Recently Got The NBN HFC Was Wondering What Router Should I Get for It. No Budget

Recently got the Nbn and found out that the router the came with it was a bit dodgy ( Netcomm NF17ACV VDSL/ADSL Dual Band Router ) and was thinking to replacing it. Now i'm just wondering what router should i get that is compatible with nbn box as well as a far reaching signal. I don't have a budget but i'm willing to pay any amount needed. A couple have caught my eye and was wondering if they were compatible with Nbn?

  • What is wrong with your current router?

    • Signal keeps dropping out

      • What are your signal levels?

        • 3 bars but the signal's quite unreliable

  • May be it is router issue, ask your isp give you a new one?

    • They've said that I can send it back, but have to pay for a upgrade and delivery fee if it don't have any problem with it. I don't want to go through the hassle, plus i wound much rather pay a premium if it future proofs it.

      • Are you living in house or unit? if house single or double stories?

        • double stories

@AmeJaieXD: get one of the mesh wifi system.

Search Tenda, reasonable price with excellent coverage for less than $150

if you buy single powerful router may cost you over $300

ISP routers are trash. I got a Nighthawk R7000 3 years ago. It was a massive upgrade over the supplied modem. Altough the router signal isn't as strong as it used to be so I might start looking for an upgrade.

  • Same situation bought the nighthawk 500 and dropped my plan to make up for the cost of the router. Definitely increased the range by a couple bars but is it worth the $$$. Still definitely better than the netgear wifi
extender. I'm with spinel, no problems with the service at all.

Also recommend a mesh system. I'm in a double storey house, have the Netgear Orbi system (RBK50) and it works a treat.

  • I have a Telstra TG799Vac bridged to the Ubiquiti EdgeRouterX. I am on FTTN. Telstra modem is $15 on gumtree. ERX is around $50'ish (i think) i bought on special.

  • I grabbed a TPLink AC 3150 for my HFC and love it. Got it in a 20% off ebay promo for under $200. Great value for money and a tonne of features. The Wifi is really strong from one end of my house to the other.

  • I would highly recommend the Ubiquiti Edgerouter ER-8-XG and getting some access points:

  • I have a TP-Link Deco M5 mesh system. Works very well in a long narrow house with two units. I just turned off the wireless on the ISP modem and connected it by ethernet at one end. Three of the M5 units are recommended for a two story house.

  • Netcomm routers have terrible wifi.

Highly recommend the Asus range starting with this model

Another vote for Netgear Orbi here - with HFC, you only need the WAN port so don't need a modem/router, just a modem. You could look at the other ones like Velop, Google WiFi, Tenda or Eero too, pick what you like.

    • Can you please explain why just a modem would be needed? I'm changing to NBN soon and want to work out what type of modem I need for FTTN. Found out that no ADSL modems work so will have to get rid of my Netgear modem.

Sorry that should have said just a router, not a modem/router.

For FTTP/FTTC/HFC, the nbn connection device provides a LAN port out that can be connected to the WAN port on a router.

For FTTB/FTTN, nbn don't provide an in premises device and a VDSL modem is required.

        • Ah I see. So what VDSL modems would you recommend? We don't need anything fancy as we just use WiFi for mobiles and Netflix on TVs.

  • Which ISP? TPG/iiNet/Internode require specific features.

  • I also have an Orbi RBK50 and it's great.
