  • I haven’t been skiing or boarding before. Can some explain how it all works and what is actually free? Are lift passes compulsory? And I see ski hire is around $200 for 2 days. Thanks in advanced

    • Yes you need a lift pass, which is what is free. Otherwise you have to climb the mountain yourself with all your gear.
People who ski/board regularly might have all their gear already, but the title does need changing, as there are still costs for casuals to be able to ski

      • I mean, that's a bit of a naive perspective. It's like saying if Jetstar offered free flights but not free meals. Some people might buy meals and others might bring their own. But the flights are still a freebie…

A lift pass is required if you want to do downhill skiing. This is popular for punters as the ski lift does all the hard work getting up you up the hill. The lift tickets are the expensive part due to the infrastructure and staff required to run the operation. You can hire skis for the weekend for around $60 if you shop around. Lift tickets normally range from $100 - 150 per day during peak season and the size of the resort.

The other type of skiing is called cross country, this is sort of the equivalent of bush walking on snow. This is a generalisation though as there are many different disciplines within the cross country category. Generally speaking though there is no lift to get you up the hill. You use a different type of ski which allows you to move upwards.

  • Is therr enough snow to ski now?

      • Pity it isn’t a video.
That said, that is a fair bit of snow for May. Could be an awesome year to go.

        • There’s a live cam YouTube link on the desktop website

          • @dannyboi: Apologies. I mixed it up with the Perisher page!

  • Nice username OP.

    Ps. Great deal.

  • Can you drive up there in a 2wd

    • I believe you have to carry chain at all times to go to Selwyn.
I have been there twice and I wouldn't be suprised if there are snow on the road this weekend.

      • How's the resort compared to thredbo and perisher? I believe it's more for beginners and kids?

        • Def smaller than Thredbo or Perisher. I cant comment on the run as last time I was there was only for taking the kids toboganing

          • @st33p: Thanks. Do you have to hire their toboggans or can you bring like an Aldi sled for the kids?

            • +1

@CVonC: Last time you can bring your own, but you have to get a pass. This makes it just slightly cheaper than renting from them, but I don't know the rule now, sorry

All green runs*. Basically a big bowl of beginner slopes. Limited facilities compared with Perisher over the hill.
On the plus side it is quiet and not as flashy.

*edit: apparently not all beginner runs. http://www.selwynsnow.com.au/trailmap
I have only skied the front slope there, mostly stick to Perisher and blue cow.

You would be nuts to go up there without chains in a 2 WD in winter. Nothing sadder than a slow, graceful slide into oncoming traffic. The cops would also fine you.

  • thanks mod for updating the title/description.

  • It says the chair lift is open but the run is closed…Anyone know if this means there isn't enough snow to ski/board on? Their promo clearly states bring your skis and board.

I don't think they've updated the website properly. The New Chum lift/run is open.

Also, check the live snow cams (link above).

  • Any idea of what the lift lines will be like?

    • Previously there was only 1 chair lift and several T-bars. The chairlift always has long queues as its the lift closest to their buildings + lessons. On fine weather weekends the T-bars servicing the beginner green runs is very long. The T-bars servicing the black runs can be virtually empty as most of the skiiers and boarders are first timer newbies.

      • I thought it was all green runs? But then last time I skied there it only had t-bars.

Anyway I don think I have ever been there when it was very crowded, but I guess I am comparing it with Perisher, and I try to go mid week anyway.

  • Can we bring our own ski or hiring their ski compulsory?

    • You can always bring your own skis etc.

Selwyn is a bit of a niche resort - great for families who have an experienced skier and want a safe /small ski field for their kids.

  • Here's a question, say you hire their equipment for 3 days, do you just return it at the end of the 3rd day? I wouldn't imagine that you have to pick up and return every day. I ask because, thinking of going there first, hire some equipment (cheaper than Thredbo/Perisher), get a snowboard lesson done, then go to Thredbo and Perisher on day 2 and 3. I know there's BP Ski Hire in Jindabyne that's cheaper all up but it's out of the way if we're going to Selwyn first.

  • We are here lol. The length of the ski run is so short! Wouldn't of came if we knew.

    • Even the non-beginner runs on the map?

      • trying to find out by giving them a call on 64549000 but the line is busy, tried more than 10 times and no luck :p
i would like to know abuot this as well!

Only 1 chair lift is in operation. Length of run is 30-60 seconds. Also it broke down and they opened the t-bar next to it temporarily, same run.

We walked up the other hill to ski down. Whole place isn't big tbh.
