  • If you buy second hand, you'll be alright. I probably wouldn't buy brand new if I were you.

  • I heard a lot of people are trying to sell their Huawei phones. So make sure you ask for a big discount.

That said, not sure these are rumours. Google is cutting off access to most services.

@KnowingNothing: All this Android talk is getting me agitated. I'm a Senior Android developer. You have a wrong idea about security updates. First of all hacking or finding vulnerabilities in Android is a very tough job, you need to have years of experience in hacking to know where to even look. Android has become exponentially secure since the release of Marshmallow. So the chance of your phone randomly getting hacked because you didn't have the latest update is so low you have a better chance of winning a big lottery. If this was a fairly common issue I can assure you the media would not hold back on reporting about it. Even if someone hacked your phone via a Android vulnerability, what they could do with it would be limited.

Secondly, you don't need a hacker to hack your phone. Those trusty apps you've installed like Facebook are tracking all your information from right under your nose and you are in fact giving away all your information by installing these apps. I can create a decoy location tracking app within 2 hours, that doesn't look like a tracking app and sends me your location regularly without notifying you. You will never notice and the phone will never warn you.

Thirdly, did you forget that phone manufacturers are awfully slow at releasing system updates? It could be months before you receive security updates. Usually you'll just receive the new version of the OS itself.

So don't talk about "security updates". Go ahead and buy the Huawei phone if you like the hardware. If you really really want frequent updates, buy a Pixel. It's Google's own phone.

  • Depends on your upgrade cycle. If you will be upgrading in 2 years time, then I don't see any major issues. You will still have android 9.0, and the latest versions of apps. You don't need the official apps store to install google apps either.

I would still wait until the price drops, as it will the longer this goes on and carriers are;t selling phones.

  • I wouldnt buy it at full retail, if you can get a huge discount, might be worth it.

i have the mate 20 pro and based on the current climate i wouldn't be recommending buying one at this time. Too much unknown risk and possibilities of google taking a strong stance against them

If you get a good price, go for it.

The Huawei P30 gives you top-end processor, and a good screen and camera. It's missing most of the flair of the flagships, so why not stick to more midrange phones, for added features and lower price?
    There's the:
    ASUS Zenfone 6, Lenovo Z6, ZTE Axon10 Pro, Nubia Redmagic 3, Meizu 16s, BlackShark 2, Xiaomi Mi9, Xiaomi Mix3, and Redmi K20 Pro…
…if you value the top-end processor that much. However, if you want the top-end processor AND a fleshed-out device you're going to have to look at:
OnePlus 7 Pro, Sony Xperia 1, LG G8, and Samsung S10-variants.

I wouldn't say to anyone buy this or don't buy that - it's a matter of individual choice.

All I know, in the current economic climate, despite great quality hardware coming from China and with all respect to their designers and companies who produce it, I'll be avoiding Chinese products for the next 1-2 years, fearing US sanctions. Few years ago it was ZTE (luckily they don't produce mobiles), now Huawei - great phones, but thanks to US soon without proper software support…

Who's going to be next? No idea. I'm sticking to Samsung.

      zte does produce mobiles.

No, you should not buy any Huawei phones now, unless you got a very good bargain(very unlikely). There's a sudden drop in demand for Huawei phones, so lots of people takes this opportunity to buy Huawei phone at crazy discount. This would not work because any non-retarded person would rather just keep the phone until there is certainty towards Huawei phone.

If you don't believe me, try to do some quick search on Gumtree or any other 2nd hand market place, there are more people trying to buy P30 pro at ridiculous price but no one actually selling their it. There are some who still try to sell their p30 pro but with normal price ($1000++). So I'd say just wait 2-3 months and see if you still want Huawei phones.

    • unable to find any one selling a p30 pro at a ridiculous price.

disappointed as i was going to purchase one

  • I notice Optus don't likes the P30 series, and Telstra have them 'out of stock' - guess that's the end of Huawei for a while.

Apple will catch up and have the amazing zoom on their next phone, then the ban will be magically be lifted.

  • Depends on the Price.

At anywhere near retail, I wouldn't buy one.

I keep my flagship phones for 2 years or so (currently using a Samsung S9), generally giving it away when I upgrade so it wouldn't necessarily stop me buying a Huawei as resale means nothing to me. However if the price was near the Samsung equivalent, I'll choose the Samsung.

If you're still keen on the Huawei, I'd wait a couple of months to see what is going on.

  • I don't think that would be wise.

Buy with the 28Deg Mastercard price protection.

Then you get the phone, and protection about price drops for 12 months if the current situation isn't resolved.

    • Hey mate, I was trying to private message you but it said you don't accept messages. re: Panny TH-65EZ100U - anyway I can contact you?

      • Sure. Sent that TV back a while ago though.

I could advertise my 2007 VW Golf for $20k on eBay, doesn't mean it worth anywhere near that.

That's why you see the same cars on Carsales for 12 months because of the unrealistic asking price.
