Where to Buy Good Wool Stuff?

So I live in Canberra atm, and the apparent temp at midday today was -2. I'm from the coast so I'm not equipped for this.

I just spent 3 hrs at the mall looking in all the clothes shops and the only good wool stuff I could find was fashion brands at over $500 for a coat, and over $200 for jumpers.

I just want a decent wool coat to walk to work in and one thick wool jumper to kick around in. You guys have any suggestions?

I bought two light wool/yak jumpers from Muji that are fantastic but they are only lightweight, can't find any heavyweight ones.

They had merino layering items at the aldi snow sale a week or so back. The good stuff is probably gone now but you may as well have a look

  • If you live in Canberra you should invest in a nice coat. They can last decades.

    • Totally! I'd be happy to, but see my reply to garetz below - I'm not sold on the quality of the expensive coats from fashion brands. I do want one to last decades.

    Wool? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Wool! jrowls, there's four places;
There's the Wool Hut, that's on Third.
There's Wool's Are Us, that's on Third, too.
You got Sheer Your Wool There … that's on Third.
Cloud Fluffy Sweet Sheep… Matter of fact, they're all in the same complex…
it's the Wool Complex, down on Third!

    • I believe you have the Wool Complex confused with the Hammock Complex my friend!

  • Good quality clothes these days do not come cheap. Be prepared to pay for something high quality, but you want to last 5-10 years.

The above people do very good quality socks/beanies/scarves that are wool.

    • Yeah I know, but I kind of doubt the quality of the fashion brands coats that are $500. Like, I would pay that much for a good coat but I don't believe there is much of a difference between a $500 coat from a fashion brand vs a $200 coat from a fast fashion brand.

      • I got a pretty good quality coat for less than $200 at one of the end of winter sales. Was marked down by 40 or 50% i believe.

    • Lindner Socks do excellent wool socks. I like their 80% wool ribbed ones for warmer weather and the classic thick ones if it's cold. I found the website descriptions pretty accurate and the sizing spot on.

    • Yeah you're right. Buying with high quality is more practical thing to do. I'll check that out. thanks

Frankly, I would start with looking at an Op shop.

    • The op shops here never have anything good in my experience. I've been a lot of times too, it's all garbage.

      • It depends, ive got some decent stuff but you do need to look. YMMV.

try New Zealand Natural Clothing Co.
    https://nznaturalclothingshop.co.nz/

When i was over there last month I bought a Possum/Merino jacket (it was more a zippered cardigan) for $350 and a Merino/Cashmere jumper for $170. Best purchase ever.

  • There are other wool types that are more insulating than the merino, I like alpaca. Alpaca is exxy though. I have eczema that flares up when skin is dry and alpaca doesn't irritate skin like merino wool does. Invest in a down jacket maybe when there are sales (EOFY or mid season sales or Aldi sales). Or if you don't mind vintage, maybe look on gumtree for a 2nd hand fur coat like sheepskin. Fur is bulky though, but very warm. Also make sure you insulate hands, head, feet as that can help too.

    • I don't think I'm 'extra' enough to pull off a fur coat lmao.

And I'm not wedded to any type of wool either!

I would be looking for good thermals to wear under your normal clothes. You can wear them out or around the house and they aren’t bulky.

    • I don't want to wear thermals under my work clothes tho, cause it's hot AT work. It's just for the walk in or going to get coffee or lunch or to a meeting.

    • Where to get good and cheap thermals?

  • OP by coat for walking to work do you mean a traditional wool trench coat? You might need to be more specific in the style of coat you’re after.

    • Just a warm coat! I don't really mind what style, I haven't decided yet. Not as massive as a Drizabone for example, but longer than a suit jacket.

      • Ok. I reckon your best bet at a really good quality wool coat at a decent price is a military coat of some sort from an overseas army surplus. Something like a US Navy Peacoat.

        • Otherwise if you do relax your stance on wool I noticed this Gore Tex down jacket from North Face on sale at Caliroots for $480AUD shipped (with 15% off code for signing up to their newsletter). Same style of jacket used to sell in Aus for around $1000. Made of Gore-Tex so it will last forever.

          • @Cheaplikethebird: I already have a puffy jacket that is plenty warm enough, it's just that I don't think they look very good haha. Thanks tho!

        • Have you seen the kind of shipping fees for stuff like that…its only cheap for people in the US.

I have purchased 4 jumpers from Blarney Woollen Mills in Ireland - one when I was there, and then 3 online.

    https://www.blarney.com/sale/

Normally around $200 each, but keep an eye on the sales, I've usually seen them for around $80. They're great, very warm and good quality. Also, I live in Canberra - they go well here.

  • Was going to say icebreaker outlet but I don't think they have one in Canberra.

I would say any old jacket with Wool thermal underwear layer would be just as good as a heavy coat if you're trying to save money.

I have several great woollen coats and all were purchased from Op Shops for less than $10. Always worth a look!

  • Op shops are good.

For good quality natural materials online. Delivery is pretty quick now try Woolovers.

If you are a male, then gazman.com.au they a re having a pretty big sale on at the moment. A few warm looking jackets,

I posted a deal for a 100% wool boulson jacket the other day 99.95 down from 299. Which I bought But they just started a sale today and it's now 74.95. :( but oh well.

  • Why a wool coat though? In Melbourne everyone wears either light or medium loft down jackets, e.g. https://www.kathmandu.com.au/search/down-jackets-vests/heli-…. I think they work pretty well.
