24 Hour Surveillance Camera

I'm looking for a 24 hour surveillance camera, just something I can plug into 240v and download later if need be. Would prefer something that works ok at night as I'm trying to find out whats attacking my poultry. I don't need wifi or bluetooth maybe something that has a memory card slot.

Trail cam would work well for catching whatever is getting into your hen house. Works by capturing motion, so it only records when it sees or senses something in front of the camera. Fairly inexpensive, run on batteries and record both photos and video to SD cards.

Wouldn’t the camera end up being on a roll all the time because the poultry would trigger it anyway. Just a thought. Probably PoE cameras like xiaomi and some temporary cables in the backyard might work. The camera could be later used for home security.

Aldi had trail cams on sale a while back for $150 odd. As of a few weeks agommany stores still had stock (in the glass security boxes up front), and it might be discounted now.

        they still have them there

    • I have a place I can plug into mains power and just want an endless loop so I can check it after a massacre.

A lot depends on what quality you want and what frame rate you want, so you will need to think of storage space.

You will need a light source, preferably infrared so it doesn’t scare the predator off. A flood light might deter it from even coming in, as these animals like to hunt in the dark. Don’t know how 24 hour light would affect your chooks though.

Do you need to capture the whole massacre or just the animal that is doing it? Because 8 hours overnight could be a lot of footage to go over. That’s why a trail cam might be good.

You may be better with security camera if you want to record hours at a time. A cheap DVR/NVR and a good quality security camera might be more applicable.

And you have to think about your end result. What are you hoping to find out? If it’s a wild dog or fox, then what? Or are you hoping to catch the neighbors dog in the act. You may be better laying out dog/fox/possum traps or better securing your chooks then you are at trying to catch photos of it.

        • Just want to make sure it is a fox and how it's getting in. Can you recommend a model or something available on eBay?

@Ron025: Leave it with me. I’ll have a search around tomorrow at work and see what we use there.

    Do you suspect fowl play?

    • Maybe someone is playing a yolk on OP.

Please stop. You're clearly egging him on.

  • Its a fox.

    What now?

What sound does a fox make?

  • I saw the culprit today so not as urgent now. Can you purchase a wireless camera that you can watch realtime on a monitor without having to record so I can just look over from my study desk and see what is happening in the pen.
