      What about Auckland? With Jetstar, the flight from Mel to Christchurch is 310; for the same dates, the flight from Syd is 364? The same story with Qantas. Also flights from Sydney to North America are more expensive. I don't think it is the result of distance.

    I think the Sydney Aiport charges more for the planes to land and take off as there is only 1 airport vs Melbourne's 2. This is usually why Melbourne is $20-30 cheaper

    Not only this case, flights from Mel to North America, Asia, Europe are also cheaper.

    The Air NZ flights are direct to BsAs from Auckland.
    The LATAM flights are via Santiago

  From what I can see - at least for Sydney flights - there is no stopover at Santiago, only 1 stop at Auckland:
