Quality TLC drive, suitable for replacing the default 512gb/1tb steam deck drive.

A bit overkill considering steam deck is only pci 3.0, and this drive is 4.0. But 3.0 drives are pretty much impossible to buy nowadays. And running it at pci 3.0 probably helps keep the drive cool anyway.

ATL according to 3camels, and only just recently dropped below $300 consistently.

Alternatively, Scorptec look to have the Kingston NV3 2TB M.2 2230 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD currently on sale for $189.

  • Would both the Kingston Nv3 and SN770M be good for Steam Deck oled upgrades? WOuld you choose one over the other specifically?

    • +1

Probably whichever one runs the coolest or most efficiently.

    • Main differences I see is that NV3 is QLC, while SN770M is TLC. Thus the NV3 has an endurance rating of 640 TBW, while SN770M has endurance rating of 1200 TBW.

Techpowerup's Kingston NV3 review (though not in 2230 form factor, so results may be a touch different than 2280 form factor),

Alternatively, I think an another TLC drive is the CORSAIR MP600 Mini 2TB for $234 as part of the Prime day sales https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0D42CPWT8?

Amazon lists it as a TLC drive, but I never trust amazon to have the right info for ssds.

How does this compare to the SN740 which is regularly sold on AliExpress?
ChatGPT is telling me they are basically the same, except for warranty and support

    • Essentially the same hardware, though there are a few small differences. Of note from this Toms Hardware review of the SN740,
      https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/ssds/wd-sn740-2tb…

"SN740 has lower TBW at all capacities than its retail counterpart. This includes only 500TB written at 2TB, compared with 1200TB on the SN770M."

      and,

"There's also a small difference in marketed capacity, for example between 500GB on the SN770M and 512GB on the SN740. This is due to the SN740 having less overprovisioning, which does mean that it will have more user space available."

I've now had a look at Aliexpress, and given you can get them with discounts down to $160-$170 (thou, the choice sale is ending in like 20mins for this sale), from at least from 2 stores that have sold thousands, I'd say it's worth the gamble if you don't care about possible warranty support (outside aliexpress 'choice' guarantee of like a month or so).

Given the one in my OP is coming from Amazon US though, even their warranty would be a pita outside general amazon return window as well. But at least you would get support. As I highly doubt WD would honor aliexpress storefront grey market oem drive purchases. YMMV I guess.

I picked up a 2Tb SN740 a few years ago for around $120-130. If it was that price again, it'd be a hard sell for the SN770.

E: Seems it was $135 just 2 months ago. I don't think you need cutting edge speed for gaming (assuming this is going into a steam deck/Rog Ally type device.)
