Ridiculously Overpriced Objects Seen for Everyday Things. - Ozripoff

Went past a car dealership- started with oz btw and saw a Corolla Ascent 2012 model for $32k, but it included few years warranty. Just wondering if anyone came up on other rip off items.

Corolla Ascent 2012 model advertised for 32k (realistically worth 10k)

Inspired by this article that captured some of my rip off hates that I steer clear of. Booking fees are totally absurd. It's like paying the company money to pay them more money.

Booking fees are totally absurd. It's like paying the company money to pay them more money.

Hahahah they do sound ridiculous, but I think the key point is not to get tricked into thinking of a cost different because of its label. Always consider the total cost of something, whether part of it is called a booking fee, an online processing fee, a ticket issue fee, etc.

      • +2

Absolutely agree with you. It's the perception though that's it's the price set, then you get additional fees to pay. Had this membership for $135, then on top add admin fee, set up fee as once off, but service fee and 0.2% on going banking fees.

        Like wtf #menocomprehend

    • How do you steer clear of booking fees?

      • Venues sometimes have a box office that you can buy tickets from, without any fees.

Note that some venues just have a ticketek/ticketmaster office onsight as their box office.

        • So pretty much can't avoid for any major events.

The term 'Grinds your gears' grinds my gears on the same level as Mom.

        Son? Is that you?

      • Those terms should be kicked out to the sidewalk.

Cinemas are also notorious for this, with some charging a booking fee of $1.50 per ticket.

I'm surprised the ACCC hasn't cracked down on this. It's flagrant abuse of component pricing laws. Ticketek/Ticketmaster can get away with it, because their fees are 'per booking' so the total cost isn't known up front, but with a per-ticket fee it is known up front and should be included in the advertised price.

or another specific example is RMH home lottery where initially they sold 40k tickets for a 1 in 15 chance to win any prize, 1 in 40k to win the top prize. Over the years the number of tickets has increased to 230k tickets but they still market as 1 in 15 chance to win, just with more junk prizes, now its 1 in 230k to win the house.

      • This irks me like no tomorrow! They are very subtle sometimes which they can get away with and the majority of the population wont notice!

    • Many years ago, I had overseas visitors use the Toll Roads in Brisbane without a tag. They went online to pay, and after paying their account, they were charged $2 to make the payment, after their payment. They would have to pay $2 plus the future $2 charge fee to finalise their account. This was clearly a trap for foreigners.
I dont think this is the case anymore.

NSW has a 55c "video processing" charge when your toll pass doesn't work.

Why do we need toll passes at all in this day and age, when they have video processing technology? Note that Motorcycles don't get charged the video processing fee and don't have to carry a toll pass.

        • I think in Scandinavian countries they don't have tolls at all.
Just spots with big signs, prices, and cameras everywhere. They save heaps of money by not hiring anyone to attend a booth, or to process the payments. It's automated. And they generally roll those savings back to the drivers, so people are always happy to use and pay.

          • @Kangal: Portugal is a nightmare for the inexperienced. I suggest anyone who is thinking about going to Portugal familiarise themselves with how the toll systems works before visiting Portugal. Once you do understand it isn't that painful but it does lead to some angst once you have racked up tolls, without the relevant device/prepayment method, and you aren't sure if you are going to be fined or not. As long as you buy a prepaid card, and contact them, they will usually backdate the card to cover the tolls you have already got. We did this via email as we have virtually no portuguese and wasn't sure how good the English would be for the person who takes the calls.

When people use the beauty mode on their phone to take pics of their kids and then post it on insta with a "How cute is my kid?😍 #cuteAF"

Pleeeease!🙄 If your kid was really cute, you wouldn't need to use the beauty function, would you?

So that, and anything and everything that Donald Trump says or does or posts.

      Otherwise, I'm pretty chill.

Edit: Just realised that neither are rip-offs, although one could argue that having quaismodo for a child AND Donald Trump as President of the free world are bloody rip-offs from life.

I think the world is being ripped off at the moment. Not sure if I believe in a supreme being but if there is one they are, currently, doing a piss poor job.

    • Electricity.

Privatisation has "severely damaged" the economy, according to Rodney Sims, ACCC head, while the morons that voted Laberal voted to continue destroying it by losing their own money to overseas corporations "selling" electricity and not using it to generate internal economic activity which is the "severe damage" part.

These are the same irrational, petty minded idiots that ignored Deloitte Access Economics and former Liberal PM John Howard calling for increases to dole and pension payments because they would rather **** themselves to **** over other Australians than improve the overall economy. Which they benefit would benefit from.
