For those that don't like WD for whatever reason Officeworks still have the Seagate 3tb drive for $99 https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/seagate-3t…

I'm a WD fan but Seagate apparently can be pulled apart as they don't have proprietary connections thus making em more reliable?

      • I'm not sure about that particular model but that is a great advantage for down the track if need be

      • +2

yeah the seagate models use a detachable USB -> SATA bridge board which makes data recovery much easier. the wd and toshiba portable drives require a sata cable soldered directly to the board and a couple of resistors removed to bypass the inbuilt usb bridge.

i recommend seagate usually as the diagnostic ports on the back give a lot of info and provide low level access - but thats just me :)

good timing. i just had a wd my passport ultra fail on me with imporant work stuff and just realised not shuckable!!! so will be using seagates from now on because easier to recover the data.

  • I got this from MSY a week ago for $99 :) Great price.

Disk Drive performance and reliability = WD then Tosh then SG

Buy in that order if you can.

All the others like maxtor, Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM and Samsung have either gone out of business are OEM only or have been sold off to the above.

    • 25 years dealing with countless hard drives.

I find that leads to an utter obsession with backups rather than brands.

i dont have 25 years dealing with countless hard drives, but have a good ~10 years experience recovering hard drives.

i'd say i get an equal amount of WD and seagate drives, but the seagate drives have a higher recovery rate (for me). most WD's are totally dead to the point that a new read head assembly is required.

      • Hi can you point men to some links on how to recover from a Seagate portable USB powered external hard drive. What are the common tricks

  • Better off getting this.
    Slightly cheaper per TB.

That's a desktop version (3.5"), not portable (2.5"). So externally powered as opposed to USB powered.

Look at the bright side, the bigger the better lol ~~

          That's what she said

      • Sorry, didn't realize.

  • Do they provide a software for encryption so you need a password to access the files on the drive?

    • Can use bitlocker with any drive

  • Does JB Hi-Fi price match MSY?

      Yep.

Your mileage may vary per store

  • What do you guys use these hard drives for nowadays? Mine used to be filled with music and movies/tv shows but now they're all available to stream without needing to store.
