Best Android Phone ~ $500 - $700

The power button on my samsung S5 has fallen off, I've been quote $180 from samsung for the repair. I don't think its worth it for the age of the phone.

Not keen to spend $1000+ for a phone, and wondering what is currently the 'best' phone in the $500-700 range. Would it be a newer 'budget' phone, or a older model of a flag ship phone? I prefer Android operating system, and seems there are more options in this price range as well.

I'm looking for something that is reasonably responsive, but doesn't have to be the latest and fastest. Camera quality does not bother me too much, I have dedicated cameras when I want to get serious photos. If there are still phones with changeable batteries, microSD card and 3.5mm headphone port, that would be my preference. At least 64GB if storage can not be expanded with microSD card.

I just purchased a 64gb s9+ for $580 (refurb), it has a microsd slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, but no changeable battery (AFAIK, they stopped after the s6). Coming from an iPhone 6, it's a worthwhile upgrade on all fronts.

    • where did you buy it refurbished from? Do they put in a new battery with the refurbished units, or will it be an older battery?

    • I don't like refurb, people return it for some reasons and the workshop tech never tested them properly.

That was my price range too back in last November. I ended up getting OnePlus 6 even though the 6T was around the corner. Check them out.

turns out there's only 4 possible phones in my criteria. chuck in what you want and see what comes up

  • I asked a similar question a few months ago and ended up getting the Xiaomi Mi 8 from Kogan: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/xiaomi-mi-8-64gb-black-xiaomi/ (the 128gb one)

It's similar to the Pocophone but has a bit better performance and the camera is actually really incredible, I just got back from Japan and I'm 110% stoked with how well the camera works on this thing, including 4k video recording! I don't know if there's a phone that currently can match it's specs on the market for it's price.

  • for what it's worth, I ended up signed up to the $65 telstra plan at jb hi fi for the samsung s10e on this deal.
