Recommend Me a Good Home Security System

Could someone recommend me a good home security system? I don't know anything about this stuff. Preferably minimum of 4 cameras and good quality audio and video quality (HD). Anything <$2000 is ideal. Do some people think its completely ok to tresslass into somebody else's yard (either front or back) and snoop around?

I literally just caught a stranger picking fruit from my tree (I think they're oranges but not 100% certain) in my backyard a few mins ago. I was in the bathroom and went outside to hang a couple of shirts outside to dry. I never gave my permission and she climbed the side fence to access my backyard. WTF? You can't even see the tree from the road, you can only see it if you're in my backyard. I shouted 'hey' and she turned to me, dropped the orange she was holding and hastily climbed over the fence carrying a full bag of fruit. I ran back through the house, out the front door to try and find her to no avail. This is not the first time I've caught random strangers snooping around in my backyard. My side gate is locked, how else did she get into my backyard if she didn't climb it?? But seriously, don't go into strangers' yard without their permission…to steal fruit no less. It sounds so bizarre because its weird. what the hell.

I have a Dahua system (discussed here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/348672). Happy with it!

    • How easy is it to use? have you had any issues with it? Thanks, I'll take a look at it now.

      • +1

Simple to use after initial physical install/software config. No issues with at all - works flawlessly and both the picture and audio quality (1 way audio meaning I can't remotely talk back to people just listen/record as I didn't bother with installing an amp/speaker) at day/night is very good.

        • Appreciate the reply. May I ask where you bought it (e.g eBay) and how much you paid?

Came here to say the same thing… Dahua or Hikvision are at the higher end of the budget systems. Great bang for buck systems.

Only thing that OP might need to make note of is the requirement for audio recording. This may or may not be legal when used in this application. I’m pretty sure that you cannot record audio when used as a surveillance system…

      • Appreciate the reply. Which model/s of Dahua ie Hikvision do ou recommend or is anything in their range just fine? Can we really not record audio? Hm, I didn't know that.

        • +1

As for what model, it depends on what features you want and where you are putting them.

And yes, under a lot of circumstances, it is illegal to have listening/audio recording equipment and record conversations. Unless you are party to the conversation or it’s important to lawfully protect yourself, you are not allowed to record conversations. It’s also illegal to give those recordings to anyone else who is not party the the conversation, unless it’s in line with protecting your lawful interests (ie: give it to your lawyer, ok, give it to your Facebook followers, not ok.)

It becomes even more important to know the laws when it covered employees or if you have workers in your house.

          • @pegaxs: Really, I just want something that works, has clear video quality, motion sensor and something that will last for years. Obviously I don't want to spend a small fortune but I'll be satisfied with something that isn't crappy quality and will easily break.

  • Ubiquiti POE cameras. I have 10 around the house and sheds. Can access remotely. Good image quality. Has IR booster option and provides very clear images in total darkness at distances upto 30m (closest street light is over a km away).

    • I'll look into that, appreciate the reply. Are they expensive or easy to easy?

      • +1

I spent about $3k for the 10 cameras not including cabling. The cost was really just the server, 10 cameras, POE adapters. If you take away 5 cameras, it will be $1.9k which will fit your budget and be more than necessary for a suburban house.

Easy to install. Run cat5e/cat6 cables from server to camera. Connect server to router/switch. Connect switch to adapters. Connect adapters to cable. Connect cable to camera.

        • Thanks for the info.

  • Get a Dog.

Last time I had guys come past and one of them pissed on my door, drunk, I asked the dog what the guy looked like and what he was wearing, and the dog couldn’t remember… My camera system remembered perfectly.

    • Getting one right now isn't viable but maybe in the future.

      • If you were a real bogan you'd already have a pack of gnarly looking dogs. :)

You will probably find that someone bold enough to climb the fence into your yard for the sake of some oranges won't be bothered by a camera.

But if you wanted something a bit cheaper than your budget I just got one of these and I'm really happy with it:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Reolink-RLC-410W-4MP-2560-x-…

Most cheap cameras have rubbish software / apps but the Reolink seems quite good.

    • You're probably right, they wont be fazed by a camera but it would definitely give me a bit of peace of mind. Thanks for the link. I'm still a little weirded out by someone climbing a fence to pick oranges, it's like 'why?'.

    • +1 Reolink, I have one out in the sun most of the day and works fine, although the lens ring is now orange. You can setup diy dvr via ftp and turn off all external access.

  • get a good club, leave it by your bedside table.

    • So you went through my post history to prove a point. What was the point?
