Told by Telstra that I must convert to NBN by November 2019!

Have been told that I must convert my current Telstra ADSL+2 ($40/month) service over to the NBN by November 2019.
Telstra advise cost of new service will be $70/month !!
Not a huge user, and currently only use about 20-30% of that download ( 200GB).
Never use landline for phone calls!
Can current NBN users indicate whats the cheapest type plan I can secure and what Telco to deal with?

Thanks for any feedback.

Finder's comparison list is pretty handy.

  • I'm with Mate Communicate, not sure if they are the cheapest but I've had nothing but great experiences with them. I've never noticed speed drops even at peak times althought that might be dependant on my area. Their customer support is also good, I mean they actually reply to emails, no need to call and spend 30 minutes waiting.

don't go the cheapest.. but even though i work for a large telco, i recommend ABB

I second ABB. They'll still have problems as many are actually NBN's problems. At least they don't ask you for you name, DoB, address and describe your problem repetitively just to tell you to restart your modem.

  • you use more with NBN because it will be way quicker and youll browse more of the internet.

    • My experience was while they were converting a local area across, it was outage central. Improved after a few months. It's a pretty big consideration when the phone line depends on it.

  • Been with Tangerine Telecom, cant fault them and no issues reaching out to them on live chat or on the phone. First 6 months $10 off.

  • What do you pay currently, OP?

edit: ah you've just adjusted your post.

Telstra advise cost of new service will be $70/month !!

That's just their bog standard pissy 100MB/month 25Mbps plan. Since you say you don't use landline, forget Telstra.

Why not get a large 4G mobile plan, and ditch the fixed internet all together? E.g. 80GB for $40 per month on optus.

    • +1

depending on the usage and the network.
If OP needs high speed and/or low latency, 4G is out of question.

    • I recommend anyone subjected to FTTN to go with 4G instead.

      • I had FTTN and I was regularly getting 85-90mbps stable with Telstra, I'm using cheap 4g sims now after a 2 year contract wrapping up but a fixed connection is better if you can afford it, the evening slowdown on a Friday night hits the mobile network hard

Exetel seems like the best value, I'm doing the 4g SIM routine with a Kogan modem. A few ISPS are doing sub-$40 plan with 250gb download allowances shaped to 12/1 that might suit you

Sitting pretty with Exetel 4g/12mbps/250 gig for $39.99 - works well with 2300 mhz tower close. Great service.

      • I'd probably jump on it if it had a hard cap

  • Thanks for the useful feedback ……. Exetel plan looks attractive.
I'm only small user & currently get around 6 - 7 mbps at best with ADSL+2 service, so any increase would be a pleasant surprise!
I appreciate that I will use more downloads with NBN service.

    Thanks.
