a reserved term. All uncertified Cat6 are likely to fail to meet TIA standards.

On the one hand, this is a one meter cable. You mentioned yourself that "you may not notice on a short 1m length". On the other hand, your neg was based on irrelevant thought bubbles. There are flat cables that are TIA certified, just as there are round cables that are not.

      • "Cat6 wiring can support up to 10 Gbps and frequencies of up to 250 MHz. While Cat5e cable features 1.5-2 twists per cm, Cat6 cables are more tightly wound and feature 2 or more twists per cm."

    • What made u think these are STP? I dont think anyone will bother to manufacture nor purchase a $2.8 STP cable. They are clearly UTP.

  • +13

These "flat" LAN cables are absolutely atrocious. There's a reason you'll (hopefully) never see one in a datacentre. Although the wires are twisted into pairs the pairs themselves are not twisted. Also there is minimal or even zero shielding. They're utter dogsh*t.

They might negotiate gigabit but that's because most (if not all) NICs just look for link on all four pairs. Put a TIA tester on them and you'll see it dropping packets, interference, cross-talk.

You may or may not get 1Gbps transfers in a residential setting, especially with short runs (e.g. under 10m including both patch leads), but there will be packet loss and retransmits. If I saw this cable in a datacentre I'd chop both ends off and dispose in the bin.

Waste of money even at $1.

you'll see it dropping packets, interference, cross-talk.

How else will the Chinese government sniff out your data ?

      • +7

I'll send them my private RSA keys if they promise to stop producing and exporting this rubbish.

    • +1

I'm getting full 10GBps over a 3m flat cable between a pair of HPE 530Ts. I assume since the individual pairs are still twisted it's fine for short runs.

      • +7

For 3m you could probably use speaker cable or a coat hanger.

        • +10

Save your neg for longer cables then, there's nothing wrong with this.

          • +3

@Austere: I negged it because it’s not on special, not discounted, and even at $1 would not be a bargain. This is a 20c cable. Paying $2.80 for a 20c cable is not a bargain.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: Good to see you corrected your comment 👍

              • -1

@Austere: What did I correct? And who downvoted me for explaining my neg, that's poor form.

    • +2

For 1 meter you'll almost surely get Gigabit speed, or even 10GBe, on literally any cable with an okay connection on all 4 pairs.
Problems only tend to show up when running a longer cable.

    • Use them and they work just fine.

  • +3

Spend hundreds or thousands on computer and entertainment equipment then go for a cheap, unknown flat cable at the lowest possible price from a Chinese novelty store. What could go wrong?

    • +4

      Nothing.

    • +4

Sounds like a Monster cable advertisement :P

      • +1

There's a difference between spending $200 on cables that aren't better than $10 cables because you believe nonsense advertising that doesn't make any technical sense, and buying $3 cables instead of the $10 ones and wondering why you see dropouts and the cable lasts a week before the connector falls off.

        • Nothing wrong with these $2.86 1m cables, in fact, they are as good as, probably better than any cable I've purchased in the past ~25 years

  • +3

They are copper clad aluminium cables id give them a wide wide birth unless you want big problems

    https://www.showmecables.com/blog/post/copper-clad-aluminum-…

    • How do you know these Daiso ones are CCA? Can't see that on the packaging. Only can see "flexible, durable, break resistant". Would hope this description also implies it's not CCA

If this is indeed CCA then I retract everything I said before…. CCA is one step too low to be sold anywhere in any circumstances.

      • Because I was stupid enough to buy bunch once they are cca 100%

  • Thanks OP!
Good bargain for a couple extra cables to have on hand.

  • Based on the title, I thought it was some kind of measuring device. Someone needs to correct the spelling.

    Can't go wrong with 4Cabling…

    • +2

Except the price IMHO, $4.95 for a 1m blue Cat6 cable, get your cables from FS.com as they have a local Melbourne warehouse these days with next day delivery, near half the price, see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7148000/redir

      • 4Cabling's Alexandria NSW office is very convenient if you are doing work at the Equinix colo literally across the street.

        • True, they have also opened a shop just near me, I was like a kid in a lolly shop on my first visit, then I saw the prices.

But yeah, if you're in a bind at a DC and a 4C is just around the corner then thats a huge plus.

    • +1

You see how much they sell ubiquiti products for? Here is an example… the unifi g3 camera sells for about $215 at most shops. 4cabling sell it for $319.

  • +2

    1m cables at Bunnings $4

    • +2

      $2.8<$4 no?

      • $4 < DNS lookup failed

  • +2

Not a bargain. Can get 1.6M Cat6 from Aliexpress for under $2.

    • +1

Not sure why you were negged on that comment. These cables are certainly no better than what you will get on Aliexpress and definitely significantly more expensive, would not surprise me if that is where they restock from.

      • +1

People are probably sick of the "cheaper from Aliexpress" comments on every 2nd deal.

Most people are happy to pay a slight premium to get a product quicker than 4 weeks.

        • So basically a premium price on aliexpress quality cables to get the fast delivery :-)

        • +1

Or a quality product for an extra $0.06 albeit you have to pay for and wait for delivery via their Melbourne warehouse

      • +1

I begged because this isn’t a bargain. The aliexpress cables are no better but you don’t see me posting a deal for them.

        • I begged because this isn’t a bargain.

          No need to beg.

It is obvious it isn't a bargain. Only 3% of people reading the post are upvoting…

      • Massive difference between local stock and Chinese stock. Cheaper does not mean quicker.

  • +2

It is glorious to see jv in full flight

  • +1

A whole lot of misconceptions on here about what qualifies something as Cat6 or 6A, and more importantly within Australia, the regulatory requirement of products used within a network. $2 products will not meet either the performance or legal requirements. An every day consumer, someone who does not work in the structured cabling industry, would not know about this.
    Have a look: https://www.commsalliance.com.au/Publications/all/Standards/…

S008 is about the material, and currently AS/NZS 3080 is the performance standard. Soon to be updated to AS/NZS 11801-1.

  • When should I buy UTP (Unshielded) cables vs Shielded?

    • Never.

  • What ozbargainer doesn't make their own cables?

  • Any suggestions where should I get around 16 metres of cable to connect the TV to the cable modem?

  • Very cheap, and I'm pretty sure they are made in China
