  • Anyone know how the NS-333B compares with the Audioengine A5+? Can't find anything online.

    • The speakers in this deal are passive speakers (you will need to buy a separate amplifier), the A5+ are active speakers (built-in Amplifier).

      • I see, thanks for the clarification.

        • Therefore the A5+ are priced accordingly (~$500), and are designed as a complete package (therefore much easier to set-up and use).
I would go for powered / active speakers as they are that much more convenient and cheaper overall brand-new (compared to the NS-333B + including the cost of a separate amplifier).

If you are more experienced with ‘Hi-Fi’ & have the spending power, the NS-333BP Floorstanders with the correct separate amplifier would likely offer better sound than the Audioengine A5+.

          • +2

@thebadmachine: Going to have to disagree. As an owner of a similar pair of active speakers, I'd have to say go passive - every time. It's worth having the separation of components. Means you can more easily upgrade, or keep the speakers running when the internal amp / electronics fail.

The weakest part of active speakers is the active amp (and any extra elements that come along with it); it's basically paying less in the short term rather than more for a longer lasting kit.

            • @KaraiPantsu: Yes but it sounded like boku was lacking in knowledge / experience in ‘Hi-Fi’ etc as am I.
So for those who are interested in ease of use and setup (regardless of anything else), I would recommend the simplicity of active.
