It would help if you included where you are planning to wear this jacket, what kind of temperatures you will encounter, etc

Dependable brands include North Face, Patagonia, Marmot, Canada Goose, Fjallraven

    • Agree - is this a circumstance you can't wear a thermal base layer?

I like these, warm but light, preferably when on sale:

  • uniqlo has some waterproof puffy jackets

Something like a Uniqlo down jacket under a lightweight rain/wind proof jacket can be a fairly economical, packable & re-usable approach (You can wear either individually or both together). With a merino base layer it's good down to -10 or so, if you're going colder than that you might need a heavier down jacket.

  • lol

  • these aren't very ozbargain friendly but
    moncler
    canada goose

    • Canada Goose prices have steadily creeped into 'fashion' territory. They're warm, but not 10x warmer than a Fjallraven or Macpac. 90% of the Canada Goose premium comes from that shoulder patch. You're basically buying a puffer version of a Supreme tee.

  • Gender? What do you consider a jacket?

Assuming male, Eddie Bauer is my "go-to" brand for north western gear, consider:

In increasing price / ruggedness. Pretty much the best brand in my experience.

Aldi ski sale - go to Aldi, try one, buy one - you have 60 days to make sure it's warm enough for you.

  • I bought a coat on clearance from Rivers for $10. wore it to the snow. only wore a t-shirt underneath it as it was very warm.

  • Uniqlo down jacket paired with a Heattech undershirt.

  • I'd say a good under-layer (silk or cotton) + a good wool-based jacket. Wool keeps you warm — even if it gets wet.

(Lived for 15 years in the US mountains, routine temps -20 to -30 degrees F for weeks at a time).

  • I would recommend Helly Hansen. It is quite good brand
