What's The Deal Breaker For The Phone For You?

few things that is deal breaker for me are Battery Life and Compass while NFC is deal for alot of people but i can get around that. Network Band aka B28 or Bands that needed for international travel like japan/USA..ect.

never into Camera and only using it for stuff like receipt or things need to be remembered…saw some ads 48MP or 3-4 camera and it doesn't sell for me which i don't really cared.

Small screen. Currently use mi Max 3, 6.9"
    Sometimes feel like need bigger.

    • +17

opposite for me, smaller the better
I find it very uncomfortable with even a "medium" in my pocket
      .

      • +3

i just upgraded my iphone SE to another iphone SE with more space
i dont even like iphones but small is good

        • +1

You should look into the pixel 3. My sibling has it and is great for one handed use

          • @CaptainNewspeak: Hi, I have one, and I have massive hands (XL Gloves at work). I'm not sure what you classify as single handed use, but for me, the pixel 3 requires two hands for most stuff. You can hold and scroll with your thumb (and reach the other side of the screen with your thumb). But you can't hold on one hand and type everything with your thumb.
It's a great phone though. I love it.

            • @kabammi: I use SwiftKey, and can one handed type on my v30+, and the same function is on the pixel 3.but you're right, it's subjective and wholly depends on the user. But id just say the pixel 3 (not the xl) is probably the closest flagship equivalent of the SE.

    • I hear ya brother.

    • How is the max 3? I have a max 2 + rn5pro. I'm using the note 5 mostly, however I miss the gigantic screen when I have both hands free.

    Must run iOS

once you buy in to the eco system you're kinda screwed. Worst thing is its not just phones doing this.

      • +3

Yep. Better quality apps, integrated hardware and software, regular OS updates for years, security and stability. I definitely feel iScrewed every day. And if you decide you don't like it one day, you can just change. It's not an irreversible proposition.

        • +3

I didn't mean it like that. I meant it more as "I've invest $$$ in apps for this, I don't want to rebuy them on droid."

        • Not strictly true that you can just change.

If you're an iphone user, you're likely to have an iPad, a MacBook, Apple watch, airpods etc.

There are Android versions of those products too yes but all of the apple ones work much better if you have an iPhone.

Not saying being in an walled garden is bad. In many ways you're locked in because it is a better experience overall. But it is what it is and it's naive to think that it's easy to just change whenever you want.

        • -3

OS updates for years. What a joke. I had the original IPAD and iPhone 3GS. Don't talk about updates for years. Perfectly working devices, solid hardware! But grandfathered deliberately and made redundant and unusable by Apple. Apple are bastards. I'll never buy stuff from them again. I've been with Android since, loved it, and will never go back.
I still love my iPod 5th gen using Rockbox though. Again, solid apple hardware, sheite software (but I replaced it).

          • @kabammi: And Android just makes itself redundant after about a year of use…(if that)

    • +3

Run while you can - you'll never look back when you discover the Android world.

It no longer becomes a "im going to restrict everything you do to iOS and ensure you have troubles connecting to standard competitors" (Apple) to "connect with the world, apart from iOS" (Google / Android).

Embrace innovation - dont restrict it.

      • +2

I used to own android before I got my iPhone, but everything I use nowadays is Apple so the seamlessness is nice, I would go android or heaven forbid windows phone if I ever went back to windows, but again I've invested money in to the iOS/MacOs eco system.

      • +1

I've always had an Android phone but I disagree with this. Apple just do some things better and the same with Android. Both have their pros and cons.

        • Im not saying Apple dont do things well, but when they restrict everything to their platform as a means of hindering yourself and other competitors, there the problem lies.

Google has faults, sure, but they absolutely do not restrict merely to Google-related items. They embrace and encourage innovation instead. You have a Mac? Enjoy having to do EVERYTHING iOS related.

  • Why is a compass on a phone a deal breaker for you?

    • +3

I'm with OP. Compass is much superior to GPS for skymap and hiking apps.

      • Yes, but you may be forgetting OzBargain's key demographic, with love for gaming, increasingly VR/AR -

        Proximity Sensor;
        Accelerometer and gyroscope;
        Digital compass:

The digital compass that's usually based on a sensor called the magnetometer and provides mobile phones with a simple orientation in relation to the Earth's magnetic field. As a result, your phone always knows which way is North so it can auto rotate your digital maps depending on your physical orientation.

        Barometer;
        Biometrics.

        Augmented & Virtual Reality

The highly accurate sensors detailed above, when combined with the powerful CPU & GPU's of modern smart phones, allow very realist and responsive Virtual Reality applications to be created. When the sensors are combined with a smartphones camera they facilitate Augmented Reality applications.

Could be the reason in OP's case.

Before notches 6.4" screen was too big for me.

Not sure what the screen size cut off would be now that we have less bezel in the notch era.

  • Dual Sim
    SD Card Expansion
    NFC
    Latest Bluetooth and wifi standards
    Finger Print
    AOD
    USB C
    Front Firing Speakers
    Headphone Jack
    Fast Wireless Charging
    No Chinese Brand

    • Are these what it must have? Or are these the list of deal breakers?

About the only thing I care about on that list is NFC. Everything else there isn’t a deal breaker for me. And the “no Chinese brands”, I’m guessing you mean phones like Xiaomi or elephone type brands, because a great majority of mobile phones are made in China, so it’s hard to escape.

    • +1

does a phone like this even exist? Always On Display is only on Samsungs, i believe? And Samsung's only have "hybrid-sim" instead of dual-sim, so you have to choose between 2nd sim and an SD card expansion. And they dont have front-firing speakers?
Maybe Galaxy S11 will have all those features :)

      • Always On Display is only on Samsungs, i believe?

My LG G5 has an always on display.

    sd card expansion!

Must be 256GB for the monthly cost of a 64GB.

gotta use the wife to sign the contract too.

Must blame someone else because you signed a contract without reading it

Love the tie-ins you get around here.

Me, I'm into high yield investment phones ;)

I'm still using an OPO for personal use and I love her. I've called her Rosie and she just won't die. For work , I usually get my pick of the latest ones but Rosie is my one true love. I couldn't love her more and I will shed a tear the day she goes to phone heaven.

    • +2

      Whole lotta Rosie

She ain't exactly pretty but she stole my heart.

    Must have 3.5mm jack.
    Not an apple.
At least 2gb ram (3gb for the next phone).

Its really between $300-500 most cost effective phone.

    • +1

Pixel3a comes very close to that. Price is $650 though. Google added back the audio jack for the pixel 3a, even though they took it away from the pixel 3. 4gb Ram. Cracking camera, not that op cares. But it's a neat unit. This on sale will be a good value buy.

  • +1

    Paying for it.

Got a free galaxy s7 from the note 7 debacle

    • I didn't realise they were giving free phones as compensation. I would have been tempted to track one down..

      • +2

I bought the note 7 directly from samsung website.

When the recall happened they provided an S7 in the interim.

In between the first and 2nd recall they didn't come and collect the S7 after they provided a refund on the note 7. I wasn't going to remind them.

  • Reversible charger lead. Recently went from lightning cable (6s+) to micro usb (Nova 3i). So annoying having to get the charger lead orientation correct. From next phone on it is lightning or USB C only.

  • +4

Lack of operating system updates. Battery size less than 3000mah, no headphone jack, no NFC and probably no Band 28.

    • As “meme” worthy as B28 is, I will take a phone from my buy list based on that one as well. I live in a rural area, and the coverage is just woefully bad without it.

      • I'm a sailor. I need the phone to work even 20-30km offshore, or hopping from Victoria to Tasmania. Only B28 (700MHz) does that. Would buy a Redmi Note 7 or Note 7 Pro to replace my lovely Note 3 (esp now they have USB-C), but no B28. Sigh.

what do you expect for more than 300 lol

      • I expect a phone to make calls, txt message, play music, browse ozbargain and take photos.
All can be achieved with a <$300 phone.

        • yeah if you like seeing pixels in your photos

  • +3

    Those which don’t run iOS

  • what you looking for in flagship phone? it seems pretty much you can get for Mid Range around $500…

Good Batteries, Dual Sims, 6.2-6.4 inch, Compass, NFC, Band 28, headphone jack…

  • It was battery life for me, I had an S5 for 3 years and had changed batteries and still didn't make a huge difference. It was time to upgrade to a newer phone with better battery life and decent software. I had settled on a S8, I think it was a good choice despite losing the removable battery feature.

  • +2

Removable battery of reasonable capacity and decent screen.

  • +2

Must have a home button for me. I don't really like the idea of swiping like on the iPhone x. I'm holding onto my iPhone 8 plus for as long as I can..

  • Definitely the battery. After running the latest HTC for years I now use a duel sim Moto.

  • +1

Unremovable crap that are not critical to phone operation.

  • 6.99"

  • I love you my iPhone and IOS ecosystem but I hate the fact that it can't record phonecalls when I want to, might switch to Android due to this reason.

  • Beauty mode.

    • You can download Snapchat on any platform

  • Android
    Big screen
    Biometric login face/fingerprint
    NFC for PayPass
    Good camera and processing software

Went apple for the warranty , if there is an issue with it you swap it out and get a new phone.
Nothing more annoying than waiting weeks to get a phone repaired whilst using a sub par loan phone.

    • +3

Typing this from my replacement iphone SE. Old one had 1 month left of two year warranty and a broken lock button.

Took all of 20 minutes and I was out the door.

    Pointless Post

Everyone has different priorities and there are plenty of phones around to satisfy everyones requirements

  • Must have AUX

  • Droppable. Dust and water resistant.
    Currently have a cat s61

  • +1

I really like my iPhone 6s and would keep using it except the cameras are really dated now. It can't take photos in anything but perfect light. No low light photos. Everything else about this phone is fine.

  • A Always On Amoled plus a modern night pics /super optical, [Pixel][P30]-type cam at midrange pricing would do the trick.
Jack has a place but SIMs must go, the sooner integrated SIM chips the better, Dual-SIM Standby is must-have till then.

5G New Radio def(when power efficient) and ax wifi. Platform update 11 through 13 to get a solid phone life cycle+resale.

  • wondering worth to get flagship phone that cost over $700+? most of the stuff can get it for mid range $500 latest release not old flagship like s8-huwaei mate 10..ect.
