  • Seen the post on price hipster. Product review very bad, didn’t use though.

    • its an average performer . for the price point its a OK pick

google map is much much better in all aspects:algorithm,GUI,intelligence, functionality …. most areas have wifi/3G/4G cover though google has offline map. Also free Here map is good in offline navigation since Nokia age. So why such GPS devices still existing?

Same arguments you would have with e-reader over tablet.
They are single purpose device that preform better than their counter part for long term use.

    • Because google gets all your data for free with gmaps.

      • hard to avoid in current age sadly, all your daily generated data are controlled by those big companies.

        • Not apple.

Fyi i don't have any apple products

Unlike Google many other tech companies they have not built a business data collection

          • @Sozin: do you know there is thing called server? Each big IT company like Apple, Google has its own physical server somewhere. no difference in my mind. server just there, access just in their hand. depends on if they wish to do that. all companies declare a lot for the privacy, but who knows what's the actual truth.

Many reasons. Some people don't want to use their phone with a smaller screen so they use a dedicated GPS. My phone also got very hot when using it as a GPS plus there are more options on the Navman than google maps. Each to their own I say.

    • Only fully licensed drivers can use their phones for GPS. All learners and P platers have to use a dedicated GPS unit if they want electronic maps.

    • Google has great up-to-date location info, but their software's features are terrible compared to a GPS. No speed limits, no lane guidance, nothing. Every time I'm forced to fall back to it it infuriates me how they can't manage to fix this.

I used to work at JB and the amount of Navman units that would come back faulty was really high. Same with Fitbits. So many fitbits come back faulty - sure, we just swap it for a new one for you, but some customers had gone through over 4 of the same model! I don't blame the customers, either, as there were just so many different customers all with the same problems, it was definitely dodgy manufacturing. Anyway, Navman are the fitbit of GPS units. If you buy a GPS, the last thing you want is it playing up and misbehaving when you're trying to navigate an unfamiliar area, or dying in the middle of a road trip. When I bought a GPS I splashed out and went Garmin - it's not perfect, but I wouldn't go without it.

Also if you use a dashcam, or a gps with inbuilt dashcam, cheap microsds are susceptible to dying from the heat of Australian sun. I bought a Sandisk 'High Endurance' microsd card, and so far it's been going strong for about 15 months - I leave my gps/dashcam on the windscreen 24/7 and both the garmin unit and the sandisk high endurance microsd have performed really well.

Anyways, just my personal anecdotes, might help someone out there in the market.

    • which dashcam are you using?

      • Sorry for not responding. Garmin DriveAssist 51LT off the top of my head; it's a 2in1 unit.

Note. This is the old model. The latest model is the Navman MY580LMT 5" GPS Unit $79.20. Only $2.88 more. Normally $99. Both are JB exclusive models.

    • Do you know if there are any key differences? I couldnt see any?

      • +1

The key difference would be the end date of the "lifetime" the unit is warranted to get free updates for. Some imagine it is the life of the device, the manufacturer provides then for the "commercial" life of the device. I have one navman and a garmin in perfect working order that cannot be updated…

  • Does NavMan have any decent smartphone style touchscreens yet? I used to really enjoy the NavMan software but I changed to a Garmin years back with a proper screen and voice control. NavMan had better speed alerts and lets you skip waypoints though.
