Hey guys,

Selling at cost price (or so I am told) and limited to 40 units, save 30% off and get free delivery on the best dive torch I have used.
It's not perfect, but for that price point it blows everything else out of the water.

Great review here: http://budgetlightforum.com/node/54812

  • What's the point of having 3 separate LEDs and lenses? Surely that just adds unnecessary bulk and weight for no benefit other than 'style'?

    • +4

Does weight matter much when underwater?

      • +3

        Ever heard of cement shoes?

        • +1

Just take 500g off your weight belt. Problem solved. :p

      • depends on how buoyant it is..

    • Separate LED's and reflectors makes the beam tighter and can penetrate further through the water.
Again, bulk and weight isn't an issue underwater

      • Separate LED's and reflectors makes the beam tighter and can penetrate further through the water.

Do you have a source for these claims? Beam tightness is a function of lens design not the number of lenses. Penetration is a function of wavelength, lumens, and tightness. If separate LEDs and reflectors is a benefit it would be common for scuba lights to do this. If you look at scuba light reviews, they all have single reflectors. This 3 reflector design is a gimmick.

Again, bulk and weight isn't an issue underwater

Reductio ad absurdum proves that statement wrong, and you have to get it to the water in the first place.

        • Beam tightness is primarily from the depth of the reflector and size of the LED actually.

Get it to the water in the first place? If you can't manage to get a 1kg (if that) light to the water then you don't have a chance with 10kg of dive gear on your back.

If you want something that has 1 battery and 1 LED then go find something with 1/3 of this lights brightness and less runtimes elsewhere.

You clearly aren't a diver so I don't know why I'm wasting my time explaining this to you.

            @Lionheart:

Beam tightness is primarily from the depth of the reflector and size of the LED actually.

As I said, it's a function of reflector design. You claimed it was made tighter by having separate LEDs and reflectors which is false.

An extra 1kg in my checked baggage is a problem, as is the bulk.

If you want something that has 1 battery and 1 LED then go find something with 1/3 of this lights brightness and less runtimes elsewhere.

            I didn't say I want something with "1 battery and 1 LED"?

  • Does this one leak or rust out like the last thorfire scuba torch deal?

    • I've been using mine for 4 months and no rusting at all, but obviously it should be washed in freshwater after every use. It's the same grade aluminium as 99% of torches use.

  • How to dive?

    • Do you even Padi bro?

  • *Batteries not included….

    • 4 high capacity 18650's are recommended

  • Anyone have any thoughts on how this would go (attached to a pole) as a prawning light? Haven't been prawning for about 30 years but seems like this would be better than lugging a bit battery around.

    • +1

Should be sweet but it will be fairly heavy when fully loaded with the batteries.

I have helped a few people build prawning lights from scratch from PVC pipes and and Aluminium heat sinks. Its not to hard to do.

Thanks mate. Any links or tips for DIY?

        • With a light so bright so won't need to put it under water i think. I was at Terrigal the other week fishing and people where prawning using headlamps. This depends on water quality also at Narooma i can see 5+ meters deep with a normal light cause the water is so clear.

I can't find the other thread but i will have a look for it.

Depends how much light you need when prawning. This thing is very bright being 3 LED, but also built like a tank and quite heavy, moreso if on the end of a pole I'm guessing.

If you don't use full brightness I'd probably go with something smaller and lighter for your application.

When used for diving and it's clipped onto your BCD it's not noticeable.

Not really sure. Have only been a few times as a kid and technology has changed a bit since then. Was guessing mid power would be sufficient with the S1 while giving good run time.

moreso if on the end of a pole I'm guessing

I'm not as precious as some about carrying a bit of weight (especially underwater) but you make a good point about the weight being on the end of a pole. Could get annoying after a few hours.

Have plenty of batteries and might take your suggestion and get a few smaller lights and the kids can get more involved too.

        Cheers

    • The LED prawning lights work fine and are cheaper than this anyway mate, and they are already attached to a pole.

  • is there a wrist mount, or wrist strap so you can have hands free to put up your sausage?
how much better is it than xtar?

    • I use a double thick zip/cable tie with a snap clip Basso, works great, but most of the time I use my GoPro video lights so I palm it off to my mate to use

Lionheart vs. GhostofB: is this the first time we've had the seller and commenter fly into personal attack mode?
I was gonna grab the popcorn, but…

    • The seller flew into attack mode, not the commenter. I made no personal attacks.

      • He's not the seller he has nothing to do with Thorfire. He post deals they give him for Ozbargain and Budgetlightforum.

        • If he has nothing to do with Thorfire, why does it say "Associated"?

          • +1

@GhostofB: Yeah. That also confused me.

(And, GhostofB, sorry I incorrectly assumed you contributed to the 'personal attack'!)

          • @GhostofB: Some reason if you ask for deals from a seller (even though you can't share affiliate links here) you have to mark associated. Like the lads that get the deals on USB cables and chargers from Amazon they also have to mark associated.

    • I'm simply someone that passes on the good deals for Thorfire when they come up, nothing in it for me. As I've done this a few times this website presumed I am associated.

I'm somewhat of an expert when it comes to torches so my knowledge being questioned by GhostofB wasn't something I had the patience for. He isn't a diver nor into lights, so it is what it is.
