Certain Local Websites Timeout on Kogan NBN

Anyone on Kogan NBN have issues connecting to some local websites in the past few days?

I started noticing certain websites not working, and some loading really slowly.

https://my.bupa.com.au/
https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/
http://fines.vic.gov.au/

All other sites like ozbargain, telstra, optus, voda, youtube, ato, etc all work. Tracert shows:

Tracing route to whirlpool.net.au [104.20.13.233]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1

3 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms 10.246.140.231

When I connect to my VPN, all the sites work fine.

Not sure if it's isolated to me. Anyone else on Kogan NBN able to access those site above no issues? I'm in VIC.

  • oh, i forgot to mention that my download speeds aren't an issue, getting around 90mbps, so certainly not a speed issue.

change your dns from the default to the cloudflare or the google one and see, it could be their dns being shitty.

  • tried that 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 but still the same result, happening regardless of directly plugging into the nbn box vs the wireless router. This behaviour only started a few days ago

  • tried the usual unplug plug and power off on all the boxes? raising a ticket with Kogan NBN support?
How is their service otherwise? was debating…switching from Activ8me FTTP

    • yeah tried all the usual power on power off etc, raised a ticket with Kogan support but they were a little clueless, i think Level 1 is just a triage ticket raising bunch.

Service otherwise varies but not too bad in my opinion. Never under 50mbps, but i don't game, so hard to say for those who need consistent ping and latency.

  • Had this with a couple of ISP's over the years, it's some kind of DNS routing issue on their end. Give them a call and ask them to sort it out.

This clearly has nothing to do with DNS.

      • Maybe. All I know is I called the relative ISP and that's what they said. Maybe it was something on their end? Or some other kind of routing issue. Either way I have had the problem and calling the ISP fixed it.

The other funny problem I've had (though with lightly different symptoms) is when an ISP put me on CGNAt and I get an IP conflict with another customer who also uses OpenDNS. For the OP I think it's the former rather than the latter though.

      • Any ideas what it might be?

I am stying with a friend in Victoria for a few months and they have Kogan NBN. Having the same issue. Some websites do not work at the moment, for example: hotcopper.com.au, smile.com.au and bleepingcomputer.com, whirlpool.net.au. Using the Tracerout command, all the websites previously listed have "as4826.melbourne.megaport.com" in common. What does you think?

Having the same issues. If Kogan can't sort this out, I'm outta here :(

      • Yes, I know how you feel. I am very frustrated that I cannot get my daily dose of share market news.

      • Looks like it the websites are working again for me and my friend. Now I can browse share market news to my heart's desire.

  • Kogan just called me and said its an nbn issue, hmmm, anyone else having issues not on kogan?

    • Same issue on Kogan. Can't test other NBN atm, but from other ISP's looking glass, traceroute seems to be fine. For example AussieBB.
I noticed this problem for Whirlpool since last 2/3 weeks. Earlier, it was intermittently working. I noticed that DNS resolves to 2 IPs and one of them was timing out. But looks like both are unreachable for 3/4 days now.
I doubt it to be NBN wide issue. For what it's worth, I am in Melbourne too.

      • Update: after browsing whirlpool forum on mobile data, there are few other threads on similar "cannot reach some sites" topic. Some did get it working after IPv6 disable, change DNS, smaller MTU, TLS version change, but these seem to work randomly. A recent thread discussed such issue impacting multiple ISPs and ABB got it fixed by NBN.
So it might be an NBN issue as Kogan rep said. Hope they are chasing to get a fix.

        • Yeeee from my place too, all working as expected.

Update: seems like everything is working now for me, VIC.

  • I'm on Kogan NBN and I frequent Whirlpool, haven't had any issues with the website works fine,

Just ran a tracert and results below,

    Tracing route to whirlpool.net.au [104.20.14.233]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
    2 * * * Request timed out.
    3 122 ms 5 ms 4 ms 10.246.211.36
    4 5 ms 4 ms 5 ms 104.20.14.233

    Trace complete.

  • Tried changing your DNS provider?
    I use 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

Also, not sure if Kogan runs still uses IPV4 or if they've switched to V6, but there are a set of IPV6 DNS addresses you can use from cloudflare as well (I run Voda, they use V6).

  • I had to set MTU to 1492, despite it's an FTTP box.
