Looking for a Qantas Points Credit Card Advice

Hi All,

i'm hoping i will be able to narrow down or choose a credit card based on answers i get from money savvy people on here.

i currently have the AMEX Ultimate Card but im sick of places not accepting it.

im looking for a Visa or Mastercard which gives me qantas points but…
- no citibank cards (or cards run by citi)
- maybe at least 1 point per dollar
- no "double card" thing (where you get 2 different cards like amex and visa)
- my monthly spend is about $3000

ive already been to the qantas cards page and had a look, are these my only options? if so, how is the HSBC Platinum Qantas card?

edit:
also, how does balance transfer work? ive never done this before because i tend to keep the credit card for a long time and only switch when its paid off but the amex card is annoying and wouldn't mind getting rid of it asap.

for example, when i do balance transfer, do i just do it through the new card vendor and they take care of closing my other account?

Check here for current offers. https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/earning-points/c…

You'll earn a lot more points on bonus point offers rather than focusing on points per dollar. E.g. Westpac $50 first year fee, 0.5 points per dollar but 60,000 points after you spend $3k

    • yeah, i started with the amex ultimate card for the bonus 100,000 points plus the lounge visits and annual flight credit but after a couple years with the card…im sick of amex not being accepted plus i have never used the lounge visits or the flight credit…

westpac offer is good for bonus points but its only 0.5 points after that and im looking for a long term card.

  • Are you looking for a long term card to keep or ones to churn for points?

If the later then as above you'll get more points from the signup bonus - so you're probably looking for ones with largest signup bonus (and any other perks) with the lowest (reduced) annual fee (and in your case being able to meet the min spend for the bonus points conditions) - and at $3K per month you probably don't care so much about the points per dollar spent (e.g. I got the Bendigo card during a promotion which only offers 0.6 PPD but came with 80K QFF bonus points with $2.5K spend)

The HSBC card you mention is possibly one of the better long term keep cards since it has a low annual fee and 1 PPD

    • definitely long term card…can't be bothered churning through cards.

  • I have the HSBC card and it's quite good, lacks features but the fee is minimal compared to others, but i'd wait for them to have a points offer as they have in the past

    • thanks. this is definitely one i was looking at but just wondering if there were any other better offers.

      • The qantas premier cards are good for the sign up bonuses, but the annual fee isn't worth it in the long term so would use for nearly a year, and then close it

they are also citi cards…i stay away from citi ever since they bought out coles mastercard. i loved my coles mastercard and had it for years…when citi bought it, there were so many problems from not being able to use the card, not being able to log in, not being able to pay.

when i tried to cancel, they always just sent me around the office before hanging up on me and then not picking up again. when they did answer they kept giving excuses and never cancelling even when they said they would. i only managed to cancel when i lied and told them i needed to cancel because i was going for a home loan.

          • @towfoo: No one ever tells the truth when they call to cancel. You'll know for next time to lead straight up with the home loan excuse.

I've had the ANZ, NAB Qantas and St George cards which all gave Qantas points and 1 pt per $.

ME and the missus are just swapping the NAB Qantas signature CC between us now, its always 90k Qantas points so I get it, additional card for her then cancel after 12 months and she applies. We spend about 100k a year on it between us so points are building up. Its currently $295 fee I think. ANZ was decent, didn't like the St George app but cancelling them all was easy.

AMEX is a bit of a pain and the EFTPOS fees are way higher when accepted.

  • I'd like to hijack this thread and ask if it's worth spending points on domestic flights? I have enough for domestic but doubt I'll ever have enough to use it on an international since I always fly emirates overseas.

    • It is - so long as they haven't jacked up the points required to redeem.

A short flight like Melb to Sydney generally hovers around 8000 points plus fees.

  • Can anyone tell me if I can claim the bonus ff points on Qantas premier cc if I currently hold at Citibank cc? I think qantas CC’s are run by Citibank so… Appreciate it.

  • Check out the Westpac card range, decent earning on spend, they have a couple linked to Qantas
