Going crazy with freeview TV for mum (93 years living at home with me)
We do not have a TV arial as we don't get reception and every day we are searching Freeview programs… over and over again.. does anyone use Freeview TV are there any tips to making this easier… frustration levels are high… playlist maybe if that is possible?

  • Get the weekend newspaper with the tv guide in it?

Would imagine it lists all FTA viewing, which is effectively freeview

  • I don't understand what problem you're presenting. If you don't have an aerial, how are you watching Freeview? Are you watching it on the internet? Is the problem just that you don't have a program guide? There are a few program guide apps in the app stores, and there are daily and weekly printed guides in newspapers and possibly magazines.

If you're making your 93yo mother watch TV via a laptop or something similar, no wonder the frustration levels are high!

Are you in a place where you can't put up a TV antenna? Do you own the property or rent? I thought that TV reception had to be provided for rental properties - my daughter had no problem getting her landlord to put up a TV antenna.

Sorry. We have Freeview app on phone and that is how we choose and change programs. We are using internet to get her TV. We cannot have an aerial as we don't get reception. We are always chopping between programs but it mum is on her own she is stuck watching a channel until someone is home to change it for her. I was hoping to find a way to set up a playlist for her.

Buy 3 extra tvs, set each to a different channel, and tell her to turn off the ones she doesn’t want to watch?

    • Buy one for each room and tell her this is the Movies Room and this is the News Room and this is the Documentaries Room mum.

  • You are, clear now from your comment above, looking for the full scheduling functionality of guide on the TV.
May need to code your own app for that, I think.
Option, otherwise, at bottom of page, in third link above, but reminders maybe of little use if your Mum unable to change the channel herself.

I was going to suggest that you train a dog to bite her when new season of MAFS comes on ;)
Still a good idea, just in general..

If as per profile, you are anywhere even near Sydney, would need to be in a pretty shocking blackspot for high-gain aerial & masthead amplifier useless to provide a usable signal*. Even an amplified indoor antenna may work, if haven't tried that, yet?

*Even if installer (with a field-strengh meter) has to point aerial in unexpected direction in order to catch a reflected signal.

Other options more expensive, ongoing, and probably wouldn't be keen on those.

    Best of luck!
    :)

  • You can buy a TV streaming box, such as the Vodafone TV, install Kodi then follow this guide to set up the freeview channels (or this guide for combined AU+NZ channels). Then your mum can use the remote that comes with the TV box to navigate the channels.

But before you buy any hardware, you can install Kodi on your PC and follow the set up guides, have a play to see whether it would suit your needs.
