AFR Deliberately Make It Difficult to Cancel Subsciption?

Hi,

I am trying to cancel my AFR (The Australian Financial Review) subscription but facing various difficulties.

On PC:
I go to www.afr.com -> Log in -> My Account -> Manage your subscription

The page shows: "For instructions on how to cancel your subscription at any time, click here"
I click to "Click here", it redirect me to support.fairfaxmedia.com.au
The page says:
"oops
You're not authorised to access this page"
——-> nothing I can do

On my Ipad
I go to www.afr.com -> Log in -> My Account -> Manage your subscription -> click here ( same as above)

then it redirect to support.fairfaxmedia.com.au, a log-in window appears, says "Sign in to Metro Publishing Subscriber Services"

I enter my login detail and click "sign in" -> nothing happen

There is a red line say "Cookies must be enabled in your browser to sign in, click here to enable them"
I click the link, redirect to fairfaxmedia.zendesk.com, but it is a blank page.

I have encounter various difficulties when trying to cancel subcription to some other services before. I think they intentionally make it difficult or impossible to unsubscibe and this is very dirty.

Could anyone with subsciption to Afr try to cancel your subscription to see if you face same problems as me?
Thanks

  • Yeah, as a fellow Fairfax subscriber (I refuse to pay for the SMH full price when I know I can get it at 50% off), you have to call them up to cancel

  • I sent online message to cancel. Actioned within a few hours.

  • Yes. Dubious business practice. Today I cxl my SMH subscription.

Surprisingly, its not listed as active payments on Paypal, and I was still being billed monthly.
I wonder how does that happen ?

Elsewhere, cutting off of Paypal took care of unsubscriptions.

  • Absolute farce! Impossible to cancel online. Takes you to a portal to 'sign in' where you don't even have an account! Have to call… Dodgy!

    Two years passed!
It is still impossible to easily cancel. I will never subscribe to anything again!

  • Nah their backend is a little dated and I don't think they done anything to it in the last decade, Most of their users probably don't cancel so maybe
they couldn't be bothered :-) just call their customer service

I been their subscribers for the last 10-15 years, their sites and apps are pretty good I get all the stuff I need for my investment, as long as they keep that stable I am super happy
