New Format of Upcoming Deals on Homepage

If there is already a thread about this, can someone link me to it?

I am wondering what the motivation for was for changing the UI of upcoming deals on the right of the homepage.

The reduction in size of the number of current upvotes makes it more difficult to quickly read and ascertain popularity of upcoming deals.

  • Not sure why we need to justify every small changes & tweaks to the site, but here we go.

what the motivation for was for changing

    Reasons:

    • Titles for all the node types are now aligned, including ones with votes (deals, comps) and without votes (forum posts, classifieds)
    • Deals with 3 or 4 digit votes, the number will not overflow to the outside of box.

makes it more difficult to quickly read and ascertain popularity

The sidebar boxes are mainly to tell you what recent deals have been posted, and it's heavily cached so the vote count there might be delayed, i.e. not a good estimate. For a better view of popularity of upcoming deals, use the New Deals page. Or just look at the front page for the popular deals.

    • Guess what — the change of moving the votes below the title was also a response to feedback from another user here, saying that the box no longer contains votes with 3 or 4 digits. We are constantly tweaking the sites based on the feedback from the users here and what we think the functionality of each of the sections should be. Like most changes to the site, many didn't notice, some are happy with them, and some aren't.

What is burdensome is the demand of justification in our development choices in those little tweaks (and the entitlement that the demands need to be made). In this case I did try to provide the reasons. Maybe I shouldn't have bothered.

That's what happens when you get chummy with your members. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

        Rule with an iron fist!

I would like to add my opinion that it also is very hard to read the new small vote counter. It is so small, that it is almost worth getting rid of. I would suggest as a possible alternative to change the shade of the row colour, according to the number of votes. Or perhaps bold text or a slightly larger font.

From what I can see, the op posted the thread as politely as they could. "I am wondering what the motivation was" = "I dont like it and it doesnt make sense to me, so please explain"

I think your initial response was perhaps a little lacking in empathy, it felt to me like you thought that they didn't appreciate your efforts - we ALL definitely appreciate your work Scotty !! :)

They then arced up, and responded badly in response.

Tad disappointed with your response, Scotty, as I'm also finding it more difficult to read.

Don't worry about it Scotty - You can't please everyone.

    They'll get used to it.

  • Who uses the full site anyway!? Mobile Site FTW!

i find all those green vote buttons very distracting when trying to read all the titles

You give someone a free service and people still find a reason to complain, wtf is wrong with people these days.

I don't think polite constructive criticism should be interpreted as complaining. The feedback was intended to help improve the site, not cut anyone down.

Same green colour as upvoted deals/comments is the problem?

Can't be doing with new format as not good for my old, tired eyes that need progressive lenses nowadays. Have turned back on Ublock and used element picker to ditch the sidebar. Would be good it there were an option to choose a different display option and revert to old default.

  • Looks easier to read to me.
