This is the V10 Absolute, the Costco one is for the V10 Absolute+ (plus) - they are different:

"The main difference between them is the bin volume - the V10 Absolute+'s is 220ml bigger than that of the V10 Absolute.
The plus version also has three more accessories - an extension hose, a flexi-crevice tool and a tool bag."

This is also a grey import vs local - so potential warranty issues. IMO not a bargain.

I won’t debate but it’s worth knowing - the Absolute international version has the considerably better torque drive carpet vacuum head.

This means the battery drives the propulsion of the brush roller heads that agitate carpet, rather than the Australian Absolute+ In which the rollers move based on the user pushing the brush head forward. The torque drive therefore picks up a considerable deal more dust and dirt from carpets.

A flexible crevice tool, a bag and extension hose are useful but the two brushes you’ll use the most are hard floor and carpet head.

On bin size it helps absolutely (pardon the pun) but the real difference is negligible due to the fact the battery on highest setting is something akin to 10mins (don’t quote me). It means you’ll make 2 trips to empty the bin instead of 4 trips.

I didn't know that about the torque drive, thanks for that :)

Agreed on the extra heads, but they do come in handy - e.g. cleaning your car but you can obviously make do with the standard ones.

I've got carpets, so the bigged bin size is definitely a plus (pardon the pun). I've got the V10 animal and it cleans my whole house before running out of charge - many trips to the bin.

The Aus Absolute Plus's direct drive vacuum head also uses a battery-powered motor to drive the brushes like the international version. The difference is the rated power of the motor in the heads. The Direct Drive is rated at 50W, while the Torque Drive is potentially more powerful as it draws 100W.

Just checked Dyson UK's website. Their V10 Absolute also comes with the Direct Drive head. I can't find a V10 Absolute that comes with the Torque Drive head. Torque drive was released with the V11.

Genuine question - are these vacuums ~25x better than your stock standard ones from Kmart? I've been thinking about buying one but can't quite get my head around this fact. I acknowledge they are more convenient but this does not seem worth 25x.

    • Are you talking about the $29 "2 in 1 Corded Stick Vacuum"? The cheapest 'cordless' stick vacuum is $99. That's going to be your closest comparison to Dyson's cordless stick vacuum. You can also currently buy a Dyson V6 Slim Cordless Vacuum on ebay right now for $269 (which on paper seems somewhat close the the kmart $99 one).

So basically, if you look at their range, you have incremental improvements through the range. Where you land on depends on what you value and on your budget. You will get a real difference when you compare the bottom of the range to the top of the range, but at the end of the day that difference has to suit your needs.

I.e if you live in a small apartment and are quite regular with your cleaning, then you'll probably do just fine with the $99 kmart one. However, if you live in a large apartment/house and have messy kids/pets then you might get frustrated with the $99 kmart one (I have no experience with it, I just glimpsed the specs).

      • Yes that is the one - unfair on my part to compare corded to uncorded but I guess that is part of the problem as someone who has always used a corded vacuum (which has its failings) and never experienced using a cordless one. It would be great to hear the experiences of those who have converted and if they got value out of it!

        • Just got your message. Our family used one of the older types of the stick and bag/ball things that follow you around (corded). IMO they're bulky to use and inconvenient for small messes. We would just get the dustpan and clean up small messes and leave the corded vac for the big house cleans.

We later bought a Makita cordless vacuum and it was great with the convenience but not so good on suction. Then we moved over to the Dyson V10 animal about a year ago and haven't looked back. It's just about as good as the corded vacuum in terms of suction and the battery life is great, we have no issues with needing to recharge for a full house clean. Also the additional heads and accessories are great and we tend to use them all.

Another annoyance with corded vacuums is that our cars are parked in a driveway not a garage, so it's always been annoying to bring out the extension cords to clean the cars routinely. Not an issue with cordless.

On the stock standard ones you were referencing, my mate owns one. He's never uses it, it may be because it's bulky in size and annoying with cables or most likely that he's a slob. I've used it before to clean up and it works fine on hardwood floors, it may take a few more sweeps to get up all the mess but it works just fine. He's on a student salary, so for him it's fine.

For me, if something is annoying to use, then I likely won't use it. So I'd much rather use something light and cordless to clean up a mess otherwise I'd be more likely to sweep it under the rug - so to speak. - Hope that helps.

Genuine question - since when were we ever able to compare vastly different products based on price ratio? Luxury items are never cost comparitive alternatives to budget counterparts as the name suggests, the price is generally exponentially higher.

      Define "better"?

      Is Wagyu vs cheap beef mince;
      - 20x tastier?
      - 20x more nutritional?
      - 20x more convenient to cook?

Is a Lamborghini Aventador vs Toyota Yaris
      - 50x faster?
      - 50x more luxurious?
      - 50x more engaging to drive?

Is a Hermes wallet vs Velcro Ripcurl wallet
      - 40x more storage space?
      - 40x longer lasting?
      - 40x more convenient to use?

      • People buy these because they think it’s worthwhile, it is not a luxury item.

        • -2

People justifying the purchase of a $1000+ RRP as being "worthwhile" does not negate the fact that it's a luxury item, with the same purpose as as any cheaper vacuum cleaner.

People think that many products are "worthwhile", no different to anybody purchasing an iPhone XS Max to contact their friends/family - it's a luxury, not a necessity.

Thinking that it's worthwhile and being a luxury item are not mutually exclusive.

Lmao strong downvote when you realise that you'd just be digging yourself a hole whilst trying to define why an item being a "worthwhile" purchase does not mean it's not a luxury.

    • A few years ago I took a $69 punt on this corded stick. I later commented about a rebadged one here

It also goes by the Devanti name, red or purple moldings and some have plastic wand instead of metal. eBay is lousy with them, Kogan also sell it. I thought it would be good enough for quick cleans on the kitchen lino or cat litter fragments.

Mains powered, so must have decent suction right? No. It converts electricity to noise. Much like a jet fighter on take-off.

Replaced with a V11A+ and it's night and day.

Point is, Dyson regard themselves as a "Technology Company" and can set the pricing because they know their standards are higher than competitors. Anyone can make a silhouette at a tiny fraction of the cost, but it can't compete as it doesn't have the engineering behind it.
Most of the cheapies verge on pointless cynicism — the belief that if it looks like a top brand, it will sell.
Sadly they become donations or landfill.
