Hard Drive For Good TB/$ Ratio

Hi,
I'd like a reasonable (pref. not SMR) hard drive that has a good dollar per terabyte.
Internal/external, doesn't matter.
Any size is fine as long as the value is good, but under 200 would be nice.
7200 rpm preferred but makes no difference to me.
Australian stock needed.

  • Not sure what you mean by SMR?

But my preference is currently the Seagate 3Tb portables at Officeworks for $99 - the $33 per Tb is seemingly the est bang for buck. I also prefer portable vs desktop powered models due to portability, lower power, and less issues if you have a blackout (a UPS will only go so far). Also, nationwide availability & easy warranty returns.

Also, they're shuckable, so if the USB port dies due to unforseen (toddler) circumstances it's an easy recovery with another external case - can't say the same of the WD drives with the USB port directly on the HDD motherboard, sadly.

This probably isn't the BEST Tb/$ ratio that some other 3.5" drives might have, but on balance the net additional benefits had won me over.

  • Depends on overall purpose. WD Red will last longer/more reliable in a high usage drive, or you can get cheaper drives.

    • Cheaper is preferred, its for media which is write once read many

      • read many

Yep, where you don't necessarily want the cheapest possible.
If it's for media etc, I'd much rather a WD Red for reliability. Last thing I wanna do is fill 4+TB and then lose it

        • Its not personal, etc.

I'm happy to look at Reds, etc, any good value ones?

          • @haboutnnah: Reds cost more, so again value is in the eye of the beholder.

Best to have a flick through MSY etc and see what takes your fancy

  • +1

I bought the recently posted deals from Amazon for the 10TBs.

    2x https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/451011 (shuckable)

    &

    2x https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/440654

    Combined it with cashback & TRS for the 2nd batch I'm averaging < $30 /TB for 40TB

If you don't really care about internal/external or w/e then buy something like

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/451551

    $33/TB for 3TB.

  • I have heard good things about Western Digital Blue's Range but honestly not enough research to warrant them totally 100% only that I know many reviewers point to it at the beginning cheaper end so there must be something there if you want to research into it some more.

But you know reviewers are just humans too and also prone to make many mistakes like us mere mortals as I have experienced in the past so take everything you see forth here with a grain of salt.

I am risking it right now on a Seagate Expansion 8TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEB8000100) from Amazon US bought around July 23 2017.

It was about $254 AUD but I had some promotion codes and vouchers so slightly lower.

    $31.75 AUD / TB roughly.

It is even cheaper now at $203.44 AUD + shipping which makes it $25.43 AUD / TB.

It is an external drive so keep that in mind so meant for storing storage I believe but again don't quote me on that.

When my eventually dies be it 3 years from now or 8 or whatever I will try report on it.

    Hope this little anecdote helps.

I think I saw $20 AUD / TB once before but never below that though I could be wrong and have seen a $15 AUD / TB once or twice randomly in the wild.

    Good luck friend.

    • I bought the 10TB seagate 7200 air filled drive, but Amazon is dragging their feet.

I now use camelcamelcamel to track them.

      • What was the final $/TB?

        Before and after delivery.

  • Just saw This pop up - $250 for 10 Tb.

Dare say this is the current best $/Tb available - but you're 25% over your budget, and also not AU stock.

    • Since I got the Officeworks one already, I bought this too for when I inevitably fill this one up.
