I have a very similar grinder. If you're trying to cut down on your coffee consumption these kinds of grinders are great for that because making a coffee becomes a chore. The Aeropress makes a great coffee, but I think either getting a good quality electric grinder or buying pre-ground is a better option than these manual grinders.

It is rather a pain, but I treat it almost like a bit of a ritual where I need to just slow down for a few minutes rather than rushing to get a caffeine hit.

I have looked for a decent electric burr grinder though (I'm not that much of a meditating hippy, honest). Does anyone have any suggestions?

        • +1. Are these on the Myer eBay 20% off deal?

I personally use hand grinders at home and work, but the Breville is great value and better than most of the cheaper hand grinders - you need to spend more like $300 to get something better (Lido, Feld, Commandante, Kinu, Helor, etc)

      • Depends on your budget. The favourite around here is the Breville Smart Grinder Pro, which is often available for ~$160-$180, like this one. I've worn out two different Brevilles before because they're not built to be serviced (I couldn't even replace the burrs…and guess which part is most likely to wear out?). I personally have my eye on a Compak K3 Touch which is pretty pricey and has some great reviews, but I'm waiting for when I can afford one from an eBay dealer when there's a good 20% off sale.

        • Far out, they are rather large. I think I'll stick to the hand cranked one. I wonder if I can gear down a motor to run off an 18650 to drive it? Hmmm…

@banana365: I would shoot for an RPM in the 30-60 range, and the gearbox would have to be able to take a reasonable amount of torque. Twice I've had uncrushable bits end up in the grinder and I've had to disassemble to clear the jam, so you probably don't want a motor capable of too much torque either…. Holding the cylinder in place while the top is rotated will also require something substantial (or a drill).

@GhostofB: I've just remembered a small electric Stanley screwdriver I have that might fit the purpose. Just stick a hex end on my existing grinder and I can swap back and forth between manual and electric.

I know this will get negged to hell but I bought one of these about 6 years ago for about $800(I think) and it's been a great machine and the built in conical burr grinder is a beaut. No mess, whole unit takes up bugger all space as you don't have a separate grinder unit.

Jetblack can be a real pain to deal with at times but the other mob in the alternative link are pretty easy to deal with by all accounts when speaking to some friends who have purchased off them.
