SD card 1080p capable

Hey,

So I was browsing through this post:

I posted right down the bottom, with a question, but I think the thread might be dead anyway.

I am looking for an SD card to go into my new digital camera, but it needs to be capable of capturing Full HD (1080) video. It has been suggested that the ones above are not capable of it.

Suggestions? 2 things, what to look for to make sure it's 1080 capable, and also, where to find the cheapest one.

I am also thinking of putting the new card in my android phone, and using the old one out of that into the camera.

How can I tell what class the old SD card is, and what it is capable of? (1080 etc) (it does not say on the card itself)

  • Anything with a Class 6 rating or higher will be perfectly capable.. Class 4 for some brands like Sandisk may do OK too.
Class 2 devices will be too slow.

  • Most of these (maybe not the Class 4 one) will be fine:

Notice that the Class 10 A-RAM is almost 50% more expensive than a Class 4.

Might also want to go with a standard SD card over a Micro SD as you can get an A-RAM Class 10 SD Card 32GB for $55 (+shipping) which is cheaper than a Micro SD.

    • Cheers,

yeh I was doing some research, and found that for full HD recording, a minimum of Class 6 is required in this camera,

So I guess it's unlikely that my old micro SD from my phone, will be fast enough for Full HD

      • Highly unlikely!

  • What happens if you try to record onto an SD card that is not fast enough?

I have a 4 year old (and I assume slow) 2GB SD card that I have tried to record 1080p video onto, and there were no problems, the video is smooth, the properties on the video state a resolution of 1920x1080. Is it possible that a digital camera maybe doesn't need as much bandwidth because of lower quality sound or something?

    Looking at the video properties:

total audio and video bitrate for one of the movies is 30516 kbi/s

    which translates to 3.725 mBy/s

which is under the 4mBy/s limit of a Class 4 card.

maybe the camera is scaling down the quality slightly in some aspect to throttle the amount of data that the card has to handle?

  • I went into OW just to have a look at the different SD cards available, and asked the staff member to help.

Basically, full size SD cards, the class 4 card stated on the packet that it was good enough to record full HD.

I emailed the seller of the ebay ones above, the Micro SD ones (also class 4), asking about full HD capabilities, and he said that this class 4 is NOT enough, and he would recommend a higher class for full HD recording.

    Main point of this post:
Do you guys think that there might be a difference in speeds of the Micro to the full size SD cards in the same class?

Because I was planning on buying this Micro SD card, so I could use it in my camera with the adaptor, or use it in my phone without the adaptor.

    Cheers

    • AFAIK Class Rating is minimum standard. Some may exceed the minimum standard by differing degrees.
