Credit Card Compromised

hi all.

I just found out that my credit card information was being used fraudulently. luckily, the bank recognised the irregular payments instantly, blocked the payments, cancelled the card, and notified me. i'm guessing that it was stolen online when using it to pay for something. i recently bought flights and perhaps the website wasn't secure, or perhaps my computer is compromised.

I'm just curious if this has happened to anyone else here and how they think their card information may have been stolen. any stories?

No, no one in the history of mankind has ever had their credit card details compromised. It's just you buddy.

i recently bought flights and perhaps the website wasn't secure

    Which website?

    perhaps my computer is compromised

Have you run any antivirus/microsoft security essentials/malwarebytes etc applications to scan your computer for rootkits/keyloggers and the like?

    • it was a skyscanner affiliate. that was the last big purchase on the card. however, i also applied for a chinese visa and had to fill out my details on a sheet of paper! my pc is always up to date with microsoft updates and scans. rootkits can be impossible to find. i guess its important to keep in mind that it may not have been stolen recently.

      • Were you using SSL and is your network compromised? Are your routers up to date and have you disabled WPS/change default admin credentials.

        • probably no to all

        • highly likely it was just stolen from some website not secured properly (or my browser is compromised)

        It's like food poisoning,
You may think you know, but you ll never know

        Could be your PC compromised
Card skimmed at one of the shops you used it at
        Some dodgy online store
        Identiy theft

Unless it's very obvious, just virus scan everything and get new credit cards and be aware of any activity

        • Yea i recognise that. Luckily nothing was lost

with food poisoning you can be pretty confident that the food you ate 1 year ago isn't making you sick because someone broke through the security of the shop who sold it to you. The same can't be said about internet purchases and credit cards.

I had 2 of my cards compromised at the same time once. My CBA CC, CBA fraud department called me at midnight and asked me if I was buying a laptop from Harvey Norman, I said no I was asleep, so they cancelled the card and no transaction was let through. Checked my Citibank Debit card the next day, and there were 8 international transactions on my card. Took nearly 2 months for me to get that money back from Citibank.

Now my wireless is secure, I have a Sophos UTM machine between the mondem and the rest of the house, Malwarebytes Premium and Sophos Endpoint running on my PC. I have different passwords for everything, very secure, generated passwords. And I hadn't used the Citibank card in months. So buggered if I know how they got them, I don't even carry the Citibank card with me.

    • That was nice of them to call you - Macquarie once just sent me an sms saying we've detected blah blah blah and have blocked the transaction. I was actually buying something at 2am thanks to Ozbargain and subsequently missed out on the deal…

      • I have found their fraud department spot on.

Another time I was paying $3000 at Flight Centre, I had already increase the limit on the app on my phone. We did the transaction and it came up declined, and literally in less than 30 seconds I got a call from CBA asking if I had done this transaction. I said yes it's me, CBA said okay go again, and it was approved. That is real good security on my card.

      • A few years ago I got a call from the ANZ about tickets for Disneyland Paris luckily for my daughter I knew she was buying them otherwise I would have said no, the phone call was less than 5 minutes after my wife had put through the transaction

  • Happens to everybody.

Mine was used to buy fluffy cowboy boots somewhere in Texas. Compromised when I used the card in a Seattle restaurant five years prior. Got a call from the bank to check if it was me buying the boots. I replied wtf.

      Soooo……did you buy them?

  • Only time I got my CC or any other card compromised in the past 15 years was when Agoda asked for a scan of my CC to verify account.

AMEX blocked everything and refunded me + posted a new card out in 3 days.

I had a similar thing a while ago. Don't assume it was something you recently did, Whole databases of credit cards get sold through hacker groups, and your card may sit on a list for a while.

  • yea im sure it happens but was wondering how frequent it is among the ozbargain community, since we collectively seem to purchase a lot electronically.

Usually your credit card details are taken when used on unsecured payment portals. They can also be skimmed when used wirelessly through paywave. If you are concerned about having a keylogger installed or spyware you should backup, reinstall windows and secure it using an antivirus/firewall and a secure browser like chrome or firefox. Only install programs from trusted sites, usually the creators.

      skimmed via paywave is unlikely

  • Happened to my partner. We think we know how they got the card details but probably best not to post how in case any Ozbargainers get any ideas! (Bank was good in refunding the fradulent payments!)

  • Yeah we copped around $300 worth of Uber charges from Sydney. We live in Qld, have never had an UBER account and that card had never been out of the house. 28 Degrees got it sorted and we got the money back though.

you see, if the cost of better protection greatly exceeds the cost of fraud, they generally do nothing.

Numerous times. Theft of mail from mailboxes was where at least one breach occurred. I reported it to my local police but did my own bit of detective work. The largest charge was for a couple grand from a jeweller. I called the jeweller and explained the situation. "Is that the guys that got caught?" they asked. Apparently a phone order had come in for a piece of jewellery to be delivered to a hotel in a tourist area. The courier called the recipient beforehand to confirm the room number and was told the recipient would just meet him in the foyer. Courier smells a rat, calls jeweller who calls cops. Courier and cops deliver justice rather than jewellery.
I then called my local cops, linked the two event numbers and forgot about it until I received a summons to appear as a witness. Lost a day's work and sat around a courthouse foyer for hours only to hear that a deal had been done and I didn't need to give evidence. I did get to have a chat with a private investigator about the bad guys though. They apparently made a living from mail theft, and the arrest for the jewellery resulted in the search of a house where a lot of stolen mail was recovered, painting a picture of drugs, theft and fraud as a lifestyle.

      Juicy story!

    • Ahh, justice feels even better than my morning coffee and morning movement -_-

  • Happens to me every few years. NAB are very good at detecting. Just happened last week and it was a 69 cent purchase for E Games in the US. Guy said he had many that day that were the same. Still waiting for a new card.

The time before that someone was buying crystal balls on ebay. The time before that it was just after I checked into a hotel in Melbourne.

You'd think they'd have seen they'd get busted.

  • Yes i got done.

  • Yeah happened to me 3 times and each time CBA caught it. One time it was Paypal and someone from germany bought gold ingots from Ireland to send to Russia. I contacted paypal got refunded and they closed the account lost all my history. Had the address and everything super weird.

  • Just requested for a new card due to some debits from "Microsoft Google PayPal "

    • +1

Microsoft Google PayPal automatically debited my card a couple of times. When I realised it I have been debited twice (did not pick up the first time), I asked for a new card too.

  • +1

A pending transaction appeared in my debit card account today:

    Date Time Description Amount
    26 Apr 2019 2:43AM APPLE PTY LIMITED SY $0.00

I've never had any dealings with Apple. I haven't used an ATM in over a year. The only vendors I've used this card with were AliExpress, Kogan Mobile and Hobby Warehouse. I did use Paywave at Woolies two weeks ago.

No harm done, new card coming.

    • +2

My money would go on AliExpress for that one

      • Are AliExpress known to sell credit card details? I bought something from them for the first time a few days ago. Should I be worried?

        • No idea. I just trust overseas websites much less

  • +1

Yeah I have had it happen just in the past year on two cards from different banks - but the banks didn't pick it up, I did so check your statements people. Both banks were great to deal w though and didn't take too long to refund me. I used to use both cards for online purchases so I assume the card details were obtained from one of those transactions… such is life :)

  • This is very common, not sure if this is a serious question?
