Bosch Dishwasher - just outside of 2yr warranty period - anyone have experience arguing ACL for white goods?

Hi

I bought a Bosch SMS50E32AU Freestanding Dishwasher on 30/9/16. Bosch machines have two year warranty so I am about 7 months out of warranty.

The error code I get is E:25, failed to drain water and likely a failed drain pump. I checked and nothing seems to be blocking the impeller so think the pump is dead.

I would have reasonably expected the pump to last longer than this.

I'm wondering if people have had success arguing this point with Bosch (or another white good brand) and claim that the product failed to meet ACL standards? Otherwise given that it was a $660 washing machine, I'm also thinking of cutting my losses now, and get a new machine, as the call out fee and the part could easily cost $400 I assume.

Thanks

    Have you cleaned the filters?

If you have then ACL should cover you.

If they play hard ball after threats you might have to learn how to hand wash while you got through the fair trading and tribunal process though

How long do you reasonably expect the pump to last? The line has to be drawn somewhere.

People talk about the good old days of white goods lasting 10 or more years. I would've expected (but I could be misguided since white goods are not my thing) that 5 years is reasonable.

Well, seeing as the ATO guideline for depreciating the dishwasher is an effective life of 10 years, I would expect a lot closer to 10 than 2 years.

I wouldn't pay to get them to come out. I bought a TV from Samsung that was $2750 when I bought it. At the time it broke down similar tv was $700 to replace (Ozbargain deal 40%off). The call out was $120-$150 which included the first 30 mins of labour. The part i suspected was broken (T-con Board) was $450 + second 30 mins of labour to replace it($90). I got the quote before getting them to come out. They wouldn't even quote me on the part as I had to be a technician to buy the parts apparently. I told them I was an electrician and gave them my companies ABN to get a quote on the part. I did the maths and figured out it wasn't worth the call out. I google the steps on how to replace it. I ordered a fake T-con board of Aliexpress for $60 and changed it myself. The Tv has been working fine for 3+ years. Yes there is some blur when watching fast paced scenes but other than that its great. I say try and get them to come out for free. If it doesn't work get the part of eBay aliexpress and fix it yourself.

Why argue? Be polite, call up & explain the situation. Don't mention acl or accc straight away. They may send someone out and still cover you under warranty, it's worked for me.

I would double check all connections, make sure nothing is being blocked, even reset the machine if possible. Otherwise you will be charged call out fee wether you're covered by warranty or not.

Request that it is fixed and if they refuse then contact Consumer Affairs in your state.

  • Bosch aren't extremely strict with warranty dates, have a go.

Ask politely. It's out of warranty unless you paid for some extended one. Should last longer than 2years. Did you regularly use the cleaner to get rid of any gunk and do any required maintenance. I suspect maybe not. ImO these things are always forgotten. It's not always the manufacturers fault. Try Asko. Believe they are meant to be a good brand.

  • I have found that Samsung will often repair white goods out of warranty.

just outside of 2yr warranty period

Not really 'just' you are 6 months out or 25% over the warranty period.

The error you're seeing is a most likely a blocked pump.

Have you pulled the dishwasher fliters apart and given it a good clean? Also check the outlet hose isn't blocked that connects the s-bend. etc

I had Bosch cover the parts and labour for a dishwasher that was just under 3 years old. It literally died one morning and I called the nearest Bosch Approved repairer who came out and confirmed the control module was gone. They provided a written quote of $640 to replace it and charged $150 for the call out and time to diagnose the issue.

I contacted Bosch and completed a customer resolution form and sent this back with the original tax invoice for the dishwasher and a copy of the repair quote. As it was a Bosch Approved Repairer they couldn't argue against the quote. Bosch immediately went on the defensive and focused only on the warranty but if you just push it politely and ignore any manufacturers warranty and base it purely on the ACL you will get there. I pushed for a new dishwasher and Bosch eventually offered to cover the cost of the work and also refunded the initial $150 call out charge. The actual local Bosch repair guy was fantastic so try and keep them onside if you can.

  • Bosch customer service is pretty good in my experience…Mine dishwasher was out of warranty as well like Stevie67 - probably about 4-5months…they sent a guy who fixed it and then post that himself called someone and said we wont charge you anything.

  • Thanks for all the comments and help. Based on the feedback I think there is enough precedent to justify giving Bosch customer service a chance, before writing off the dishwasher then :)
