Dont do it. Extremely poor communication if things go wrong i.e. cancellations or issues like lost luggage. Turkish Airlines are a nightmare to deal with.

    • -3

Yes, they started off with a lot of promise, but lots of online reviews suggest to avoid

      • +3

Yes got sucked in unfortunately. They claim to be a 'world class airline' yet leave you on the other side of the world with no options to return and then lose a whole planes luggage. World class…. 👏

        • +4

They claim to be a 'world class airline'

I think that was a translation error by their marketing dep. Should read: 'worst class airline'

@jv: To those same people obsessed with bashing anything Turkish. thread after thread, your act is sooo painfully predictable. Same digs, same stereotypes, same cheering fan club with the same agenda.

Your threads are a circus of biases and you parade your prejudice like it’s talent.

It’s obvious, embarrassing, and utterly ridiculous.

The selected few who I can’t name is on show every time.
            Its so predictable, and embarrassing.

Seriously, Let your hate or bigotry rest. Life’s too short.

@Timetraveler: Maybe they should return Cyprus to the Cypriots?

I bet you support Russia invading Ukraine too.

              • +3

@jv: Tagged you, and, as predictable as ever, you jumped on the Cyprus line lol, proving my point before I even finish typing. Greece conquered Persia, Egypt, and India under Alexander, invaded Anatolia. Britain stole continents, drained India, France brutalised Algeria, Spain wiped out civilizations across South America, Portugal carved empires across Africa and Asia. Empires built themselves through force, that’s history, deal with it.
Oh, did I forget to mention Britain colonised Australia and New Zealand, drained India?

And yet, thread after thread, your obsession is laser focused only on Turkey. Hmmm.
Greece? Silent. Western empires? Silent. Turkey alone triggers your snarky, sarcastic keyboard crusade. Years of sarcastic digs at anything Turkish, and now “You” lecture me on morality? Every post proves exactly what I said, biased, predictable, and absurd.

Until you treat every empire equally, your crusade is nothing but trolling in full display, and it’s painfully obvious you thrive on being a keyboard nuisance.

Well you also forgot something very important. Be careful if you are visiting Cyprus via Turkish Airlines because it lands at Ercan Airport which it's on the occupied side of Cyprus. Also Interpol has no jurisdiction. It's a criminals haven.

The Republic of Cyprus and the international community (including Australia) do not recognize Ercan Airport as a legal point of entry to the Republic of Cyprus. The airport is located in the northern part of the island, controlled by Turkish Cypriots and recognized only by Turkey.

The Republic of Cyprus considers using Ercan Airport as an illegal entry into Cyprus. As a result, travelers who enter through Ercan can face difficulties or refusal of entry to areas under the control of the Republic of Cyprus.

        • it lands at Ercan Airport which it's on the occupied side of Cyprus

            @jv: According to AI:

The original number of missing persons after Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus was about 1,500 Greek Cypriots, as well as several hundred Turkish Cypriots. Over the decades, efforts have continued to identify remains and provide closure to families. According to the most recent data from 2025:

The official overall number of missing persons in Cyprus from the 1963-64 and 1974 events is 2,002: 1,510 Greek Cypriots and 492 Turkish Cypriots.

As of January 2025, 1,051 missing individuals have been identified, including both Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Approximately 754 Greek Cypriots and 197 Turkish Cypriots remain unaccounted for, totaling around 950 still missing in 2025.

So, while the number of missing was about 1,500 initially, as of 2025, the number of those still missing is just under 1,000—roughly half of the original figure. The humanitarian search for the remaining missing persons is still ongoing, with active excavations and investigations under the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus

On the contrary, flew Turkish Airlines from Denpasar to New York with a heavily discounted J fare - flight got cancelled around 12 hours prior to departure out of DPS - within an hour I was emailed of the cancellation and was informed of a new pending flight itinerary within 3 hours. 10 minutes later got a new e-ticket with Singapore Airlines still in J from SIN-DPS-EWR.

      • +4

        Lucky you!

      • +7

So you never actually flew Turkish airlines?

        • +4

I have between Melbourne and Singapore, very good service and overall a solid carrier - only have flown Business with them though

          • @AircraftFreight: You mean you flew on a Turkish ticket in an aircraft operated by Singapore Airlines? That's not the same as 'flying Turkish Airlines' Singapore is a world class airline as opposed to Turkish.

        • I lol'ed.

    • Turkish Airlines are a nightmare to deal with.

Sounds like they're not sweet like Turkish Delight?

      • Dusty like a Persian rug

    • +9

Disagree. Flew them recently to Istanbul and onwards to Oslo. On the way back flew from Belgium via Istanbul onwards to Sydney.

Flights were great, food was decent. On our return to Sydney, one oversized piece of luggage didn't make it through - but they were good with comms and had it delivered via courier in the next few days.

      I'd definitely fly them again.

    • +6

All airlines are like this. We have had Singapore Air delay us for 40 hours. And we had business class tickets.

      • +1

I beg to differ. Etihad cancelled my mom's flight in Europe a few hours before her flight to Sydney, she went to the airport like nothing happened, lined up at the checkin counter and they rebooked her to the next Lufthansa flight leaving the very same morning on the spot. They also paid 600 euros for compensation without disputing anything, because Europe has a 3+ hours delay compensation policy. Etihad once lost my luggage also in Europe and they sent it after me even to a different country within a day. Excellent customer service is out there, even Qantas is pretty decent from that perspective I think, but you won't find it at Turkish.

    • +4

100% agree. I had to take them to small claims court in NSW because their delayed flight left me stranded overnight in Sydney. No support, no help, had to rebook my on hotel and next day flight. I was in business too - they dgaf and tried to blame everyone else, even when I had documented flight times and delays. Straight up lied.

Also the stopover in Singapore/KL is such a pain - you leave the plane, go straight back into the waiting lounge, then reboard.

Take them as a last resort only.

      • +2

Did the small claims court case succeed? Or did Turkish Air just thumb their nose at the court?

        • About 2 weeks after my NCAT claim, there was a sudden email saying my request for a refund was approved (even though originally they said it was rejected because they were right and everyone was wrong).

I'd say they'd start to be in big trouble if they started ignoring claim cases - but I'm no lawyer so I don't know. I closed the case before it went to 'court' once their claim came through.

      • -1

I also almost escalated my case because after a few ignored emails, they finally ackowledged their fault, but they didn't want to pay, they said I have to show up at their office with a booked appointment. After 9 months of back and forth emailing, it looks like they'll finally transfer my well deserved refund to my bank account.

Honestly, they're trying to market themselves as a tier 1 when in reality they're barely a tier 3.

Have a flight booked with them in September, not looking forward to it. Star Alliance really needs to turf them and get a replacement
    Customer service is abysmal.

    • +2

Tier 3 is true, but their marketing is very very good and so people are surprised at how bad my experiences have been with them.

    • +2

Ive flown with them many times and had zero issues, their customer service honestly isnt that bad. If you spend more go with qatar airlines, otherwise if you want to save money go with turkish. Individuals having issues with them doesnt automatically mean every experience with them will be bad. I'd say its a tier 2. Tier 1 would be qatar airlines for me.

    • +2

I agree, their service on the ground and in the air is literally budget airline level. If you're happy with that kind of treatment then go ahead and fly with them.

  • +10

Thanks OP, wanted to go over personally to Turkey to sort out my Turkish Netflix subscription, cheers

Flew with them across Europe and was impressed with the plane quality and service quality on board.

Hard to see them being that appealing for Aussies though until MEL/SYD -> IST direct flights launch in 2026

    • -5

I still wouldn't fly them even if they gave free first class tickets. I have my reasons.

Turkish Airlines Vs. China Southern? Both have fares around $1K to europe

    • -4

some, like me, might not care, but go via China Southern and give away all your personal details including fingerprints of all 10 fingers to China in transit in Guangzhou

      • +1

well, US also demands all 10 fingerprints before they let you in, so, they're just as bad as Chinese in terms of privacy

      • -1

Uh, India does the same, US does the same, i'm sure others do as well.

    • +1

I have not flown with Turkish but can tell you China Southern (and Eastern) are really good for what you pay. Not exactly Singapore, Emirates or Cathay but just below those. I am talking about the hard product. I haven’t needed to deal when issues like long delays or cancellations.

    • +2

Turkish is way better, especially if you value in flight meals and good cabin crew.

      • -2

Yep, Can confirm. Its way better than china airlines.

  • +1

Anyone knows how or where to apply the promo code? it says on the payment page, but I can't find that option

    • +3

On the payment page, select credit card and you'll see a promotional code selection button.

      • Got it. Thank you

  • +1

Less than half of my ticket is the "base fare" component. Meaning that the effective price reduction will be 20% of ~50%.

    • +4

Not even that good - my $1687 came down to $1602 - only 5% cheaper.

Then you can pay around $400 for standard seat selection because TK is not free after online check in like most other full service airlines are.

I'd call it an instant bull deal.

Not sure what everyone is whinging about in the comments section? It's never a good experience with any airline (including SQ and QF) when bags get lost or damaged etc.

I've flown Turkish Airlines, food was great, flight on time, hospitable cabin crew, well maintained aircraft and they didn't lose my bags. At worst, this mob is leagues ahead of the budget airlines (i.e. Chinese and legit budget like Scoot) that fly to Europe from Australia.

    Book in confidence.

    • +1

Did you get Turkish food (i.e. Pide) on the flight?

    • +4

The airline is fine.. until you have an issue. Then they are worse that Scoot in dealing with issues.

    • +1

Sounds like you flew with them what once? Or twice? And had a good experience
I never flew with them but i am going to take all reviews both positive or negative seriously. No need to pretend like you are the guru of airline reviewers and dismiss others who actually had bad experiences.

      • +4

Ive flown with them about 3 times over past few years all long distance. Ive had zero issues. As a precaution i just put airtags in my luggage (as i do with every flight i take) but ive never had an issue. The food is pretty good imo.

      • +2

I'm curious to know how your two overworked brain cells deduced from my comment that I flew with them once or twice?

        • +1

“I’ve flown turkish airlines” vs “i’ve flown turkish airlines a few times or i fly turkish airlines all the time”
“Food was great” vs “food has been great everytime”
“They didn’t lose my bags” vs “they never lost my bags”
You’re lucky the plural of aircraft is still aircraft

I don’t know but it sounded like once. That is why i asked.

  • +2

One of the worst company to deal with. Terrible communication, rude staff. Not worth the hassle.

  • +1

The worst airlines I have ever flown with! Avoid them at all costs!

  • +4

Just like any airline, when things are ok, it's fine.

When things go wrong, you will always remember it and it just takes a few of those to reflect on comments/reviews. Far more likely for people to complain than say 'It was fine'.

I've been lucky to catch over 300 flights in my lifetime and can comfortable say no airline is 'the best'.

Always look for the cheapest possible on the shortest route. It's worked out for me. What you pay is what you get and going in with that mentality will help with your outlook.

    • +1

I've been lucky to catch over 300 flights in my lifetime

      Definitely living the dream mate

    • +3

Seemingly all ozbargain mentality goes out the window when it comes to flights, all of sudden saving and the cheapest price doesn't matter and we now care about 'customer service' that most people will never need to utilise, safety records that have no actual probable effect, 'star ratings' of airlines that are usually paid for by airline to industry groups, and so on. Yeah sure go ahead and pay an extra $300 or $500+ per person for your flight vs flying someone else that will get you there anyhow.

Reasons to spend more boil down to:
      - times (when you need to get to your destination + layover issues if any)
      - when the lower cost option ends up costing more after any add ons you need
      - when frequent flyer tangible benefits outweigh the cheaper option (e.g. $ value of points earned, utility of lounge access, added baggage)

    • +3

Yet everytime a Turkish airline post goes up the comments are flooded with negative experiences. Sure most people will get to their destination with no issues but it seems like when there are problems on Turkish they don't seem to care. Flying with them was literally one of the worst customer experiences I have ever had, and I usually go overseas twice a year. I can tolerate poor service but their service is down right disrespectful.

  • +6

I flew Turkish in April this year in J class Cairo - Istanbul - Jakarta and they were great. Ontime, great food, awesome crew, Touristanbul layover was fantastic. I'd certainly fly them again :)

  • +3

I had 0 problems with Turkish airlines, were they late once in a while? Yea, so were the others. I mean ozbargain flies Jetstar and Air Asia. My only beef with these guys are charter flights, for example from KL. Terrible food, service and the plane needed massive reno. I know MA are going through a rough patch and that’s why I don’t fly with them atm, why sell it to me as if it’s run by you (which they do in SG afaik)

  • +4

Have flown with them a couple of times. Last time one of my flights was delayed causing me to miss a connection that was separately ticketed. I expected nothing but walked up to their counter at ist and within about 10 minutes they had me booked into a flight to my final destination in business, free of charge, as compensation for the delay and missing the connection.

Might be some bad experiences but the sooner if it, but my only experience was absolutely stellar.
