Sennheiser HD820 $2,447 or HD800S $1,817 @ David Jones

160

I was interested in audiophile headphones. Just looked around David Jones and I noticed they had these on sale. It looked cheaper here than Addictedtoaudio and Minidisc.

For those that can buy e-giftcard, you can probably get 5-10% additional discounts.

Then you can do shopback for 8% discount right now.

The lowest price you can get it to will be around $2,006.

If you are planning to leave country within 60 days, well that's another 10% discount off from $2,447.

The lowest you can this probably around 2006.

Sorry but what does this sentence mean?

    • +4

I think he's saying that by combining discounted gift cards and Shopback you can get it for as low as $2006.

I think most audio geeks will say this is a pretty awesome deal, especially if you go the extra mile for the additional discounts.

The HD800S and HD820 are reviewed highly, and are not like other tech in the way that you need to upgrade every few years. IF you are capable (not everyone is) of hearing the small differences between high end headphones, then you will most likely buy one of these two and never buy another set of headphones again. You can hand these babies down to you kids and they will also have a top end experience.

I have had HD600's for around 15 years, and they still sound incredible.

Remember though, that with these headphones, they probably need an amp to drive them properly (a smartphone or laptop most likely won't provide enough power).

The HD700's are $700, which is also a really good price, if you aren't in the market for spending a couple of grand on headphones.

    • Would a DAP like the Fiio X7 MK2 be able to drive the HD800s?

      • +1

I am not sure. I would ask on headfi or r/headphoneadvice

        • thanks. Are the black parts aluminium or plastic?

    • IF you are capable (not everyone is) of hearing the small differences between high end headphones…

This is an important note. I bought a set of Sennheiser HD 598 headphones a year or two back, and my old ears couldn't hear any difference to the cheap set that I had meant to replace with them. While they aren't as high end as the HD820, it shows that some people just won't appreciate the difference in sound.

      • Oh my.

I don't doubt what you are claiming, but my 598s compared to my $50 headphones I got from the HN bargain bin sound night and day different.

Maybe you are not driving them with the amp needed to get the most out of your 598? If you just plug it into your smart phone it won't sound as lively.

        • Yes, I was quite shocked/disappointed.

To be fair, I was comparing against a gaming headset that cost more than $50, but the Sennheisers were being driven by my Yamaha amp, so I expected them to sound great. I know that sounds hard to believe, and it's certainly not the case for everyone, but sadly it was the case for me.

I've since picked up some Bose QC 35 II's and while my ears can't appreciate sound fidelity like an audiophile, I certainly appreciate the noise cancelling features on my daily bus commute.

    • I wonder if there's any difference between hd800 and hd800s worth changing for? Doubt DJs have an outlet to try them in. Headphones always sound completely different but it would be so close here.

Amps on the other hand, I've never heard a difference.

      • I did a bit of reading up in the prospects of purchasing the HD820 or the HD800S advertised here.

According to the critics who have the ears to hear these types of things the HD800 has an amazing soundscape that sounds very epic and all around you. Their was however a high mid range peak that to the critics allowed intricate detail in the sound but was agreed could become quite jarring after a while as it might be too much for usual listening(?).

There must of been enough feedback from critics and customers alike as Sennheiser then released the HD800S which toned down that high mid range peak to be a lot more pleasant for the majority of listeners.

If you google it you will get the above in more detail. I note there is a reversible mod on the HD800 you can do, plus some EQ changes to remove this said high mid peak.

        Hope this helps.

I agree with you in regards to Amps and DAC's. I grabbed the Schiit Magni and Modi Multibit and have never looked back. The guys who make them even said this is really all you will ever need, our more expensive equipment only adds a little more for a lot more money.

    • Sorry if I am necroing this post but I went down the rabbit hole of high-fi tier headphones after looking at this deal.

After two weeks of watching reviews, reading forum posts and comparison charts I have come to the conclusion that the Sennheiser HD 800 S are the top choice compared to the HD 820's and HD 800's. And even then they are not really the greatest choice, just more the most mainstream choice of the hi-fi tier range of headphones. You may want to look at swapping out the ear pads on the HD 800 S though as they are not as comfortable as other brands.

It is also worth noting that all the HD 800 series of headphones can be difficult to get sounding their best; you will need to look at the hardware you use to drive these.

In the end I came out of this rabbit hole purchasing the STAX L700's and the SRM-353X amplifier. Electrostatic headphones are in their own league compared to planar and dynamic and if you are looking for something that is regarded as 'end game' high-fi tier headphones for a lot cheaper than the Sennheiser 800 series which will literally crush them in sound, look at STAX L300's and their equivalent amplifier.

  • Couldn’t agree more , buy once and ignore the subpar headphone deals popping up ever so often. I’m very pleased with my setup

Thanks OP!! Just bought one. Awesome headphone for my MP3 music collection and Spotify streaming.

I see what you did here. Upvoted.

  • If you are planning to leave country within 3 months, well that's another 10% discount off from $2,447.

If this is a reference to GST refunds under the TRS, you must leave the country within 60 days of purchase.

    • This plus its $900 per adult traveller for trs. So this would need 3 adult travellers to cover it. Or you will be made to pay gst back upon return.

      • Just tell them you left it at your uncle's place overseas. And if they inspect you and find a pair, tell them this isn't the one you just bought, but one you bought years ago and never claimed TRS on…

If after high quality audiophile headphones, another worthy contender to consider are the Beyerdynamic T1 (Tesla) I have a pair and they are beautiful, at the time I bought them I worked at The HiFi Trader in Newton (Addicted to Audio now) and had the chance to do a side by side with HD800 and the T1's also the HD700 I much prefer the T1's but taste varies

    • Sorry was meant to say Newtown

  • Do david jones have these on demo? Ive never had the chance to try out a set, to hear how good they really are

    • I think best would be go to a local audio hifi store and try out different AMP/DAC with this headphone. This way, you know what flavor of sound signature.

      • Fair enough, but finding a hifi store that even has these out for demo would be the first problem

        • +1

Addicted to audio would likely have them. Store DJ doesn't (at least, not the one near me).

  • I currently have the Sennheiser HD8 DJ's which is their premium "DJ" headphones which sound fantastic and have really good bass clarity which I love.

Any audiophile's here who can tell me if there is a real improvement in sound if I was to upgrade to the HD800S? Would it be a night and day difference?
Price difference is huge with the HD8 DJ's $499.95 RRP compared to HD800's $2599.95 RRP.

I run my headphones through a Schiit Magni amp and Modi Multibit DAC.
