      • Yeah, I believe there just isn't a perfect solution yet. Best I've managed is to use a TV tuner card on my computer and a cheap antenna with varying degrees of success. Really can't wait for an all internet solution, I really miss the TV days where you'd look around to see if something good was on :D!

I would've thought the apps would give you better quality than the tv tuner card, showing most shows, just not all

          • @spackbace: Yeah, I would too, it might be my devices but I've never managed to get more than standard definition out of the apps. It might be that widevine level stuff people always talk about.

French movies are pretty interesting…first time when I watch them it's pretty culture shock for me but it's different today I can understand better their artistic porn sorry I meant works.

Thank you so much for posting this OP. I love SBS. :-)

Belongs in forums. Should we advertise other free to air channels?

    • If another free to air tv channel also broadcasts 24hrs of over 700 films a year.. then sure!

      • -3

Don't assume everyone is interested in films.

  • Will it be on Foxtel?

    • +1

No. SBS's "World Movies Channel" exited Foxtel a few years back when Foxtel bumped up their transmission charges to make it uneconomic to continue. They (Foxtel) have done this a few times over the years (Ovation Chanel was replaced with their own Arts Channel). These were low traffic channels anyway, and for SBS I think it was a costly exercise from the beginning.
It would appear that the new channel will be a rebirth of the old World Movie Channel that was on Foxtel. Properly marketed , the new channel should reach a greater audience than it ever did on Foxtel.

I can't confirm, and accept I may be corrected on this.

      Cheers :)

    No it doesn't,it belongs here because it's a BARGAIN….because it's FREE!!

  • +5

This channel isn't for everyone but if you're into World movies in various languages SBS curate quite a number of good movies, been watching SBS foreign movies for a few years. Glad they have a channel now. SBS are quite unique as they also translate and subtitle movies they buy - I don't think anyone else does this so some of them are pretty obscure. When I was in the UK, we didn't have a similar world movies channel to the Foxtel one either, Sky movies in the UK was rubbish and the BBC/C4 just don't dedicate as much time to foreign movies.

    Bring it on.

  • Wish in Europe the taxpayers could afford to do this sort of thing. Something in English there would have been great.

  • Perfect for my 4K Television

  • Damn, this is pretty good… might actually watch Tv for once…

Next bargain: air you breathe because it's free.

Technically this isn't even free. It's funded via taxes, unlike the air which is really free.

    • So is the sidewalk, but it doesn’t cost you to walk on it.

      • +2

Is that the same thing as a footpath we refer to in Australian English?

        • Ah yes. Footpath. Don't know where sidewalk came from haha

  • This sounds great but, as others have mentioned, SBS has only so much bandwidth to share between its channels. How good will this channel look and how will it affect their existing channels? It would be interesting if they were able to screen high bit rate versions of their films at certain off peak times. This way the other channels would be less affected during peak times while those people that valued image quality could watch at the off-peak times.

    • +1

Viceland SD (MPEG-2) is being scrapped freeing up CH32 for World Movies HD (H264) - thats some of the bandwidth, the rest relies on H264 and not all channels needing maximum bandwidth at the same time.

      • This is good news. I'm definitely feeling happier about this now. Thanks.

  • Nice one, OP.

    SBS - Sex Before Soccer

    • Haven't heard SBS referred to that for some years now. I have been watching SBS TV since day 1 in 1980 and I think "Soccer Before Sex" (as it was referred to backed then) dropped out of the lexicon in the early noughties (pardon the pun).

SBS is awesome for a free-to-air channel, there's actual quality programs on most of their channels.

I was just channel surfing the other day and saw they were playing Babel. It's the fish time in years I've been able to watch a decent movie apart from Netflix and other online sources.

    • +1

Since 7Food Network started and grabbed most of the programs from SBS. SBS Food has gone way down hill. Mostly its just endless repeats of The Cook and The Chef. With a few other shows sprinkled here and there.

      • +2

I think the justification there was that sbs food was grabbing those shows basically for free and channel 7 realized that gap and decided to pay a bit more and poach all their stuff.

So now sbs is going in a direction where channel 7/9/10 doesnt dare follow - getting cheap overseas movies.

I wish a portion of my income wasn't forcibly taken from me to pay for this thing I don't use

    • +4

Well that's not how a democracy is supposed to work.

A portion of your income is used for the benefit of the majority. It's not about you, it's about everyone! This is why we alternate from one hopeless party to the other hopeless party every four years, because they tell YOU what YOU want to hear until they are elected. Vote for the benefit of everyone and eventually you will benefit too.

      • Actually, that is how democracy is supposed to work. User pays. What you're describing is socialism, which has never worked.

        • actually democracy is not linked at all directly in that way… and its clearly failed as well.

          • @petry: Democracy has failed? You've made yourself look foolish.

            • @Wardaddy: no-one votes anymore unless they are legally required or threatened - that's a fact.

              • @petry: Voting is not compulsory in USA or UK, but the elections still go on. But I'll agree that if voting were not compulsory in Australia Labor would never get back in again.

                • @Wardaddy: both countries despite being aware of reducing voter participation - which in itself is a sign of dissatisfaction with the democratic process- have implemented swathes of legislation disqualifying native born people from being able to vote, in addition to those changes making it even more difficult to vote.

democracy cannot be said to be working when even certain native born people are deliberately prevented from having a vote.

                  • @petry: Your assertions are simply untrue, nobody is prevented from voting. And voter participation is down because millenials are too lazy and apathetic to vote. That was proven convincingly with Brexit. Your obviously on some kind of crusade to try to prove that democracy doesn't work, so what is your alternative? A dictatorship? Let me guess, with you calling the shots?

                    • @Wardaddy: Your ignorance is no excuse for calling me names implicitly. I'm not on any crusade either.

I suggest you look up pre brexit voting changes by Ms May's Home Office for the facts on English voting eligibility especially for Brexit.

Of course you are not interested in facts only name calling anyone who doesn't agree with your take on politics.

It was the liberals who introduced Border tax - effectively another 10% gst slug - a regressive tax designed to help fund the latest budget, and skew domestic markets on an island nation. Bizarre how the tv ads omit that….

Maybe readup 'The plans followed a court battle spearheaded by the second world war veteran Harry Shindler, who fought in the Battle of Anzio in Italy in 1944. The 95-year-old, who moved to Italy to be near his grandson in 1982, has been unable to vote in the UK since 1997 but cannot vote in Italy either…
the constitution minister Chris Skidmore assured Shindler and …….promised “this (tory )government will not deny them the opportunity to have their say in how the country is governed”. He also revealed that the government estimated “a further 3 million British citizens resident overseas will be enfranchised”.

Another broken promise by May's tory government… brexit was a triumph of vote manipulation.

                      • @petry: Please feel free to continue your socialist rant, I'm done with you. Your comments are irrelevant to the issue that was being discussed, and show that your only interest is in attacking democracy and capitalism.

                        • @Wardaddy: the only person who has used the word socialism is you - you clearly see socialism as the root of all evil while trotting out ignorant unfounded attacks against anyone who expresses a different view to you.

Yeh, well as a pacifist, s portion of my income (taxes) is used to pay for price escalating stealth fighters, sub-standard, undermanned submarines and politicians perks. I don't get any use out of those.

In a liberal democracy, our taxes are for the benefit of the herd. They are meant to benefit us all whether we use them or not.

To take your specious argument, that is why we are not offered the benefit of cherry picking what we want and what we don't use.

A fit and healthy person may not need a hospital now, however if they became sick or injured tomorrow, would it be fair if they opted in at that moment for these services (Ambulance, hospital etc), and then opt out later when they are well again?

Also, without SBS (or the ABC) providing a publicly funded independent news service, would most Australians appreciate receiving their news from Newscorp, or Google, Facebook et al aggregating news for us to consume.

Good luck sorting out you utopian ideals ;)
