Bought New Toyota Camry but Had Paint Defects

Hi all,

Wanted to get some advice on my current situation before moving forward with decisions.

I bought a brand new Toyota Camry through CarConnect from Canberra to Melbourne. They use Ceva as transportation service and Intraffic for registration.

Upon delivery of the car, I noticed minor scratches behind all 4 door handles plus small chips/scratches (right and left door plus on the boot near the plate)

I lodged a report (includes drawing and pictures) with Ceva on the spot and the person from Intraffic got in touch straight to send a detailer at my place.

Being just a transportation company I had to take delivery of the car with report lodged.

Detailer buffed off light marks behind the handles but hair lines still present. The chips/scratches couldnt be removed at all after polishing.

The intraffic person then told me to get a quote from a Toyota authorised repair shop which came up to $10k.

When I told him so, he said thats too much and will find out from other paint shops on Monday.

Today went to 2 paint shops which are at my proximity to get an idea.

One told me to get an assesor and get a cash settlement done because its a brand new car and repainting means removal of parts etc.

Second shop told me around 3k for 4 doors and boot.

This situation is kind of stressful and any advice welcome. Would this have been a demo or second hand car, I wouldn't have bothered.

Many thanks.

@spackbace: Not if it's a long term play. If you make more, you sell more now, but the mystique is lost.

When you keep supply low, people decide they want it even more. Of course people who need the car now aren't going to wait, but the consumer who still has a working car and is looking for a new upgrade can wait until they get the one they want.

Toyota makes reliable cars, no question about it. But their cars are far from exciting or fun. I don't know what this car or any other hybrid of theirs does that other EV and hybrid car makes don't already do better. I'm having trouble believing it to be honest, that the car is special and no one makes anything like it. I would say that about most of their range, and we've been a Toyota family since as far back as I can remember. There are a lot of Toyotas in this family. Outside of reliability, I'm not sure what else they excel at.

Who's playing in the EV/Hybrid field at a decent price point? On a Camry, it's around $1500 more than the petrol option to have hybrid.

Toyota already have strong resale values in hybrid cars like the old model hybrid Camrys. As I said, they have no reason to limit the supply because that would limit sales. No one wants to wait 6-7 months for a car (as we recently had a customer who did), so people look to other options.

We're not a high-end super-car company, we don't thrive off lack of numbers creating a stronger desire. We target sales numbers and being #1 wherever possible.

Pics or this thread is a waste of time, there is no scale to the actual damage. It's not a Toyota defect either by the sound of it, its handling of the vehicle post dealer.

anyway how is the car? I've been wanting to get a cheap hybrid. was it ascent sport or sl.

Seems like a lot of the camrys are hybrids now.

What colour is the car? Want to sell it?

  • Second shop told me around 3k for 4 doors and boot.

    Photos?

    $3k ? They're taking the piss - let's see these $3k scratches!

    • Right/left side and boot full repaint they quoted on.

why isn't there any pics? One's perception of 'damage' changes quite considerably in the first 6mths of owning a brand new car.

    Get over it.
Though I do retract that if the marks are very noticable.
